The “Student Chapter of Economic Geology of UFBA” has been formed by undergraduate
and graduate students of the Geology course at the Federal University of Bahia. The group
is headquartered in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and it is in operation since August 2011, when
it has been declared officially as “Student Chapter of Economic Geology”.
A summary of the main activities undertaken by the group is given bellow:
1. Regular meetings, lectures
The group has been holding fortnightly meetings, where has been discussing the planning and the division of tasks for each member. Everything has been recorded in the minute’s book; this is the responsibility of the secretary. Eventually we invite students who were working in some exploration companies as a trainee for share some experience and bring some knowledge about regional geology and deposit model.

2. Field Trips
Unfortunately this year was not possible to accomplish the field trip planed. In the
present year Brazil is undergoing an economic and political crisis, which has led to
a budget cut of 30% by the Federal Government for UFBA, making impossible to
obtain resources such as transportation, field material and lodging allowance.
Allied to it, the Professors, Public Servers and Student decided to hold a strike,
which has just ended and lasted 5 months.
For all that, we have decided to hold back the project and wait for a more
opportune moment.
3. Stewart R. Wallace Fund
The funding acquired has still not been used. As told before, we were planning to use
the money for the Field Trip. The Student Chapter is still studying the best way to use
the fund. Further information regard it will be sent soon.
4. Organization of conferences, workshops, short courses.
For this year, the group organized three events. Two conferences and one workshop.
Find more details below:
Geology week Organization
The Geology week occurred from May 25th to 29th, 2015 in the Institute of Geosciences
- UFBA, Salvador - Bahia in partnership with Academic Center (Figure 1). The chapter
members João Gabriel and Michelli Santos were invited to spoke about The Student
Chapter for the freshmans and the general public.
I Week of Metalogenesis / Geological Friday
The project formerly named Week of Metalogenesis, has changed to Geological Friday
and is being organized along with the Metalogenesis group of UFBA and with our
sponsor Aroldo Misi. The objective of the project is to invite an exploration geologist
from different deposits of Bahia for a lecture about the genesis of the ore deposit, and
after, open the theme for discussion. We decided it would be more interesting to have
one lecture for week instead of a week of lectures, to reach the most students possible
from the University.
Weekly tematic presentations.
This was the main project of the year, the idea is to encourage the members to study
one type of ore deposit and present a lecture about it to the students of Geology from
UFBA (Photos 1 and 2). The theme was selected according to the knowledge of which

member, so that they could all have the best performance possible. It was a huge
success. This project is still in progress.

5. Participation in conferences, workshops, short courses.
The Student Chapter of UFBA was present at:
SNET – National Symposium of Tectonic Studies
This symposium occurred from May 18th to 21st in Vitória, Espírito Santo. The SNET
occurs in a National and International level as an important forum of discussion about
new concepts and discoveries in the areas of Structure and Tectonic Geology, Basins
Evolution, as well as, techniques of structural analysis and theoretical and
experimental tectonic modeling. The SNET also opens discussion in the importance and

influence of tectonics in structure control of ore deposits. During this event, our
Chapter President, Michelli Santos, presented her Master's theme (Picture 2).
XXVI Northeast Geology Symposium
This Symposium brings together professionals from different areas of Geology to discuss
and present results of their researches and the developing of regional themes in a
national relevance, besides discussions and actions regarding the approach of the
academy with society. The theme of the Symposium this year was Geology and
Developing. During this event, our Chapter Vice-President Tiago Vasconcelos presented
about the mineralization in apatite in Maracás, Bahia (Picture 3).

6. Other programs
The Student Chapter of UFBA is working alongside with the University Professor of
Economic Geology in order to prepare a Metallogenesis Showcase to be displayed
in the Geosciences Institute of UFBA. This showcase will be used to exhibit ore
samples and their respective host rocks of the main deposits visited by the Student
Chapter Members. We already have 15 samples of different ore deposits. The
showcase inauguration was predicted to October, 2014, but it had to be postponed
due to the Economic Crisis already explained in this report. The showcase is around
60% concluded as shown in Picture 4.
