Page 6: Structures, Strategies and Compositions Lesson 8:Adapting fast break Evaluating Fast break

Describe how you developed your fast break?

Completed fast break with 2 players (Point guard and centre). Centre rebounded the ball, played outlet pass to point guard who had cut wide. PG dribbled up the middle lane and passed to centre who had overlapped PG to fill the right lane. Centre dribbled into score with lay-up.

Added in a forward, now all three lanes were filled. Exact same start accept this time PG passed to the F who dribbled into score with a lay-up. To make our fast break less predictable we increased the options available to our PG. Gave him two more options: Option 2 Pass to centre, centre scores. Option 3, PG went alone to score

How did you increase the difficulty of the practice as your skill level improved?

We started with a passive defender who closed down the PG but never stole the ball. After scoring three successful baskets we made the defender active, this meant he could steal the ball and compete. As our performance improved we added an extra defender, giving us one active and one passive defender. Lastly to make the practice even more game like we made both defenders active. After developing our fast break through progressive practices we played a conditioned game that focused our play on the fast break.

How has your performance changed after improving your fast break?

Our fast break is now less predictable because we can score from all three lanes. This means the defence can no longer predict who the point guard will pass to. As a result of the practices we have undertaken our skill level has increased. This means we can no break up court at speed and score before the defence get back to set up.

Adapting fast break

Sometimes your attacking strategy will need to be adapted during a game.

Why might this be?

1.Opposition know / can predict what you are going to do2.One of your players is playing in the wrong positionCentre not tall/strong enough to win reboundPoint Guard not fast enough when dribbling up court

Q1. Explain how you adapted your strategy.

Q2. Why did this adaptation make your strategy more effective?

Evaluating improvements in fast breakNext period we will reassess our fast break to ensure our performance of the fast break has improved. Question

How would you suggest we evaluate / reassess our fast break….Solution

Competitive game – Opponents of similar ability – 10 minute gameVideo recorded game Watch video – complete observation scheduleObservation schedule – fast break analysis – broke fast break down into component partsCompare observation schedule to initial observation schedule – has performance improved
