Solar Energizer Maintenance• Checktheenergizerregularlytoinsureoperationisnormal.• Cleanthesurfaceofthesolarpanelregularly.Useasoft,dampcloth.
Donotuseabrasivematerialsthatcouldscratchthepanel.• Setthetoggleswitchinthe“OFF”positionwhennotusingtheenergizerfor
morethan5days.Thispreventsoverchargingofthebattery.• DO NOT use any means for charging the internal battery except for the
solarpaneloraconstantpotentialcurrentlimited12VDCbatterycharger(PowerWizardPartNo.F-2)ratedat500milliampsmaximum.
• When storing the energizer, place the energizer in strong direct sunlightfor2daysevery3monthswith theswitch in the“CHARGE”position.Putswitchbackintothe“OFF”positionforstorage.

9. DONOTrunfencewireabovegroundnearhighvoltagepowerlines.Iftooclose,theelectricfencemaypickupdangerouslevelsofpowerfromhighvoltagelines.Nevercrossunderahighvoltagelinewithelectricfence.
10. ALWAYSmaintainanadequategroundsystemsecurelyattached to theenergizer.
11. DONOTalterthepolarityoftheenergizerplugon110Voperatedenergiz-ers.Forbatteryoperatedfenceenergizers,connecttheredbatteryclamptothepositivebatteryterminalandtheblackbatteryclamptothenegativebatteryterminalonly.
12. NEVERchargeabattery that isconnected toa fenceenergizer.Alwaysdisconnectthebatteryfromtheenergizerfirst.
13. WARNING!Electricfencesareveryeffectivepsychologicalbarrierswhenproperlyinstalledandwhenanimalsaretrainedtothefence.Electricfencesare NOT complete physical barriers. Erratic animal behavior cannot be

vegetation,buildingsandroofoverhangswillnotblocksunlightfromthepanel.
A. Afullychargedbatterywilloperatetheenergizerforupto18daysin darknessbeforetheenergizerwillstop.Atthispoint,thebatteryis
almostcompletelydischarged. B. Afullydischargedbatterywillrequire20-25hoursofrechargingwith
thesolarpanelinstrongsunlightbeforeoperatingtheenergizer. On average, 6-8 days of charging in sunlight will restore a fully
dischargedbattery.Rechargebatterywiththetoggleswitchin the“CHARGE”position.5. Uponcompletionofbatterycharging,theenergizerisreadytobeinstalled
onthefence.Locateenergizersothatsolarpanelisfacingduesouthintothesunatitshighestpointat12:00noon.Selectalocationwheresolarpanelwillneverbeshadedfromthesun.Locatetheenergizeroutofreachofanimalsandchildren.Securetheenergizersothatsolarpanelwillnotmoveawayfromthesun.
6. Connect fence and ground wire to labeled terminals and move toggleswitchto“ON”position.Redlightwillflashwhenenergizerisoperating.

Supplemental Instructions for Battery Powered Energizers
1. UseaDeepCycleRechargeableBatteryratedat60amphourorgreater.Marinebatteriesarerecommended.
2. Avoidplacingbatterydirectlyunderenergizersothatcorrosivegaseswillnotdamagetheenergizer.Locatethebatteryinacoolanddryareaforbestperformance.
3. Placethebatteryawayfromsparksandinawell-ventilatedareaforsafety.Checkbatteryvoltageandenergizerperformanceregularlytoensurecon-tinuousoperation.
Supplemental Instructions for Solar Charged Energizers
1. Removeall labelsfromfrontofsolarpanelandcleanpanelwithadampcloth.
2. Makesurethattheleadwirerunningfromthesolarpanelisconnectedtothefenceenergizer.
3. Puttoggleswitchinthe“CHARGE”position.4. IMPORTANT:BEFOREINSTALLINGENERGIZERONTHEFENCELINE,
mountenergizerupright ina locationoutdoorsthatwill receivethemaxi-mumavailabledirectsunlightforaminimumof4days.Facetheenergizerduesouth,intothesunlight.Energizershouldbeinalocationwheretrees,

predictedandoccasionalfencepenetrationcanoccur.Therefore,PowerWizardassumesnoliabilityforanimalcontainment,injuryortheconse-quencesforthemisuseoftheequipment.

HOW DOES THE ELECTRIC FENCE WORk?
Thefenceenergizerputsahighvoltagepulseofelectricenergyonthefencewireat1to2secondintervals.Inidealconditionstheenergizer,theelectricfenceand thegroundwire forman incompletecircuit.Whenananimalcomes intocontactwiththefencewhilestandingontheground,theelectriccircuitiscom-pleted.Electronsimmediatelyflowthroughtheanimal’sbodyfromfencewiretoground.Thisisexperiencedasashock.Theshockwillonlyberespectedandrepeltheanimalifthevoltageandenergyinthepulseareatadequatelevels.Voltageandenergylevelsinthepulsearedeterminedbythecapabilityofthefenceenergizer,theconditionofyourfenceandthequalityofthegroundsystem.Generally,aminimumof2,000voltsmustbemaintainedonthefencelinetorepelmostanimals.Manyanimals requireseveralshockexperiencesbeforetheyarefullyconditionedwithlastingrespectforthefence.

3. Pack product carefully in oversized carton with crushed newspaper forcushioning.
4. Yourproductshouldbeshippedprepaidandinsuredagainstshippinglossordamage.
5. Before returningproductunderwarranty,youmustcallPowerWizardat(800)866-2161toobtainaReturnGoodsAuthorizationnumberandaship-pingaddressfortheservicecenterthatwillprocessthereturn.TheRGAnumbermustaccompanythereturnedproduct.
kEYS TO SUCCESSFUL ENERGIzER INSTALLATION
Take care of the following details and you will prevent many hours of extra work.
1. Usethecorrectsizeenergizer.Itisbesttoselectanenergizerthatwilladequately power the most difficult fence conditions. This generallyoccursduringthepeakgrowingseason.RefertothePowerWizardEner-gizerSelectionGuideforproperenergizerselection.
2. Carefullyinstallacompletegroundsystem.Mostelectricfencefailuresarecausedbyanimpropergroundsystem(seeDiagram#1,pg.12).
3. Take time toproperlyconnect leadoutwire,groundwireand fence linesplices.This is thesecondmostcommoncauseofelectric fence failure.Useclamps,splitboltsandtapsforsecuringwireconnections.Makesureallconnectionsurfacesareofbare,shinymetal(seeWireSpliceandConnec-tionsDiagram,pg.22).
4. Useadequatelyinsulatedhook-upwire(ratedforatleast20,000V)wherethehotwiremusttravelunderground.Neverusestandardhouseholdinsulatedwire,whichistypicallyratedforonly600voltsorless.

INSTALLING THE GROUND SYSTEM
The”groundsystem”isaseriesofhighlyconductiverodsdrivenintothesoilandthenconnectedbywiretothegroundterminalofyourfenceenergizer.Thegroundsystemcollectselectronsfromthesoiltocompletethecircuitneededfordeliveringaneffectiveshock.
1. Locateanareaofsoilforplacinggroundrodsthatcontainsgoodconduc-tiveearth (notsandyor rocky).Soil that ismoist throughout theyear isbest.Thegroundsystemshouldbe locatedwithin75 feetofyour fenceenergizerandatleast25feetfrombuildings.
2. Locategroundsystemaminimumof75feetawayfrom:
a. Utilitycompany(electric,gas,water)groundsystem. b. Undergroundwaterpipe c. Metalwatertanks d. Metalsidingonbuilding(minimum25ft.away)

2. Beforeconnectingthe“fence”and“ground”energizerterminals,pluginor“poweron”theenergizerandchecktheoutputvoltageattheterminalswithanelectricfencevoltmeter(useonlyvoltmetersdesignedforthispurpose).Recordthevoltageasabenchmarkforfuturereference.Youshouldseetheindicatorlightflashingandheara“click”at1to2secondintervals.

3. VERIFY THAT YOUR GROUND SYSTEM IS WORkING
Thequalityofyourgroundsystem isvital tomaximizing theperformanceofyourfenceenergizer.Duringdryseasonsorduringseasonswhenthereisex-cessivegrowthorvegetationonthefenceline,itmaybenecessarytoupgradeyourgroundsystemwithextragroundrods.
Totestthequalityofyourgroundsystem:
1. Unplugyourfenceenergizer.
2. Place the fenceunderheavy loadby“shorting” the fenceas follows.Atalocationonthefenceatleast100yardsfromtheenergizer,lean3or4steelstakesorT-postsagainstthe“hot”wireofthefence.Alternatively,youmaypushseveralpiecesoffencewireintotheearthandwraptheoppositeendsaroundthehotwire.
3. Plug theenergizer inandcheck the fence linevoltagewithadigitalvoltmeter.Youwanttoseethatthevoltagehasdroppedbelow2,000Vdueto
shortingthefence.Continuetoshortthefencebyleaningsteelpostsorbymakingwireconnectionstogroundat100yardsdistanceormorefromenergizeruntilthefencelinevoltagedropsbelow2,000V.
4. Youarenowreadytotesttheenergizergroundsystem.Connectoneleadofthedigitalvoltmetertoa12inchmetalstakedrivenintotheground3feetawayfromthelastfenceenergizergroundrod.Connectthesecondleadtothegroundrodfurthestfromtheenergizer.Thevoltagereadingshouldideallybezeroornomorethan200V.
5. Ifthedigitalvoltmeterreadingisunder200V,yourgroundsystemisadequateandyouwillgetnearmaximumperformancefromyourelectricfenceenergizer.
6. Ifthereadingisabove200V,thenyourgroundsystemneedsimprovement.Youmust:
a. Addmoregroundrodsconnectedinseries,3feetapart.
