Parts that are easy to find• All 2nd generation 987.2 Boxster and Cayman parts are easily obtained from your local factory-approved dealer, independent Porsche parts supplier or eBay.

Parts that are hard to find • No shortages of 2nd generation 987.2 Boxster or Cayman parts have been reported.• Certain N-rated tyre sizes and brands can be hard to find in some countries. Sometimes, importing from America via Tire rack (www.tirerack.com) is an owner’s only choice. It’s often cheaper as well.

Parts that are very expensive• Litronic headlight system.• Optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) discs (rotors) and pads.• Fabric for 987.2 Boxster models’ rag top roof.

Hopefully, a spare seven-speed Porsche

Doppelkupplung transmission won’t

be needed, unless it’s a restoration project. (Author’s collection)

is that it draws cooling air into the radiator core(s): this means it also acts as a powerful vacuum cleaner, sucking up anything it can from the road surface. Ensure the radiators have been cleaned of all debris. Organic materials decay (rot) and can cause all kinds of corrosion issues.

Check the condition of the rear lights lens assemblies.

Check all seals: doors, hatchback (tailgate) (Cayman only), around all glass, and all related to the movable roof system fitted to the Boxster model range.

Ensure the seller extends the rear spoiler (wing) fully, and inspect for any evidence of damage, rubbing and corrosion. Once completed, ask the seller to retract the rear spoiler (wing) to its full down position, whilst you watch to see that everything runs smoothly. This is not applicable to the Boxster Spyder, which has a fixed rear spoiler (wing).

Whilst inspecting the exterior, inspect the brake discs (rotors), callipers and pads. Pad thickness must be greater than 2mm (0.08in) and the discs (rotors) must not be damaged. Check for evidence of brake fluid leakage over any components in the wheel wells, including the rear of each wheel.

Check condition of suspension in the wheel wells. It’s critically important that the seller open and

close the Boxster’s roof, so you can see it in operation. Don’t forget to ask about any repairs to the roof system since delivery. Properly inspect the fabric, as it’s very expensive to replace. Ensure the stowage cover also opens and closes smoothly. Check sealing, water drains and condition of the roof’s glass rear window (Boxster), as well as condition and alignment of the frame with the roof open and closed. There is an optional hard top available for the Boxster model range. If the sale includes the hard top, inspect its colour and condition, and check that all fittings are in good condition.

When carrying out an exterior inspection, always check the ground around the car for any evidence of fluid leaks, oil, coolant, transmission oil and water.

InteriorInspect all interior fittings and assemblies, including a full inspection of each seat for condition, ensuring none of the main or trim materials are cracked, torn, faded

LightsCheck the condition and operation of all installed lighting systems, front and rear, including headlights, rear lights, indicators (blinkers) front, rear and side, brake, reverse and foglights. Rating is for overall condition and correct operation.

WipersBoxster: Check condition and operation of the front wiper arm assemblies, including the wiper blades. Cayman: Check condition and operation of front

and rear window wiper arms and wiper blades. Rating is for condition and operation (don’t forget to wet the glass first).

WashersCheck condition of the windscreen (windshield) and headlight (if installed) washer nozzles, and operate the system. Rating is for washer nozzle condition and operation.

Roadster rag top and hardtopAll 987.2 Boxster models are of the roadster body style and delivered, as standard, with an electric-powered rag top roof. A thorough inspection and functional check of the entire rag top system is highly recommended. All Boxster models are fitted with glass rear windows: these are difficult to repair. All roadster roof systems creak, groan and

That’s got to hurt, but it looks like a promising Cayman project from this

angle … (Author’s collection)

… sadly, though, it doesn’t look like a restorable Cayman from this side.

(Author’s collection)

A potential Boxster restoration project? (Author’s collection)

From another angle, it still looks promising. (Author’s collection)

This Boxster Spyder might seem restorable, but it will be expensive, and not very cost-effective, because of the

resale price of roadworthy examples on the market … (Author’s collection)

… although, being a Boxster Spyder, its rarity might make it viable one day.
