Strengthened By The Bread Of Life Today we resume the "Bread of
Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes refer-ence to the Jews' ancestors who ate man-na in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the Biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells His listeners that He is bread for the life of the world. It is very im-portant that we not stop listening to Jesus after His promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
John 6:51
Holy Day Mass—Assumption of Mary As the Solemnity of The Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary approaches, I offer a beautiful reminder of Church teaching on the importance of the Holy Mass.
It is both a precept of the Church and Church law that Catholics must worship God on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation by participating in the Holy Mass. This follows from the fact that in the Mass it is Christ Himself who worships the Father, joining our worship to His.
In no other way is it possible to adequately give thanks (Eucharistia) to God for the blessings of crea-tion, redemption and our sanctification than by unit-ing our offerings to that of Jesus Christ Himself. Canon Law 1247
On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass; they are also to abstain from those labors and busi-ness concerns which impede the worship to be ren-
dered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord's Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body. Canon Law 1248 1. The precept of participating in the Mass is satis-fied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated any-where in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day. 2. If because of lack of a sacred minister or for other grave cause, participation in the celebration of the Eucharist is impossible, it is specially recommended that the faithful take part in the liturgy of the word if it is celebrated in the parish church or in another sa-cred place according to the prescriptions of the dioc-esan bishop, or engage in prayer for an appropriate amount of time personally or in a family or, as occa-sion offers, in groups of families.
Since a "grave cause" is needed to excuse one from this obligation, it would be a serious or mortal sin to willfully skip Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation, as the Church has always taught. Rea-sons such as the necessity to work to support one's family, child care, personal sickness or the care of the sick, necessary travel etc. would excuse a person on a particular occasion. Those who have continuing reason to be excused should consult their pastor and seek a dispensation of the obligation.
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary MASS Schedule at Sts. Peter & Paul Wednesday, August 15, 2018 8:00 a.m. 6:30 p.m. (Note there is no Vigil Mass on Tuesday.) Please mark your Calendars and join our Parish
Family for this Holy Day of Obligation Fr. Jerry "Every holy Mass, heard with devotion, produces
in our souls marvelous effects, abundant spiritual and material graces which we, ourselves, do not know. It is easier for the earth to exist without the sun than without the holy Sacrifice of the Mass."

New Students: Forms are now available at church entrances and in the Church Office and will also be available on registration tables. New students may register on-line at the church’s website.
No registrations for new students will be ac-cepted without the following documents: Par ish Census Form, Baptismal and First Communion cer-tificates, proof of prior religious training through a Catholic School or approved CCD program and reg-istration fee.
Returning Students: Pre-printed registration forms will be available at Registration or in the Church Office. Please update the forms and make corrections carefully before submitting them. Re-turning students lacking any of the above sacramen-tal records MUST present them when registering in order for the forms to be accepted!

Families experiencing financial difficulties who are unable to pay the registration fees are en-couraged to submit their registrations with a request to meet with either Father Jerry or CCD Director, Mrs. Mary Kittel, to discuss a waiver or reduction of fees.
CCD classes begin Sunday, August 19. NO registrations will be taken the first day of
classes. For new parents unfamiliar with our
program, classes begin with attendance by both students and family at the 8:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Following Mass, students proceed to the Religious Education Building (Parish Hall) for instruction in the faith. Students are provid-ed a 15-minute break for snacks. Instruction con-cludes at 11:15 a.m., at which time students are re-leased to parents through a carpool line which files past the front door of the Parish Hall.
On the first day of classes, a mandatory meeting for all CCD parents will be held in the Par ish Hall following the 8:30 a.m. Mass, when handbooks and other important information will be distributed. Your presence at this meeting is a requirement of our religious education program.

Kind, Compassionate And Forgiving The Letter to the Ephesians urges us to be mind-
ful that part of our life together in the Eucharist means being kind to one another, compassionate and forgiving, just as Christ has forgiven us. What can we do this week to show our kindness, compassion and forgiving attitude toward others in our family of faith? How can we be even better stewards of our faith community as, what St. Paul refers to as “Imitators of God?”
Anger’s Offspring As long as anger lives, she continues to be the

Treasures From Our Tradition Careful readers of the "Treasures" will have no-
ticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the coloni-al states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding pat-terns of family and domestic life.
At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother su-perior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Missis-sippi Valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States.
Rev. James Field
St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe August 14 Maximilian was born in 1894 in Po-
land and became a Franciscan. He con-tracted tuberculosis and, though he recov-ered, he remained frail all his life. Before his ordination as a priest, Maximilian founded the Immaculata Movement de-voted to Our Lady. After receiving a doctorate in theology, he spread the Movement through a maga-zine entitled “The Knight of the Immaculata” and helped form a community of 800 men, the largest in the world.
On July 31, 1941, in reprisal for one prisoner’s escape, ten men were chosen to die. Father Kolbe offered himself in place of a young husband and fa-ther. He was the last to die, enduring two weeks of starvation, thirst and neglect. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1981.
Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin August 15
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined as a truth revealed by God that the Immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever Virgin, when the course of her life on Earth was finished, was taken up body and soul into Heaven. Such is the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.
“It was surely fitting, it was becoming, that she should be taken up into Heaven and not lie in the grave till Christ’s second coming, who had passed a life of sanctity and of miracles such as hers…Who can conceive that God should so repay the debt, which He considered to owe to His Mother for the elements of His human Body, as to allow the flesh and blood from which it was taken to smolder in the grave? Or who can conceive that the virginal frame which never sinned, was to undergo the death of a sinner?…
“She died, then, because even our Lord and Sav-ior died. But though she died as well as others, she died not as others die; for, through the merits of her Son, by whom she was what she was by the grace of Christ which in her had anticipated sin, which had filled her with light, which had purified her flesh from all defilement, she had been saved from disease and malady, and all that weakens and decays the bodily frame” (Cardinal Newman).
Jesus and Mary both passed through the gate of death into Heaven. In her own way, Mary was cruci-fied with Jesus. She patiently stayed on Earth, after His Ascension, so long as God willed.
From her place in Heaven she still abides invisi-bly with us, ever our refuge, our comfort, our hope. Through the Communion of Saints, of which she is the Queen, we share in the joy and glory of her As-sumption, which the Entrance Song of the Mass of August 15 gives us the key.

Dr. Thatcher founded the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy in 1996. Their mission is to spread the mercy of God, primarily through prayer cenacles, promote the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and encourage recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick and dying and pro-life causes. The ministry received three Apostolic Blessings from St. Pope John Paul II, and EADM is now active in over 40 countries. Dr. Thatcher has written several books on Divine Mercy, and has co-hosted two series on Divine Mercy that airs on EWTN. The ministry promotes the notion that the Divine Mercy message is more than a devotion or message; rather, it is a "Way of Life.''
