Local Students Receive K-State Scholarships Colby Helget, Derek Fike, Jordan Frank, and Mindy Hodges, seniors at Rock Creek Junior/Senior High School, were awarded the Kansas State University’s Leadership Scholarship during ceremonies January 28 at Kansas State University. Pat Bosco, Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Dean of Student Life presented the award. During K‐State’s annual Scholarship Day, students and their parents were guests of the university at a banquet. Throughout the day, they attended meetings with academic deans and student life officials.
Read Across America Read Across America was held March 6, 2008, for the junior high students. Our speaker, LouAnn Thomas, is an author. Her book is called Stories from Life in Progress. She writes columns in the “Topeka Capitol-Journal,” “Northern Life,” “Kansas Magazine,” and “American Profile.” This is the eighth year we have celebrated Read Across America at Rock Creek. Reading is so important to student achievement. It can be exciting for all ages. Schools and communities across the nation celebrate Read Across America. The event is held in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

StuCo Fun in February The first FUN event that StuCo held this month was the Winter Royalty Celebration. Derek Fike was crowned King and Taylor Blackwood was crowned Queen. A semi‐formal dance followed the game. A FUNd raiser for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society was held on Parents Night. Students collected donations from generous spectators who tossed their money into pillowcases or a blanket. Finishing this month of FUN, classes competed in the annual High School Class Olympics. Students represented their classes in a tug‐of‐war and a relay. The sophomore class won the most points in these contests. A noisy, messy Pie‐Eating contest was the finale of the assembly. Winning the contest by a “nose” was freshman, Nelson Kawano, who was so pumped for the contest, he dove into his pie resulting in a nosebleed. Fortunately, his pie was cherry!

FCCLA News
Junior High FCCLA members have completed making 22 books for the PAT parents. The books have zip‐lock pages to hold pictures of animals, numbers, or any printed item that a parent would like to insert to assist their pre‐school age child with identification. Tyler Buss and Lane Frazier presented the project at the District “D” STAR Events at Manhattan High on February 15 and received a bronze rating. Tori Plummer competed in the FCCLA Creed event and received a bronze rating. Keri Briggs, Kynedee Hodges, and Crystal Chitwood participated in STAR Events as timers, door keeps, and runners. Anna Jilka was nominated as the District “D” FCCLA Junior High Officer on February 13 and will be installed in her office at the state FCCLA Leadership Showcase in Wichita on April 4.
Senior High FCCLA members are busy sponsoring the Get Up, Get Active exercise program during the afternoon advisor. Students participating will receive a free exercise video after attending their tenth session. Water is provided and pedometers will be given to those participating. Expenses are being paid for through a grant written from the Kansas Health Foundation. Chelsea Ebert, Chelsea Renner, and Morgan Umscheid presented the project at the District “D” STAR Events at Manhattan High on February 15 and received a 1st place gold, advancing them onto state competition. Morgan Eichman participated in the STAR Events in the Illustrated Talk competition and received 1st place gold on her presentation titled “Mobil Privatization,” discussing the isolation that is resulting from increased use of technology in social settings, i.e. iPods, hand held computer games, etc. Members will be competing at the state level on April 3. Monica Ebert participated in STAR Events as a student judge in the Chapter Showcase Manual competition along with adult judges Bonnie Bauerle (FACS student teacher) and LouAnn Fike. On January 19 there were 33 students and 3 adults who participated in the chapter‐sponsored ski trip to Weston, Missouri. It was a bitterly cold night, but everyone enjoyed themselves on the slopes.

Congratulations to junior Devin Nelson, who has been nominated to attend the 2008 Summer Law Enforcement Academy in Salina, Kansas. The week long program, which is jointly sponsored by the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas American Legion, and Kansas American Legion Auxiliary provides qualified students an opportunity to gain knowledge regarding the training and responsibilities of Law Enforcement Officers.
Congratulations also to Megan Jilka who was selected as a winner in the local Masonic State Essay Contest. She will now compete for state level scholarships ranging in value from $500‐$4,000.
Following spring break, grade 8‐11 students will begin enrolling for the 2008‐09 school term. Beginning with juniors, students will be provided an opportunity to view the 2008‐09 master class schedule and submit their grade level enrollment forms.
Students interested in learning more about the University of Kansas might want to attend the “Hawk Talk” reception at the Manhattan Public Library beginning at 6:30 p.m., March 25, 2008.
