Page 1: STRENGTHENING THE COASTAL COMMUNITY

East Shore Park, New Haven

An 82-acre public space on the eastern side of New Haven Harbor, East Shore Park has seen the impact of severe weather events resulting in significant erosion and impaired coastal ecosystems. Save the Sound and project partners have been monitoring this site for several years and are in the design and funding phase of a 3,200-foot living shoreline project.

The living shoreline project will:Reclaim and reconnect more than a half-mile of shoreline for public access.

Provide natural erosion control.

Improve habitats for NOAA resources.

Protect public space and surrounding urban community.

Yield environmentally compatible, socio-economic benefits.

Long Island Sound is a unique, highly productive ecosystem with a wide array of habitats. To sustain and preserve the Sound, we need significant action to halt its destruction.

Save the Sound’s Green Projects Team contributes to this vital effort by restoring degraded habitats that provide critical ecosystem functions, making rivers and coastline accessible to people and aquatic life, and reducing pollution by creating greener, more resilient cities.

Green Projects at Save the Sound

Project Overview Goals and CIRCA Priority Areas

Improve understanding of the changing climate system and its local impacts on coastal floodplain communities.

Deploy natural science, engineering, legal, financial, and policy best practices for climate resilience.

Improve and foster resilient actions and sustainable communities.

Benefits to Resiliency

STRENGTHENING THE COASTAL COMMUNITY

Project Partners and Participation

Restore fish and wildlife habitat Dissipate wave energy Stabilize shorelineIn partnership with CT Seagrant, there will be an opportunity for community participation in the design phase and participation in the monitoring phase following implementation.
