Growing Volunteeer Knowledge Online, Trees For Life

“We are extremely grateful for your support of the implementation of

our Growing Volunteer knowledge online project”

Trees For Life is a unique organisation created by a community of people wanting to intervene in the degradation of the South Australian landscape through targeted revegetation and conservation work.

The small but vital contribution the John T Reid Charitable Trusts has given to Trees For Life has enabled the changeover from an extremely limited and unsupported database system to a highly sophisticated organisational software system called IMIS. Among many features, IMIS enables Trees For Life to take advantage of social media for promotional purposes, as well as interact more effectively with their valued members and volunteers.

Coranderrk Species Restoration at Healesville Sanctuary, Zoos Victoria

The Coranderrk Bushland Reserve is a significant remnant of Yarra Valley vegetation and contains diverse floral and faunal communities.

Zoos Victoria has identified the Coranderrk as a potential release site for some of our native species that are at the highest risk of becoming extinct in the wild.

The Reserve will be used as a safe haven for releasing a few captive-bred species, which will help prepare these animals for release to other wild sites by allowing them to be free-ranging.

The Trustees continue to be interested in the evolution of the Coranderrk Bushland Reserve project, which has been assisted by the medium sized grant from the John T Reid Charitable Trusts.

Executive ReportIt is always rewarding to reflect on the grants that have been awarded over the past 12 months, and know that the generosity of the Founder is still providing a wonderful legacy to communities throughout Australia. We are proud of the fact that we receive a written report on all the grants that we approve, and these reports are assessed to ensure our funds are being used for the purpose outlined in the original submission. We see this as a vital part of philanthropic giving, and we believe it enables us to build a stronger relationship with the organisations that we fund as we gain a greater understanding of the work they do.

The administrative operations of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts have benefitted greatly this year as our Office Manager, Jessica Reid, has taken an increasingly hands-on role in the development and publication of our quarterly newsletters and Giving Reports. Jessica has also refreshed the look of our website and ensures the smooth running of our office. Her passion for the role shines through in the work that she does and I would like to thank Jessica for her support over the year. We have also employed the services of a part-time administrative assistant to input historical grant details into our database. We look forward to being able to use this data for analysis in the future.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to attend several roundtable discussions this year with staff of other Trusts and Foundations in Victoria. It is always interesting to share our experience in funding within certain sectors and I look forward to maintaining these contacts over the coming year.

I would like to thank the dedicated group of Trustees who work so closely with the staff of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts throughout the granting process. We value the Trustees’ involvement, which includes the assessment of enquiry forms, the championing of projects, and the assessment of reporting throughout the life of an active grant.

Debbie Ashbolt Executive Officer

Chairman’s ReportEvery year brings new challenges for all of us committed to philanthropic support throughout Australia. Our experience in funding for 60 years has taught us to be generous and to trust the organisations that we support. In many cases start-up funding for new initiatives leads to great changes that affect the framework of community support in Australia.

There are many areas of need that particularly concern the Trustees of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts. Although the spread of requests through unsolicited applications for funding from throughout Australia covers a broad range of community concerns, there are often times when the Trustees seek to strengthen partnerships with organisations that are leaders in their fields of endeavour to enable research, development and innovative change.

This approach allows us to confidently allocate large grants over extended time horizons. This year we have acknowledged our relationships with the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal with grants to enable strategic change in process and policy. This granting recognises the motivations of organisations to make systemic change for the future of Australia.

In July we celebrated the launch of DisabilityCare Australia. This follows many years of philanthropic support for organisations advocating for a national disability insurance scheme. The Trustees are proud to have supported Young People in Nursing Homes to present a consistent case to governments for life-long support for people with disabilities. We congratulate all those who worked so hard to ensure this vital legislation.

Looking back on the past year, I feel very proud of the efforts of the Trustees and staff to ensure good funding. Day-to-day the uplifting reports and the spontaneous gratitude of recipients give us great joy. It is remarkably satisfying, fulfilling work. We know the legacy of Sir John Reid makes a difference 60 years after he began his quiet generosity. We aim to continue that generosity with respect and trust – inspired by the passion of those who champion change in Australian society.

HIGHLIGHTS Please visit our website at www.johntreidtrusts.com.au for further information about each of the projects that we highlight this year.

YOUTH PROGRAMSYouth Community Activities, headspace Warwick

headspace Warwick is a regional Queensland youth health service for 12-25 year olds, providing assistance in the areas of mental health, physical health, drug and alcohol issues, and vocational and social support.

The Trustees were delighted to support the work of headspace Warwick, particularly to encourage young people to access positive help-seeking behaviours and to encourage them to participate in physical activities.

The Trusts’ small but vital grant has gone a long way already. Activities have included basketball workshops, a program entailing Pilates, Beach Volleyball, Indoor Rock Climbing, Indoor Hockey, a Gym session, and Water Polo.

Several more projects are being developed, including gardening and landscaping.

Mentoring Program, Kids Under Cover

The mentoring program works with the scholarship program to support young people in Kids Under Cover homes who have the desire and ability to go on to further education and job training, but don’t have the resources.

The mentoring aspect aims to enrich the life of a disadvantaged young person by providing regular one-on-one contact with a trained adult mentor.

Through this larger grant, the program has focussed on mentoring the young people who are supported by Kids Under Cover. As a result, 12 young people have jumped on board in the first year and interest in mentoring continues to be extremely positive. There have been several fun filled days including matching events at the Melbourne Zoo and Wonderland Fun Park.

GROWING OLDERFalls Prevention and Wellbeing, Eastern Health

The Trustees of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts were excited to hear that the volunteers of the Falls Prevention and Wellbeing program at the Peter James Centre in Melbourne, were the recipients of the 2013 Minister for Health Volunteers award.

This is the first time that Eastern Health has won this award. The Falls Risk patients at the Centre are very proud of these volunteers and feel privileged to be receiving such wonderful preventative care.

Carolyn Schuwalow, Partnerships Manager with Eastern Health Foundation passed on the sincere gratitude of Eastern Health for the Trusts’ support.

“Due to the success of the pilot research project, the program is planned to be implemented across all Eastern Health sites, including Box Hill Hospital, Angliss Hospital, Maroondah Hospital and Wantirna Health by June 2014’.” Carolyn said.

The Trustees are pleased to see that a smaller grant can too have a far-reaching effect.

CALD Best Practice Counselling Project, Alzheimer’s Australia Vic

“As a result of your generosity we have been able to create stronger networks

and meaningful engagement with various community groups.”

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic is receiving significant funding from the John T Reid Charitable Trusts, for a three-year project to improve engagement with, and response to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community members living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.

The CALD Best Practice Counselling Project supports people living with dementia who find accessing services difficult due to language and cultural barriers.

There have been several successful events held recently, including information sessions to Polish seniors in Geelong, Doveton and St Kilda, to Maltese seniors in Reservoir, Parkville and Sunshine, and German seniors in St Albans and North Essendon.

COMMUNITY WELLNESSStrengthening Families, Independence Australia

“The Strengthening Families Program has been made possible thanks to the generosity

of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts.”

When people with a disability leave hospital and return home, those caring for them can face major practical and emotional issues. Yet there is very limited training and support available for those who care for a loved one or family member.

The Strengthening Families Program by Independence Australia will deliver free training to carers in metropolitan and regional areas. Carers will learn practical skills to enhance their care, such as manual handling, toileting and feeding.

At the same time they will receive additional support from Independence Australia’s Psychology and Counselling Services, with the aim of establishing local support groups for carers.

The Trustees are thrilled that this grant can assist those families who are impacted the most.

MediSim Program, CareFlight

The Volunteer Trauma Care Workshop is an integral part of CareFlights work, providing high quality, simulation-based trauma care training to rescue volunteers in regional and rural Australia.

Through a grant from the John T Reid Charitable Trusts, CareFlight was able to develop its MediSim program, which train volunteers in the area of trauma care. It covers eight basic areas, including safe extraction of trauma victim, haemorrhage control and airway management.

The workshops reached 67 participants in New South Wales, from Kempsey, Armidale, Narooma, Sussex Inlet and surrounding areas, with 32 hours of trauma care education.

Training includes simulated exercises where agencies work together to free a trapped patient suffering suspected airway occlusion.

Brisbane Common Ground Project, Mater Foundation

“The John T Reid Charitable Trusts has played a valuable role in supporting the Brisbane

Common Ground Project.“

Mater Foundation, in conjunction with Micah Projects, was awarded a National Homelessness Services Achievement Award in 2013.

The award recognised the tireless work made towards preventing and tackling homelessness through the joint Homeless to Home Healthcare program.

As part of the Homeless to Home Healthcare program, Mater nurses work within teams at Brisbane Homeless Service Centre and Brisbane Common Ground, as well as with an after-hours service to provide healthcare and support to those living rough.

During the first five months of operation, the after-hours service provided more than 1600 episodes of care to people as young as 14 and as old as 86 years.

The Trustees are delighted to support such a valuable service to under privileged people through a large grant from the John T Reid Charitable Trusts.

RESTORATION AND RENEWAL2013 Disaster Recovery, Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR)

In the 2012-13 summer, bushfires, cyclones and flooding devastated communities across many parts of Australia.

Through a very successful relationship with FRRR, the Trustees of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts are able to support these communities with small grants to various projects, which assist with recovery and restoration.

Through one of various projects funded through FRRR this year, the volunteer-based organisation ‘BlazeAid’ was able to purchase tools and equipment to support the severely impacted rural areas of Queensland.A young person with his mentor. Photo courtesy of
