Vaccine NewsThe United States Bishops have recently declared the Johnson & Johnson vaccine morally unacceptable to receive IF THERE ARE MORE AGREEABLE OPTIONS AVAILABLE. Moderna and Pfizer are two examples of more morally agreeable options because they do not use the cells of aborted babies in the production of the vaccine like J&J does, but only do so in the testing. Even the testing is something we should speak out against, but still may receive the vaccine, especially if in great danger. For more explanation and discussion on how the vaccines line up with the standards of Catholic Moral Teaching, visit https://lozierinstitute.org/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-covid-19-vaccine/.

My Dear Fellow Parishioners: Come bike with me in a book!During my bike ride across the U.S. from the Pacific to the Atlantic, many notes and pictures were taken. So many, in fact, that it was time to write a 231-page book, including colored pictures, covering this 52-day adventure! Please allow me to share this bicycling adventure with you! Starting on page 1 and mile 1, pretend you are the cyclist! Embark with me and the other cyclists on a 3,000 mile journey from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, riding over mountains, through the desert, 19 days across Texas, in the deep south of Bayou country, and finally to Florida! The book is called, “The Time of My Life” and you can obtain a copy delivered straight to your door by emailing me or paying via the Zelle app: [email protected] or by sending a check to Clarence Bechter, 4260 Wickliffe Drive, New Franklin, OH 44203. The cost is $16.69, $23.69 if shipped. It is a good read! I’ve even read it four times! Call or write with questions at 330-690-6235. Thank you! – Clarence
Divine Mercy Novena Pamphlet Pick-upThe Divine Mercy Novena pamphlet is available in English and Spanish. Pick up your copy from the tables in church.Begin praying the Novena on Good Friday. This will prepare us to celebrate the end of the Novena with a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration on April 11th at St. Bernard! This is
a wonderful way to grow close to Jesus and many have done so through the meditation and praying of this prayer!
"Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and Alleluia is our song."

EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 4, 2021
St Mary’s School NewsThis year has been filled with many challenges. With God’s help, the faculty and staff at St. Mary, Akron have lovingly provided a safe, challenging, and Catholic learning environment for the students of St. Mary Catholic School. With less than a Quarter of the school year left, we wish
to say “Thank You” for supporting the students at St. Mary. We do appreciate all you have given to our school and look forward to the possibility of welcoming visitors, tours, tutors and Club Facilitators into the building once again next year. Peace, Happy Spring and Happy Easter!!!
Coming Next Week! The special Easter Time edition of “The Memorare” featuring reflections on our Lenten Retreats, announcements of Jubilee Masses of our priests, meet the 10 new Catholics, see pictures from activities going on around the parishes and SO MANY MORE signs of life!
PASTOR’S NOTE
On the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large. On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. He said to them, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.’”
– Mark 16:2-7
I have noticed for the first time ever this Lent, through our Thursday evening Bible discussions and prayer (see facebook), the phrase “utterly amazed.” It pops up at all sorts of places in the Gospel of Mark. When it does, it seems that it is the thing that those without Christ are looking for in Mark’s Gospel that only the ways of Jesus are actually able to provide. In Greek, it is expressed always as some conjugation of the word, “ekstasei“ from which comes our English word “ecstasy.”
Like those in Scripture, we all still seek ecstasy, the thing that will lead us satisfyingly outside of ourselves and our own situation. Searching for this understanding is so relevant to re-emerging from COVID-19 kabashes that we all have endured this past year. This Christian notion of ecstasy is perhaps why we gather with friends, play video games, eat fine foods, watch movies, grow families and make contributions as we can to the betterment of those around us.
The opposite of such a thing, is simply “static;” unmoving; BORING! Static is almost always the way things are going in the Gospel of Mark before Jesus arrives on the scene. A genuine sign that we have died with Christ and are living risen with Him is that we have a life full of authentic ecstasy; activity and joy within AND outside of ourselves.
At the empty tomb for the first time in the Gospel, those following Jesus are NOT to be amazed. For the genuine disciple, regular amazement, ecstasy, is the norm. When being faithful to God and seeing God faithful to us, it is truly amazing!
Where do we look to be “utterly amazed?” What in our lives is in need of “utter amazement?” We may approach Jesus with hearts heavy as tomb boulders at this time. We may expect to see death and see not much but a dead, static situation. After approaching Jesus, however, be amazed anew and then never need to be amazed again that amazement is a part of normal life with Him! He does indeed, “go before us as he has promised!”
Happy Easter to you and yours! May prayer and faith lead you to amazing signs of life where once there was a space full of death. And may all the ways we yet feel dead and entombed be renewed ecstatically, amazingly and sufficiently by Jesus and His Paschal Mystery which we celebrate during this Easter Time!
