knowledgeandexperienceaccumulatedoverthatfirsttenyears,weappliednewlydeveloped

technologiessuchas3-Dmodeling,ultra-precisionmachining,andprecisioncontrolled

seasoningtocreatetheYVN200G/SandYVN100G/S.Whileweweremakinggreatstrides

inourpursuittoreproducelegendaryinstrumentswewerenotyetfullysatisfied.Wehad

setouttocreateanidealviolinthatwouldbemoreaccessibletoall,butachievingthisgoal

wouldrequiremoretime.

ThebreakthroughcamewithourdevelopmentofA.R.E.(AcousticResonance

Enhancement)technology.A.R.E.changesthecharacteristicsofthewood,acceleratingits

maturingprocesssothataninstrumentcraftedfromA.R.E.treatedwoodssoundsandplays

whennew,asifithasbeenplayedforyears.What’smoreistheinstrumentcontinuesto

maturenaturallyasitages.Takingfulladvantageofthisadvancement,wewentbackand

redesigned,focusingontheinstrument’sshapeandthickness.Wealsodevelopedanew

antiquefinishtobringoutthebestinitsbeautyandtone.Thefruitsofourlaborcanbe

witnessedinourflagshipYVN500S—aninstrumentbornoutofthedesiretorecreatea

historicinstrument,andaninstrumentthatbringsanentirelynewrangeofpossibilitiesto

modernviolinmaking.

The Finish Therangeofeffectthatvarnishhasonaninstrument’stonalqualitywasdemonstratedwiththeYVN200G/SandYVN100G/S.Advancingourknowledgeandknow-howinfinishesfurther,weformulatedaspecialantiquevarnishthatgivestheinstrumentavintageappearanceworthyofitsmaturetone.Inordertocreatethisfinish,wecarefullyanalyzedtheconditionofanumberofexistingvintageviolinsofdifferentagesandindifferentcountriestobetterunderstandthetexturalcharacteristicsthatthesevintageinstrumentspossess.Werefinedthecraftsman’stechniqueandthetexturearoundtheedgesoftheinstrumenttodevelopanoriginalmethod.Thefinishistheproductofsixyearsofworkthatinvolvedresearchintopeelingthevarnish,creatingthegradients,perfectingeachprocess,andfindingtheoptimumbalancebetweeneachoftheseaspects.Throughourefforts,wehavefoundhowtogivefinemodernviolinstheclassiclookandbeautyfoundinfineantiqueinstruments.*3

The Woods Whatqualitiesdovintageviolinspossessthatmakesthemprojectsowellandplaysoexpressively?Thisquestionhaschallengedluthiersforcenturies.Takingonthisissue,wefocusedononepointinparticular,thatbeingtheagingofthematerials,andwiththisinmindwelaunchedanewprojectinthelate1990’s.Theanswercamein2001whenwefoundhowtogivethewoodsoverashortperiodoftime,thesamecharacteristicchangesthathaveoccurredinwoodsofantiqueinstruments.Utilizingthepowerofsteamwecouldpromotethecrystallizationofcelluloseandthebreakdownofhemicelluloseinthewoods*1.ThroughthisfindingwedevelopedourA.R.E.*2technology.Beforebringingittoourviolins,thistechnologywasfirstappliedtoseveralguitarmodelsandonacousticbuildingmaterialsusedinconcerthallconstructionwereithasbeenproveneffectandhasreceivedgreatacclaimfromaroundtheglobe.InapplyingA.R.E.toviolinswecouldaccomplishwhatwasnotpossiblewiththeYVN200G/SandYVN100G/Sandcreateaninstrumentthatdeliverswide-rangingmusicalexpressionwithexcellentprojection.*1 Japan patent number 3562517 / Europe EP1291143*2 A.R.E. is a trademark of Yamaha
