From the East, we have Nissan’s take on the popular sector of thefamily sized ‘soft roaders’ - the X-Trail.
Launched back in 2001 with a choiceof 2.0i petrol and 2.2 turbo dieselengines (joined by a 2.5i petrol a yearlater) over 58,000 X-Trails have foundthemselves ferrying kids to and froschools across the UK and Ireland.
With the diesel engine having come-of-age in recent years, it’s probably noreal surprise to learn that 75% of all X-Trail sales are turbo diesels. All X-Trailsare 5 door SUV’s making them simplewhen it comes to identifying models.
On the whole the X-Trails are meant tobe reliable, although there are knowncommon problems with the turbochargers failing, intercoolers leakingand oil leaks to name a few.
This probably helps to explain theirappearance midway down the table inthis years JD Powers customersatisfaction survey, coming 4th= intheir class and 51st= overall.
The diesel engine, as well as having afew reliability issues, it wasn’tparticularly refined either and whenthe X-Trail was facelifted in 2007 it wasgiven an all-new diesel engine, asfound in the Qashqai.
Blue Print’s parts coverage of theNissan X-Trail is excellent, and includessome parts that you may have thoughtare main dealer only, such as air flowmeters and glow plug relays.

Where most American SUV’s haveoversized bodies and are powered bygargantuan, thirsty petrol engines, theCherokee is scaled down in size toappeal to the UK buyers tastes andcomes with a choice of foursensible(ish) engines: a pair of turbodiesels (2.5 & 2.8) and a pair of petrolunits (2.4i and 3.7 V6).
In a sector with many better Japaneseand European rivals (the Nissan X-Trailbeing just one of them) it was nevergoing to be a class leader. That said,with lots of equipment, capable off road
performance and a front end stylingthat bore a strong resemblance to theWillys Jeep of WWII fame, the 2002>08Cherokee became a distinctive andreasonably popular sight on UK and Irishroads with around 18,000 being sold.
As with most four wheel drive vehicles,brakes and clutch tend to wear fasterthan on passenger cars, along withsteering components and items such aswheel bearings. Not surprising reallywith a kerb weight tipping the wrongside of 2000kgs.
