On March 8, the world tooktime out to celebrate Inter-

national Women's Day. But letus not stop there in recognizingthe significant contributions ofwomen worldwide. As the lateAmerican religious and politicalleader, Brigham Young, ob-served: “You educate a man; youeducate a man. You educate awoman; you educate a genera-tion.”

Women across the globecontinue to make great strides, and over the last few decadeshave been out-performing menat just about every level of oureducation spectrum. These gainsin education spans racial andethnic groups and is also evidentin just about every corner of theglobe, developed as well as un-developed.

However, women havebeen facing several other issues

as noted by the InternationalWomen's Day 2016 campaigntheme #PledgeForParity. Thiscall to take action is seeking thesupport of ordinary people tomake a pledge, financial andotherwise, to help accelerategender parity.

We should consider thepledge to help women and girlsachieve their ambitions, chal-lenge conscious and uncon-scious biases and discriminationagainst women, call for gender-balanced leadership, valuewomen’s and men's contribu-tions equally, and create inclu-sive and flexible cultures.

We need to support and em-power our women to contributemore to the social, economic, cultural and political advance-ment of our community.

Nonetheless, we have muchto celebrate on the achievement

of women. But we cannot becomfortable if we continue torecord a high level of poverty inhouseholds headed by a singlewoman and sit on our laurels as

progress towards gender parityslows in many places.

The celebration of“Women's Day” should not beseen as a mere personal senti-mental expression for people inrelationships, but a deliberateand structured effort to fix thesegermane problems affecting ourwomen.

“Women's Day” should notbe the exclusive preparative ofsome so-called men of “sub-stance” demonstrating or gettingexcited about their love and af-fection for women. At the sametime, women in general need tobe more genuine and proactivein support of other women.

As we reflect on the cele-bration of “Women's Day” 2016,we are urging everyone to bemore genuine and supportive ofwomen and not be cynical andhalf-hearted detractors.

Jamaica, on Thursday March 3,2016, celebrated the swearingin of Andrew Michael Holness asPrime Minister of the largest Eng-lish speaking Caribbean nation byGovernor General Sir PatrickAllen.

Prime Minister Holness is nostranger to the process becauseback in 2011 he was sworn in afterthen Prime Minister Bruce Goldenstepped down from the positionand he was elevated through partyselection to head a new JamaicaLabor Party government.

Prime Minister Holness tookcontrol of the government thistime around after defeating thePortia Simpson Miller lead Peo-ple’s National Party in generalelections held on February 25,2016 where his party secured 32of 63 seats. This in essence is theclosest result in any of Jamaica’sparliamentary elections since in-dependence. The result of thiselection will see Prime MinisterHolness traversing uncharteredwaters with this one seat majority.

Because of this razor thinmajority in parliament, it has setthe tongues and keyboards of po-litical pundits and analysts wag-ging and click clacking as they tryto make sense of how things willplay out over the next five years.

Amongst the early predic-tions of things to come is that Hol-ness could trigger off openwarfare again which could resultin members of his own teamcrossing the floor to join the oppo-sition. Just one such incidentcould result in the tipping of thescale towards the opposition, whowould automatically be asked toform a new government.

Mr. Holness has been placedin a “tight rope walking” positionbecause he has to find a balance tokeep his own team happy at alltimes while at the same timemaintain civil discourses with theopposition who could make hislife in parliament very miserable.

It is based on these scenariosthat it is believed Mr. Holnessmight be forced to seek a newmandate by going back to thepolls in the not too distant future. But those scenarios are but onlytwo of how things could play out.

The new Prime Minister hasinherited a house that was run ona very tight purse string by disci-plined fiscal managers which washeaded by Finance Minister Dr.Peter Phillips.

But he rode to victory on apromise of no income tax for peo-ple making up $J1.5M or $18,000on average for each person. Thismessage was deceptively deliv-ered causing many people withvery low income or even the un-employed believing they wouldreceive $18,000. This is the prom-ise that could lead to the downfallof Mr. Holness. How can he takeup to $30 billion from an alreadytight budget?

With the reduction of tax in-take and the IMF keeping a closewatch on how Jamaica managesits financial resources and is ex-pecting the country to come upwith $120 billion, up from $60 bil-lion in order to pass the next test, one wonders where will Mr. Hol-ness get the money after givingsuch a large tax break.

Just think, if you are on atight budget in running your houseand you decided to start givingaway up to 60% of your income toyour church, what do you thinkwould happen?

You will have to find ways ofgetting more money because yourmortgage lender is expecting yourmonthly payment, the childrenneed food, clothing, lunch moneyas well as telephone, light andwater bills are due.

In the case of the country Ja-maica, increased taxation is thequickest way. Based on this as-sumption, one can expect an in-crease in the General ConsumptionTax (GCT) to make up the short-fall. The question here then is, howhappy or understanding will con-sumers be after finding that theprice of everything has increased.

These are amongst the chal-lenges Mr. Holness will have toovercome in order to have a suc-cessful tenure as PM of Jamaica. With that in mind, all the opposi-tion People’s National Party (PNP)have to do is dust themselves offand be ready at all times for theeventuality of a snap election.

Jamaican ModelSues Donald Trump

Continued from page 1The lawsuit against trump’s agency,

which has drawn international attention, highlights his continued use of undocu-mented immigrant labor. Palmer’s case alsocomes as Trump is increasingly being ques-tioned by his political rivals about his treat-ment of women and immigrants, andspecifically, his frequent use of the guestworker visa known as H-1B.

The agency is reported to have taken 80percent of Palmer’s earnings as expenses andfees but only found her 21 shoots over threeyears. And under the terms of her visa, shecould not work anywhere else if she wantedto stay in the U.S.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s attorney,Alan Garten, disputed Palmer’s claim, claim-ing that she was treated the same as any otherfashion industry prospect and made littlemoney because “she had a lack of work.”

Trump Model Management lawyerLarry Rosen said Palmer’s case "hinges onwhether she was an employee, which she wasnot. She’s a model that engaged TrumpModel Management to be her model man-agement company.” Rosen continued to say,“That is customary in the industry. Modelsare not employees of their modeling agenciesbut rather get paid a percentage -- here, 80percent of whatever she earns as a model…We fully expect a decision reflecting that shewas not an employee of Trump Model Man-agement.”

R&B singer Chris Brown has alsoblasted the presidential hopeful in a rant viahis official Instagram page, labeling Trump’spractices as evil.

A20-year-old Brook-lyn man was sen-

tenced to 23 years to lifein prison for the murderof Gilbert Kelley, a 57-year-old homeless manwho was shot dead inClinton Hill last year fol-lowing a brief verbal dis-pute.

Victorious Kings-berry, 20, of Clinton Hill,Brooklyn was sentencedMonday (March 7) to 23 years to life in prisonby Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Fire-tog, following his conviction in November oncharges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon fol-lowing a jury trial.

According to trial testimony, on March15, 2014, at approximately 4 a.m., the defen-dant, who was 18 years old, and five of hisfriends were on the way home from a partywhen they exited the subway near Grand Av-enue in Clinton Hill. The group then turnedonto Grand Avenue and started to walk to-wards Lafayette Gardens, a few blocks away.

As they walked up Grand Avenue, ac-cording to trial testimony, they encounteredGilbert Kelley, 57, a local homeless man whooften swept the sidewalks of Grand Avenueand helped the homeowners on that block bydoing odd jobs such as carrying groceries, rak-ing leaves and shoveling snow.

Kelley was pushing his shopping cart atthe time and told the defendant and his friendsto be quiet because the neighbors were sleep-ing. The defendant and his friends then gotinto a dispute with Kelley and started to ap-proach the victim, who pulled out a kitchenknife. The defendant and his friends thencrossed to the opposite side of the street, andthe defendant then pulled out a .380 caliberhandgun and fired, striking the victim in thechest, and ran off.

Mayor Richard ThomasThomas envisions a bright futurefor the City

MOUNT VERNON:

It’s a new day in Mount Vernon, accord-ing to first-time Mayor Richard Thomas, who preached patience and confidence forthe future at his inaugural State of the Cityaddress.

On Thursday night at the RebeccaTurner Elementary School, Thomastouched on various problems that have re-cently plagued his city, including infra-structure issues, funding the school districtand “zombie housing” that has become acommon sight - and blight - in the city.

Barely three months into his first termat the helm of Mount Vernon following themuch-maligned reign of former MayorErnest Davis, Thomas implored a capacitycrowd to ignore the sins of the past andlook forward toward what he envisions asa bright future for the city.

“Issuing the ‘State of Our City’ is trou-blesome, because the problem we face did-n’t just happen overnight, nor will they befixed overnight,” he said. “Moving forwardmeans making the hard decisions to bringabout a new day in Mount Vernon.

Thomas spoke of a vision for MountVernon that included improved schools, in-creased collaboration between city stake-holders, and more transparency in officialcity actions.

“The ‘State of Our City’ is becominghopeful. It’s the same hope that has beenspreading to our families,” he said. “Weneed to have the same hope that the nextgeneration of Mount Vernon lives can bebetter than ours.

NY, NY:

Family members of Ramarley Graham arecalling on city officials to fire the NYPD

officer who killed the Bronx teen in 2012.They joined supporters for a rally outsideCity Hall.

It comes days after the U.S. Justice De-partment cited insufficient evidence as thereason behind its decision not to pursue thecase through a grand jury.

Graham was shot and killed by OfficerRichard Haste inside the bathroom of hisfamily's home. Police believed he had a gun,but no weapon was found.

Graham's mother, Constance Malcolm, says the other officers involved should be outof a job. "We can't have these people on theforce," she said. "I asked de Blasio for a meet-ing, and I still haven't gotten a response fromhim yet. So let me find out you're not goingto do your job, because I figure you're goingto be a one-term mayor."

Police Commissioner William Brattonsays a departmental trial against Haste willnow move forward and that the NYPD de-cided on its own to hold off on the internaltrial until U.S. attorney Preet Bharara finishedhis investigation.

Earlier this year, Bratton implied he wasasked to delay any discipline. "That doesn'tmake any difference. We do that as a matterof course, whether he requested it or not,"Bratton said. "We, as a matter of practice, sowe don't step their investigation by interview-

ing our personnel on an administrative matterthat then may impact on the more significantcriminal case."

Haste is on modified duty and remainsstripped of his gun and badge.

Constance Malcolm, the mother of Ramarley Graham, who was killed by NYPD Officer Richard Haste after officers bustedinto their home on February 2, 2012, calls for Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton to hold accountable the officersinvolved in the death of her son on the steps of City Hall on Thursday, Mar. 10, 2016.

Former Curacaoprime minister sentenced to threeyears in prisonfor corruption

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao:

Gerrit Schotte, former prime minister ofCuracao, has been found guilty of cor-

ruption and sentenced to three years in prison. The judge also ruled that Schotte cannot standfor election to public office for five years. Thepenalty corresponded to that sought by thePublic Prosecutor (OM).

Schotte’s life partner, Cicely van der Dijs(owner of the gas stations VanDis) was alsofound guilty. She was sentenced to 18 monthsin prison, of which nine is conditional. Thismeans that she will only stay in prison for ninemonths.

Schotte was accused of several other of-fences including money laundering and for-gery. The judge said that he abused hisposition as prime minister.

According to the OM, Schotte receivedfunds from the Italian mafia linked St Maartencasino boss, Francesco Corallo, to establishhis political party. As prime minister, Schotte,as alleged by the OM and found proven by thejudge, abused his power in favour of Corallo.

Schotte was prime minister of Curacaofrom 2010 until 2012. He was the first primeminister of the new country Curacao, after theNetherlands Antilles was abolished. He alsofounded the political party MFK, which isnow the largest opposition party in parliament.

As expected, Schotte announced throughhis defence lawyer Eldon Sulvaran that he willappeal the judge’s decision. “We will appeal, which means that Schotte should still be con-sidered an innocent man,” Sulvaran said.

WEST PALM BEACH:

Caribbean women now have the ability tominimize cancer risk through a new ge-

netics program that can help determinewhether they are at risk for certain types ofcancer.

The program, at Tenet Florida’s GoodSamaritan Medical Center led by Dr ElisabethMcKeen, medical oncologist, and Conni Mur-phy, a nurse practitioner with specialized train-ing in cancer genetics, consists of a genetic

screening process and counseling sessions. If you knew you had the genetic marker

for a certain disease, would it make the differ-ence to motivate you to change your lifestyleand get healthy?

A growing understanding of human ge-netics holds the promise to dramaticallychange health care through customized pre-ventative care and treatments. Preventive med-icine is always the best and least expensivemedicine.

The results of genetic testing can help youmake informed decisions about how to bestmanage your future healthcare. They may alsoassist your doctor in developing a personalizedplan of care. For example, if it is determinedthat you are at risk for breast cancer, you maybe advised to add breast MRIs to your routinescreenings to aid in early detection. “The GoodSam Cancer Institute has been a leader in can-cer prevention and treatment within our com-munity for decades,” said CEO Mark Nosacka.

Newly elected Bronx District AttorneyDarcel Clark told New York City

Council members Tuesday that her officeneeds an additional $11.5 million to hire164 more employees and create a satelliteoffice on Rikers Island, among other initia-tives.

Clark's request is nearly 20 percentmore than the $59.6 million Mayor Bill deBlasio included for her office in his prelim-inary 2016-17 budget. The extra fundingwould grow the Bronx DA's office, nowwith 691 employees, including 458 prose-cutors, by more than 25 percent.

"My borough cannot go on like this, asa national emblem of criminal justice gonehaywire," Clark told the council's publicsafety committee.

All told, de Blasio proposed to spend$344 million for the city's five district at-torneys and the special narcotics prosecutorin the fiscal year that begins July 1, up from$337 million budgeted for the current fiscalyear.

The preliminary budget does not in-clude increases to staffing at the prosecu-tors' offices, which have a combined headcount of 3,357.

Clark became district attorney in Jan-uary, succeeding Robert Johnson, who heldthe office for 26 years. Johnson is now aSupreme Court justice.

Clark wants to launch the Rikers Is-land Prosecution Bureau, with 25 addi-tional prosecutors to investigate andprosecute crimes committed by inmates, correction officers and visitors.

She also wants the city to work withthe Office of Court Administration to createa new court part on Rikers Island, whichshe said would save money by reducing thenumber of times defendants and witnessesneed to be produced at the Bronx Hall ofJustice on East 161st St.

Weeks after Rolling Stones Magazine labelled Ri-hanna’s work Tropical House, another promi-

nent publication is at odds with dancehall.Billboard Online in a recent article titled “How

Rihanna’s ‘Work’ Made Dancehall Reign in PopAgain” referred to Sean Paul as the dancehall Kingwith SP’s Temperature in 2006 being the last dancehallsong to hit number one on the Billboard Hot One Hun-dred charts. This has opened a can of worms withdancehall insiders.

What defines a king of dancehall? Is it just aboutthe sales? It is clear from research that Billboard con-clusions are all based on sales, but dancehall is morethan the sales. Since the publication last week, dance-hall industry professionals have been weighing in.

Veterans like YellowMan, Shabba Ranks and Bee-nie Man have all been tossed around as having donethe ground work to be considered Kings in their ownrights.

Sean Paul has made the sales, topped the chartsand has a Grammy under his belt all without runningany sort of dancehall space in Jamaica, and running thespace is what many consider to be the true mark of adancehall King.

The debate is on, but what really is the criteria tobe crowned King? Why are so many credible main-stream media publications getting dancehall wrong?

Just last year in another controversial article, Bill-board named multi-platinum soul singer Joss StoneReggae Artiste of the Year.

PATERSON – A suspected city drug dealerwas arrested on murder charges Friday for al-legedly shooting a Sussex County man in the4th Ward on March 4, police said.

The victim, Justin Pease of Stanhope, managed to drive several blocks from thescene of the shooting before his Jeep crashedinto a utility pole, police said. Investigatorsinitially did not realize Pease was fatally shotwhen he was found dead in the vehicle andthought he may have suffered a drug over-

dose. But the case became a homicide inves-tigation after the bullet wound was detected.

The suspect, 22-year-old Davine Camp-bell, allegedly shot Pease in the area of Hamil-ton and Madison Avenues during the earlyafternoon, police said. Campbell was arrestedat his home near that same corner at 6:30 a.m.on Friday, according to Capt. Heriberto Ro-driguez. He is being held at the PassaicCounty Jail on $2.5-million bail, according toPassaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

The widow of the late reggae singer,Bunny Rugs has issued a statement

warning the members of the Third WorldBand of her intentions to take legal actionagainst them for failure to pay over moneysowed to the late singer.

According to Bouvier Clark, the widowof the former lead vocalist of the internation-ally acclaimed band, she has been ignoredand disrespected by the remaining membersof Third World.

In a news release, Clark revealed that asof July 2014, she was appointed as the per-sonal representative of the estate of WilliamClark a.k.a. "Bunny Rugs" by order of theDistrict Court of Osceola County in the Stateof Florida. Clark says gives her the right todemand, sue for, recover and receive allproperty belonging to William "BunnyRugs" Clark.

However, whencontacted the band’slegal representative, PaulBeswick, said the state-ments made by Clark arefalse. “Third World re-jects any assertion that ithas failed to account toBunny Rugs' estate orthat it holds any funds due

to be paid to the estate. The fact is that allpayments due to Bunny Rugs personally forroyalties and intellectual property rights arepaid individually by the various performingrights societies which handle payments ofthis kind,” the statement read.

PATERSON:

Former Paterson public safety directorGlenn Brown has filed a lawsuit against

the school district, faulting it for breach ofcontract for not following through on agree-ments to hire him for two different six-figurejobs more than a year ago.

Brown’s lawsuit also accuses schools su-perintendent Donnie W. Evans of discrimina-tion, claiming the woman the districtappointed to a position similar to the one hewas seeking is not a minority and is less qual-ified than he is. Both Brown and Evans areAfrican-Americans.

Brown’s proposed appointment in Sep-tember 2014 as the district’s $114,000 trans-portation director drew criticism from somePaterson education advocates who cited hislack of credentials for that position. Monthslater, the district created a new job at the same

salary -- director of operations – which ex-panded the transportation duties to includeoversight of emergency preparedness.

Brown claims in his lawsuit that Evansand his deputy superintendent, Eileen Shafer, both signed off on his appointment to the op-erations job in February and March 2015, butthe district quickly voided the hiring decision.

“To date, Plaintiff Brown has never re-ceived a phone call or letter terminating, re-jecting or withdrawing his appointment asDirector of Operations,” reads the lawsuit.

The school district declined to commenton the allegations. “The lawsuit speaks for it-self,” Brown said when asked for comment.Brown is collecting a $100,000 annual pen-sion after retiring after 10 years ago as chiefof detectives for the Passaic County Prosecu-tor’s Office.

Find out what to look for the next time you goto a beauty salon or spa and how it can affect

your health. The beauty salon or spa is supposed to be

every woman’s safe haven where she can relaxand unwind without worry.

Yet as it turns out, and unkempt salon canlead to lice, fungal infections and other healthrisks.

Before you commit to the chair or treatmentroom, look around and investigate. The extra timeyou take to ensure your well being is well worththe effort.

Is the salon tidy?• Look around. Is there hair everywhere? • Do the brushes, capes, towels, and other linenshave hair or debris in them? • Are color bowls and brushes sitting around un-attended?

• Are the rollers dirty or dingy? • Are combs, scissors and other reusable tools onthe counter instead of inside a sanitizing jar?

If you answered yes to one or more of thesequestions you may want to consider your salonof choice.

Investigate. • Find out if anyone has been to the salon or spayou’re planning to visit and ask about his or herexperience. • Also, check with the Better Business Bureauand online forums to see if there have been anycomplaints. • A place with a good reputation is more likely totake pride in its facilities and keep them clean.

BROOKLYN:

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYS-DTF) Commissioner Jerry Boone and Brooklyn Borough

President Eric L. Adams recently announced the availability offive free federal and state tax e-filing assistance sites throughoutBrooklyn for residents who earn less than $62,000.

At each of the sites, including four local branches of theBrooklyn Public Library, taxpayers will be able to completetheir tax returns with a user-friendly computer program that dra-matically reduces errors and finds all available tax credits; vol-unteers from NYSDTF will be available to answer questionsand provide assistance with the computer program. A majorityof New York State taxpayers have not yet filed returns for 2015;the deadline arrives on Friday, April 15th.

“Thanks to this initiative, many taxpayers throughoutBrooklyn may e-file their personal income tax return in a safe, secure, and confidential environment,” said NYSDTF Commis-sioner Boone. “This is a great option that can save filers hun-dreds of dollars that they might otherwise spend on a paidpreparer or tax software. While they’re saving money, they’llalso learn about valuable tax credits and receive the refundthey’ve earned.”

“Tax season can be challenging for those who lack the fi-nancial means to acquire the assistance of an expert who knowsall of the relevant credits and deductions, which is why initia-tives like these that educate and empower thousands of Brook-lynites are so valuable,” said Borough President Adams. “I ampleased to partner with colleagues on the city, state, and federallevel, to put hard-earned dollars back into homes across Brook-lyn, benefitting hard-working families that are the foundationof our borough.”

Filing assistance is available at: the Asian CommunityUnited Society, located at 6506 Bay Parkway in Bensonhurst,on Thursdays from 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM; the DeKalb branch ofthe Brooklyn Public Library, located at 790 Bushwick Avenuein Bushwick, on Mondays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM; the Ja-maica Bay branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, located at

9727 Seaview Avenue in Canar-sie, on Mondays from 10:00 AM– 4:00 PM as well as Thursdaysfrom 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM; theConey Island branch of theBrooklyn Public Library, locatedat 1901 Mermaid Avenue inConey Island, on Wednesdays andThursdays from 10:00 AM – 4:00PM; and the Red Hook branch ofthe Brooklyn Public Library, lo-

cated at 7 Wolcott Street in Red Hook, on Tuesdays from 1:00PM – 6:00 PM.

Should I see a Marriage CounselorDear Divine Diva:

I'm in love with a woman named "Camille" whohas three children from three different fathers. Shehas never been married. She also has a male "friend"whom she has her children calling "Daddy" eventhough he's not. I have loved Camille for 20 years, and our paths recently crossed again. When I firstmeet her, she had only one child.

Camille says she loves me and wants us to bemarried, but I'm having a hard time accepting that allof these children's fathers will be part of our life --as well as the "friend." Can a marriage counselorhelp me get past this? -- Devoted In The Bronx

Dear Devoted: I don't know. But before you take this relationshipfurther, you should definitely see one. Always DivineDiva

Judgmental and Sanctimonious People

Dear Divine Diva:

My husband and I are not religious. We believe that peo-ple are entitled to their own beliefs. My problem lies

with my brother-in-law and his wife. They are two of themost judgmental, sanctimonious people I have ever known. They "hate" (their word) Mormons, Catholics, etc. Howwould you suggest I respond to their criticism of our “lack"of Christianity and their offers to pray for us? -Kim, Bronx

Dear Kim: If your relatives are an example of people who practiceChristianity, heaven help the rest of us. If you must interactwith them practice selective deafness, and when they spouthatred, excuse your-selves. -Always Divine Diva

My wife lives with her mom!Five years ago, I married a 40-year-old woman I'll call

"Sandra." We had dated for eight years. My problem is,after all this time Sandra still has not moved into my home. She has never moved any of her personal belongings in ei-ther.

And she runs home to her mother's house five days aweek. When I try to talk to Sandra about this, she tells meshe will bring her "stuff" over, but then she returns to hermother's and nothing changes. Please tell me what to do.

-Lonely Spouse in New York

Dear Lonely Spouse: It appears your wife is having an unusually hard time sev-ering the umbilical cord with her mother, who may not evenbe aware that her daughter has a husband. Be-cause you and Sandra are so far apart on the amount of to-getherness it takes to nurture a successful marriage, offerher the option of marriage counseling. If she refuses, youshould consult a lawyer. -Divine Diva

To succeed in business today, you need to beflexible and have good planning and orga-

nizational skills. Many people start a businessthinking that they'll turn on their computers oropen their doors and start making money - onlyto find that making money in a business is muchmore difficult than they thought. You can avoidthis in your business ventures by taking yourtime and planning out all the necessary stepsyou need to reach to achieve success. Read onto find out how.

1. Get OrganizedTo be successful in business you need to be or-ganized. Organization will help you completetasks and stay on top of things to be done. Agood way to do this is to create a to-do list eachday - as you complete each item, check it offyour list. This will ensure that you're not forget-ting anything and you're completing all thetasks that are essential to the survival of yourbusiness.

2. Keep Detailed RecordsAll successful businesses keep detailed records.By keeping detailed records, you'll know wherethe business stands financially and what poten-tial challenges you could be facing. Just know-ing this gives you time to create strategies toovercome the obstacles that can prevent youfrom being successful and growing your busi-ness.

3. Analyze Your CompetitionCompetition breeds the best results. To be suc-cessful, you can't be afraid to study and learnfrom your competitors. After all, they may bedoing something right that you can implementin your business to make more money.

4. Understand the Risks and RewardsThe key to being successful is taking calculatedrisks to help your business grow. A good ques-tion to ask is "What's the downside?" If you cananswer this question, then you know what theworst-case scenario is. This knowledge willallow you to take the kinds of calculated risksthat can generate tremendous rewards for yourbusiness.

5. Be CreativeAlways be looking for ways to improve yourbusiness and to make it stand out from the com-petition. Recognize that you don't know every-thing and be open to new ideas and newapproaches to your business.

6. Stay FocusedThe old saying that "Rome was not built in aday" applies here. Just because you open a busi-ness doesn't mean that you're going to immedi-ately start making money. It takes time to letpeople know who you are, so stay focused on

achieving your short-term goals and give therest time to come together on its own.

7. Prepare to Make SacrificesThe lead-up to starting a business is hard work, but after you open your doors, your work hasjust begun. In many cases, you have to put inmore time than you would if you were workingfor someone else. In turn, you have to makesacrifices, such as spending less time with fam-ily and friends in order to be successful.

8. Provide Great ServiceThere are many successful businesses that for-get that providing great customer service is im-portant. If you provide better service for yourcustomers, they'll be more inclined to come toyou the next time they need something insteadof going to your competition.

9. Be ConsistentConsistency is key component to makingmoney in business. You have to consistentlykeep doing the things necessary to be successfulday in and day out. This will create long-termpositive habits that will help you make moneyover the long term.

ConclusionStarting and running a successful business canbe rewarding and challenging. Success requiresfocus, discipline and perseverance. However, success will not come over night - it requires along-term focus and that you remain consistentin challenging environments.
