• Information vs. Power

• Network Enclosure

Structured wiring is a means of transmitting information rather than power. This information is transmitted in the form of low-voltage electrical signals. Examples would be:

telephone services

cable services

Internet services

Once all of these services have come together in one enclosure, or service center, these services are distributed as “home runs” throughout the house. This allows an easy way to change service offerings in each room.

• Daisy ChainWith structured wiring, low voltage wiring utilize “home runs”. With home runs, wiring is routed from the network enclosure to each outlet, as shown below. This provides improved signal quality and flexibility for future changes.

Introduction to Structured Wiring

Typical low voltage wiring would be “daisy chained”. This means the connections go from one outlet to the next, as shown below. The result is a loss of signal quality and limitations for future changes to the system.

• Growing ParticipationParticipation by Electrical Contractors in this “Home Automation” market grew from 33% in 2004 to 62% in 2006. This trend would also signal a growing presence for electrical distributors to service these installers.

The “Home Automation” Market, which includes structured wiring and home control products as well as all associated labor, equipment and cable is expected to grow from $3 Billion in 2007 to $6 Billion in 2012.

The enclosure serves as a central hub for the distribution and management of the low voltage wiring for the home.

Network Enclosures

• Service Center

If more space is needed than the enclosure provides, there are two possible solutions: get a larger enclosure or expand to an additional enclosure. Siemens enclosures permit connection with a 2” coupling tube through the knockouts, as shown here:

• Expandable

• NE10The NE18 is 18” tall by 14” wide. It can be flush or surface mounted. This item includes the enclosure and cover.

• NE18

Siemens Enclosures are available in 3 sizes:

The NE36 is 36” tall by 14” wide. It can be flush or surface mounted. The cover for this enclosure must be ordered separately, item: NE36C.

Telephone

Cat5 Cable is typically associated with computer connections, however, it is also used for telephone connections in Structured Wiring applications.

• Cat5 Cable

Typical phone connections only require two wires. Because Cat5 cable includes 4 pair of wires, up to 4 different phone lines can be run over one Cat5 cable.

• 4 Phones, 1 Cable

Telephone

For the TM1X6, connections from phone company and to the outlets are made with 110 Punchdowns. This style of connection is an easy, mistake proof way to connect with long runs of Cat5 cable.

• 110 Punchdown

The Siemens TM1X6 provides service to 6 locations and up to 4 phone lines. Additionally, this module has an RJ31X jack for connection to security systems.

Telephone

For the TM1X12RJ45, connections from the outlets are made with RJ45 connectors. An RJ45 jack is used to terminate Cat5 cable for both data and telephone in structured wiring applications.

• RJ45 Connectors

The Siemens TM1X12RJ45 provides service to 12 locations and up to 4 phone lines. This module does not provide for connection to security systems.

Telephone

The Siemens TM8EXP provides service to 8 locations and up to 4 phone lines. This module also includes an RJ45 “In” port for use in expanding from another telephone module.

• TM8EXP

If a single telephone module is not sufficient to service all the desired phone connections, expansion is easy by using the “Out” port on the module and a Cat5 Jumper.

Data

Internet Internet ServiceService

The Siemens DM8PSWT is a switch that provides service to 8 locations.

• DM8PSWT

Switches are used to connect computers on the same network; however they do not provide Internet access. You can still share your Internet connection through one of the computers on your network, however, if the main computer crashes, all of the other computers will lose their Internet connection. An example is shown here:

• Switches

Data

The Siemens DM4PRTR is a router that provides service to 4 locations.

• DM4PRTR

A router allows you to create a home network. A router has the ability to separates networks, allowing you to share your internet connection without being dependent on one computer’s connection. A router also provides a built in firewall for your network. An example is shown here:

Data

The Siemens DM8PEXP is a module that allows you to terminate Cat5 cable from outlets and connect to service through the RJ45 jacks. Connections can be made to 8 locations.

• DM8PEXP

Having the RJ45 jacks allow “plug and play” capability with a router or switch. All that is needed is a patch cord such as the Siemens AJ24 to jump from the DM8PEXP to the service. An example is shown here:

• Quick Connections

Video

Video modules provide a homeowner with a way to distribute video signals from various sources throughout the home. Passive modules are the most basic, and most common way to accomplish this.

• Passive Video Modules

Passive Video modules support all signal types encountered in a structured wiring application:

-Antenna

-Cable

-Satellite

• Receptacle Knockout

Product Features

When components are used in the Structured Wiring enclosure that need power, an outlet must be installed. Some competitive products would force you to buy an expensive add on to your enclosure to accomplish this. But Siemens offers a convenient receptacle knockout, in which a standard Junction Box can be mounted with sheet metal screws.

The Siemens NE18 and NE36 enclosures include several innovative features, three of which we will review in this product features section.

• Pre-Set Mounting Tabs

Product Features

The NE18 and NE36 enclosures are a convenient 14” wide, which allows them to fit easily between studs spaced 16” on center. To attach the enclosure to the studs on these flush mount installations, Siemens offers slots pre-measured to the wallboard thickness, to attach the mounting tabs. This facilitates quick, precise mounting of the enclosure.

1. Select proper slot 2. Insert Mounting Tab 3. Attach to Stud

• Flex Tabs

Product Features

Another mounting alternative for flush mount applications is to use the innovative flex tabs. These tabs allow the enclosure to be screwed directly into the stud (no additional mounting brackets needed) without distorting the enclosure. This is made possible because the tabs flex to allow the screw to tighten up to the stud.

All Siemens enclosures provide mounting holes along the back panel to allow attachment of any of the modules at any location. An example is shown here installing a video module in an 18” enclosure:

Product Features

• Modular Design

All Siemens enclosures and modules integrate a versatile, easy to use system for meeting our customer’s structured wiring needs.

Some manufacturers require special brackets or base plates be purchased along with their modules to connect them to their enclosures. All Siemens modules can be directly mounted on the enclosures.

• Stand Alone Modules

Product Features

• Push Button LockTo install the modules, attach the top hooks to the grid, then pivot the bottom of the module into position on the grid. Finally, press the push button to lock the module into place, as shown here:

• Upside DownBecause the modules are secured to the grid at the top and bottom, they can be oriented right-side up, or up-side down. Orientation inside the enclosure may change if incoming cables feed from the top or bottom. Reversing the modules can help to minimize bending of the cables and maximize space inside the enclosure.
