Streetscape & Urban Design

The development of high quality public places and built environment is becoming increasingly important to both the private and public sector in New Zealand. Urban design is about guiding, designing and supporting the delivery of this.

Streetscaping is a common means of improving public spaces. Gray Matter staff have been involved in many streetscape projects, both while at Gray Matter and while working for others.

We have significant experience in managing projects that use a range of specialist disciplines, taking a project from design concept through to implementation. Our engineering background gives us key skills in project scoping and budget control to help ensure that concepts become reality.

We offer a wide range of expertise in the following areas:

› Town concept planning including project identification, scoping and estimating

› Streetscape projects

› Infrastructure projects

› Review of development plans

› Design guidelines for integration with District Plans

› Preparation of consultation material and participation in public consultation

› Traffic engineering for upgrade projects and new developments that incorporates urban design principles and is sympathetic to all users

› Management of public projects such as public art supply and installation

Recent projects that have been completed by Gray Matter include:

› Heart of Te Awamutu – concept and project planning for an upgrade to the Te Awamutu Town Centre. The project investigation included urban design evaluation; concept design and estimating for streetscape upgrades; parking studies; and preliminary investigation of the scope and location for a cultural centre and community wellness centre. Over 20 projects were scoped and costed.

› Walk of Fame – design and construction management of the walk of fame that celebrates personalities from Te Awamutu.

› Shakespeare St and Leamington Village Upgrade – project management and construction supervision of this high profile streetscape and road rehabilitation project, working in collaboration with Opus.
