Barack Hussein Obama isthe first African-
American to hold the office ofPresident of the United Statesand the first president to speakout in support of gay mar-riage. It was an historic moment
as only 39 percent of blacksfavor gay marriage, comparedwith 47 percent of whiteAmericans, according to aPew poll conducted in April. It was also important as
much of the opposition stemsfrom churches, which havelong been important institu-tions in the black community.
President Obama, who issaid to be a practicing hetero-sexual and Christian, finallyspoke up for the rights of gaycouples. Gay marriage is anidea whose time has come. And according to Obama andmany other people, it is the“civil rights” issue of our day.
However, it is the opinionof people that heterosexualsare becoming very fearful, ashomosexuals are everywhereexerting their influence, power and money on society. Political observers are
also claiming that with severalmonths to go before the presi-dential election, Obama’sendorsement of gay marriageis a strategy to seek morevotes as well as to fund hiselection campaign.
However, Republicanpresidential candidate MittRomney is among a signifi-cant number of people whoare upholding the traditionaland moral value of marriagebetween one man and onewoman. Nevertheless, we support
the “civil union” betweensame-sex couples, but believein the tradition of “marriage”between a man and a woman.

People are talking...!
The passing of the Queen of Disco,Donna Summer, born DonnaAdrian Gaines in Boston,
Massachusetts (my third home), rockedthe world this past week.
This iconic lady has left behind anenormous amount of hits that highlightedthe rise of the women’s revolutionarymovement of the 1970’s and 80’s.
Her struggle with lung cancer, unbe-knownst to many, took her suddenly, buthas left her hits such as "She Works Hardfor the Money”, “Let’s Dance" and my alltime favourite, "Love to Love You Baby.”
With such powerful women asDonna Summer and others who have trail-blazed the way for us to follow, can wetruly say that in the year 2012 we are liv-ing the lives that they envisioned? Are wemore or less liberated, especially sexually, than they were back in those days? GloriaSteinem, should we send you an “I am sosorry” card?
The ultimate “bad girl” showed usthat we could be sexually free withoutbeing promiscuous. That love and sexwere two separate things, and also that wehad the right to enjoy both.
Unfortunately though, many of us arestill living in the dark ages, where greatsex is still something we should neverexperience. Our husbands and lovers areunsure of how to deal with us, as theythemselves are still caught in the darkages.
They are caught gently between arock and a hard place! Do they encourageus to be sexually free when they are in bedwith us, or do they still need to be the king, the bedroom bully? Poor babies, as it trulymust not be an easy position to be placedin!
"What are you doing under the cov-ers?” my new man hesitantly asked me theother day early one Saturday morning."What do you think?” I asked him as Ireached lovingly for him, ready to wakehim up in the most pleasurable way; amove that he loves and appreciates.
"Is that why you woke me up at 6 amin the morning....for sex?," he continued toask. Without blinking an eye, I answeredhim bluntly, "Yes, what do you think I wasdoing, cleaning the house at 6 am in the
morning?", as I continued to work at mytask while staring at him deeply. Mum wasthe word after that! "Poor thing," I said tomyself. He obviously does not know whatto do with me!
Donna Summer would certainly beproud of me at that moment for sure, as Iwas fully in control of my sexuality, with-out being loose, common or easy.Hopefully, he appreciated it!
Deep within my heart I do believe thatwomen such as Donna Summer, GloriaSteinem, Madonna and many others werenot trying to be like men, as they realizedthat they could not be.
However, what they were fighting forthrough their music, lyrics, words, state-ments or speeches, was the equality ofwomen and our right to choose. They werenot fighting for us to be promiscuous, asmany of us are these days, calmly jumpingfrom man to man.
Sexuality to them was something thatwas innately built within them and shouldnot be stifled. Being happy with a lover, orbeing able to scream his name from the topof your lungs, or saying, "No, I like it ontop" to your husband or man does notmake you a whore. It makes you anempowered woman.
Be that empowered woman, one thatwould make Donna Summer and all theothers who came before us proud.
Be that bad girl for one man alone, sothat he will be the only one who you willsing "Hot Stuff" to, as you twirl around onthe bed in your lingerie, stilettos and hairall done to the max. Make Donna Summerproud I say! Darn it...make me proud!

‘Dudus' to wait for June 8 date
By HAroLD G. BAILEY observer writernEW YorK, USA —After several post-ponements, convicted Jamaican drug lordChristopher 'Dudus' Coke will be sen-tenced on June 8, 2012. one of Coke'sattorneys, Stephen H. rosen, told theJamaica Observer in an interviewWednesday (May 23) that even if thedefense brings evidence to rebut two daysof prosecution testimony to bolster theirdemand that Coke be given the maximumsentence, "he will be sentenced June 8."
rosen spoke to the Observer at theend of an evidentiary hearing in the matteryesterday in Manhattan.
Yesterday's court proceeding was sig-nificant for the damning evidence by a sec-ond prosecution witness, who implicatedprominent St. Catherine high school, St.Jago, in a drug-and-visa fraud ring linkedto Coke.
Anthony Brown, who is currently fac-ing a long prison term for drug offenses, said that he entered into a deal with Coke toget visas for his supporters on the pretextthat the visas were meant for legitimatemembers of the school's athletics team.
Brown testified that he was an assis-tant track and field coach at the school inthe 1990s when the plot was carried out,and alleged that other members of staff atthe school had knowledge of it.
He said that he obtained about 25 visasunder the scheme for Coke, but that he wasonly paid a fraction of the money agreedon. Brown said that the scheme unraveledwhen he decided to destroy a number ofpassports as he was no longer able to obtainthe visas due to policy changes at theUnited States Embassy in Kingston.
This, however, left his life in danger asmen from Coke's criminal network begansearching for him. It was then, he said, thathe decided to flee to the United Stateswhere he subsequently ran into trouble.

Brooklyn CoupleCharged WithStealing from Their Disabled Son’s Trust Fund
BROOKLYN:
Two Brooklyn parents, EdwinSanango, 39, and Marlene Romero,
37 of Brooklyn were arrested on Friday(April 13) and charged with drainingmore than $1 million from a trust createdto supplement their son medical care, butafter his death, was supposed to be used toreimburse the Human ResourcesAdministration (HRA).
After the son died both defendantswere arrested after attempting to make awithdrawal on the trust within minutes ofa scheduled transfer from an annuity tothe trust account.
No withdrawals were made on thetrust during Eddie’s lifetime, but an inves-tigation revealed that between his deathand March 2012, more than $1 millionwas removed from the account.
After spending his entire life institu-tionalized, Eddie died in March 2008. Thecharges indicate that the defendants resis-ted HRA’s repeated attempts to contactthem for reimbursement for the more than$1.8 million it spent on Eddie’s treat-ments.
“Instead of spending their son’smoney to improve his short and difficultlife, these defendants placed him in state-run hospitals and waited till he died tospend his money on themselves,” saidKings County District Attorney Charles J.Hynes.
The parents are charged with GrandLarceny in the First Degree, which carriesa maximum sentence of 25 years inprison.
Their son, Eddie, was born in 1993.He was left permanently disabled, as theresult of negligent medical care during thedelivery. Sanango and Romero, on behalfof Eddie and themselves, won a $2 mil-lion judgment against the hospital,$150,000 of which was paid out to themimmediately.
The rest was placed in an annuity, with regular payments deposited into aSupplemental Needs Trust, created tocover Eddie’s living expenses and stillallow him to qualify for Medicaid.Sanango and Romero were named jointtrustees.

Cops to End Stop-and-Frisk of Livery Cab PassengersIn settling a federal lawsuit filed by the NewYork Civil Liberties Union, the Bloombergadministration has agreed to train NYPD offi-cers to stop the unlawful practice of detaining,
questioning and searching innocent NewYorkers – particularly people of color – whoare passengers in livery cabs.
The NYCLU filed the lawsuit in May2011, charging that the NYPD had used its
Taxi/Livery Inspection Program (TRIP) toexpand the reach of its unconstitutional stop-and-frisk practices. Plaintiffs Terrence Battleand Munir Pujara, both men of color, wereriding in livery cabs and were detained, ques-tioned and searched even though the liverydrivers told officers there was no problem andeven though the officers did not suspect theplaintiffs of any wrongdoing.
“Being pulled out of a livery car late atnight when I had done nothing wrong wasoutrageous and frightening,” Battle said. “Ican only hope this settlement saves othersfrom a similar experience.”
Under the settlement, the NYPD lastweek instructed all officers about the lawfultreatment of passengers, directing them thatthey are not to question, frisk, search ordemand identification from passengers simplybecause they are riding in cars participating inthe TRIP program. Instead, officers are to takeno action against passengers unless the offi-cers have independent suspicion that the pas-senger has committed a crime.

CARIBBEAN countries recordedmixed economic growth last year as
they continued to grapple with the falloutfrom the global economic and financialcrisis.
But the Barbados-based CaribbeanDevelopment Bank (CDB) is projectingeconomic growth of between one and 1.5per cent in 2012.
The CDB, in its annual review of theregional countries, said that the growthranged from a downturn in countries likeTrinidad and Tobago, Antigua andBarbuda and St Vincent and theGrenadines to marginal growth in coun-tries like Barbados, St Lucia and theBritish Virgin Islands.
But the CDB, which is the region’s
premier development banking institution, said The Bahamas, Belize Dominica,Jamaica and Grenada all recorded“stronger than marginal growth” whileonly Haiti and Guyana had economicgrowth in excess of five per cent in 2011.
The CDB said that emerging anddeveloping economies have been the keydrivers of the global economic recovery, asadvanced economies, the region’s maintrading partners, have continued to strug-gle with “lingering weakness in financial, labour and housing markets”.
It said the recovery in the bank’s bor-rowing member states in the region “hastherefore lagged behind” and that prelimi-nary estimates indicate that 12 of the 18countries registered expansion in real out-put during the year.

The paper outlines thecurrent state of U.S. govern-ment collection of biometricinformation and the prob-lems that could arise fromthese growing databases ofrecords. It also points outhow immigrant communitiesare immediately affected bythe way this data is collect-ed, stored and shared.
There is a growing pushto link biometric collectionwith immigration enforce-ment. The U.S. Departmentof Homeland Security(DHS) takes approximately300,000 fingerprints per dayfrom non-U.S. citizenscrossing the border into theUnited States, and it collectsbiometrics from noncitizens
applying for immigrationbenefits and from immi-grants who have beendetained.
In addition, state andlocal law enforcement offi-cers regularly collect finger-prints and DNA, as well asface prints and even irisscans. All of these govern-ment databases are growingand increasingly intercon-nected.
For example, the SecureCommunities program takesthe fingerprints of peoplebooked into local jails, matches them to prints con-tained in large federal immi-gration databases, and thenuses this information todeport people.
“Some people believebiometrics and databases arethe silver bullets that willsolve the immigrant enforce-ment dilemma. But biomet-rics are not infallible, anddatabases contain errors.
“These problems canresult in huge negative con-sequences for U.S. citizensand legal immigrants mis-takenly identified,” saidMichele Waslin, SeniorPolicy Analyst at the IPCwho moderated a telebrief-ing today to release thepaper.
“Biometric data collec-tion can lead to racial profil-ing and can disproportion-ately affect immigrants,”said EFF Staff Attorney andreport author JenniferLynch. “It also gives thegovernment a new way tofind and track peoplethroughout the UnitedStates.
The government needsto act now to limit unneces-sary biometric collection andaddress the serious privacyissues regarding the amountand type of data collected, aswell as what triggers thatdata collection, with whomthe data is shared and thesecurity of that data.”
“Some in Congressbelieve that we shouldaddress immigrant enforce-ment by requiring all USworkers—citizens andimmigrants alike—to pro-vide biometric informationfor a new employment iden-tification card,” saidJonathan Weinberg,Professor of Law at WayneState University, also a gueston today’s call. “Under thathugely expensive approach, database and biometricerrors would inevitably tripup a huge number of work-ing Americans.

YOUTH in FOCUS
Ask Dr Karen Gordon

It has been found that blackchildren with autism areusually diagnosed later than
white children with the disorder. There may be many rea-
sons for this. First, black fami-lies may not have access toquality, affordable or culturallyknowledgeable health care.
This results in an autisticchild going through a healthcare system undetected. Thedoctors may also not recognizeearly symptoms of autism andas a result, do not provide adiagnosis. Second, there is asocial stigma associated withmental health care within theblack community.
Some black parents maynot accept a diagnosis of autismand may be reluctant to get helpfor their child on that basis.Because of this stigma, individ-uals of the black community areless likely to make use of themental health care available tothem and terminate treatmentearlier when compared to other
races. Lastly, misdiagnosis is apotential problem.
Researchers note thatexcept for a brain scan, there areno subjective criteria to diag-nose autism. Black childrenmay not have access to this typeof concrete and comprehensivemedical evaluation and there-fore are subject to misdiagnosisof autism.
Receiving an early diagno-sis of autism is critical for achild. The most appropriate ageof diagnosis is 3 years. At 3years of age the child can beplaced in an early interventionprogram that will teach develop-mental skills.
Early intervention alsoallows a child’s behavior to bemolded and ensures the mostdevelopmental success.Intervention at a later age resultsin poorer developmental out-comes. Therefore, the earlier achild is diagnosed with autism, the better the chance of a suc-cessful intervention.
Dr. Karen Gordon is a licensed psychologist with 13 years experience, spe-cializing in disruptive behaviors in children and adolescents. If you have aquestion or concern, please forward by emailing her at: [email protected].

As people continue to search for ways toeat better and stay healthy, they also try
to find water and other drinks that are health-ier. Many people have resorted to drinkingbottled water or filtering tap water to removesome chemicals and to improve the taste. Insome places on the planet people are drinkingKangen Water.
Water is certainly essential to animal andplant health. Human bodies are composed of60 to 80 percent water. Keeping the bodyhydrated by supplying our cells with freshwater should be a daily habit. We recovermore slowly from illness and injury when wedon’t take in enough water. In fact, researchshows that humans might age more quicklyand become ill more easily without the prop-er amount of drinking water each day.
Special Water? Some people are trying something called
Kangen Water, which is presented as thepurest available and therefore healthier for usthan “regular” water. Just what is KangenWater and why is it different? First things first– Kangen water has become very familiar topeople in Japan. It’s believed to be better foryou because it is mineral-rich and containsfew if any free radicals (removed by ioniza-tion).
The name “Kangen Water” implies thatpeople who are drinking it are returning to theorigin, drinking water that is not contaminat-ed by chemicals and industrial pollution.Drinking water without filtering it or treatingit to remove pollutants may keep people fromgrowing and remaining healthy the way theyshould.
Kangen Water is marketed as being veryalkaline, with a pH level between 8.5 and 11.
Many of the foods and drinks we ingestare known to be highly acidic so this new typeof water might help reduce the effects of highacid levels.
What’s an Antioxidant?Antioxidants are thought to balance the
body’s acidity and reduce the effects of harshchemicals and pollutants in what we eat anddrink. Kangen Water reportedly tests verywell when measured for oxidizing potentialand antioxidant properties. This is importantbecause the human body is constantlyexposed to polluting substances from food, alcohol, tobacco and from the air we breathe.
This puts large amounts of free radicalsin our bodies. The structure of free radicalsmeans they are often the root cause of amajority of diseases and major illnesses.
Kangen Water reportedly gives us waterthat doesn’t introduce new free radicals andmay help to reduce the effects of free radicalsalready in our bodies. This “new” type ofwater is intended to bring acid and free-radi-cal theory to the water we drink every day.
While some may see this as another“miracle” supplement program, the compa-nies offering Kangen Water present it as a nat-ural and logical way to get the water we needeach day. If you are considering the purchaseof a Kangen Water machine visit the website:

Older men have differentinterests and priorities
As guys mature and get older, they tend tochange their interests and priorities. Mostguys in their twenties go out clubbing or goout trying to pick up girls with their friendson the weekend. As they get older theyslowly change and go out less and less.
Added to this, they usually have anestablished career and are not too worriedabout money. This is fantastic, as they willoften have more time to spend with youinstead of going out with the boys or focus-ing on their jobs.
Older men have higher standards for your behavior
Remember when you were 18 and you did alot of flirting with other guys in front ofyour boyfriend? Older men have been onmore dates and in more relationships thanyounger guys, so they have seen it allbefore.
So one of the best tips for dating oldermen that I can give you is to remember thatolder men have higher standards when itcomes to your behavior. Things like flirtingwith other men and turning up late for dateswon't make them jealous. It will make themlose respect for you.
Don't be a gold diggerSure, we'd like to think of ourselves as inde-pendent women. But at the back of ourminds, we would still love to find a guy thatwants to take care of us.
With that in mind, a lot of older guyshave their guards up when it comes to dat-ing younger women. They are afraid thatyou are just some gold digger looking forrich men, so you have to be careful abouthow you treat the relationship.
If you insist on him paying for every-thing, then you are sending bad signals. It'sbetter to pay for your half. But it's best topay your half unless he insists on paying.
There is no need to make a big deal out
of paying as long as you are happy to pay ifhe expects it.
Beware the 'beauty hunter'It's great dating an older guy, especiallywhen he can show you new experiences andyou are both compatible with each other.
There is a flip side, however. Someolder men are only out to find a “hot pieceof arm candy”. They only want a cute girl, but don't care about who she is in the slight-est. Bottom line: They only want you foryour looks.
Beauty Hunters do things like: Onlyhang out with you at night.
They don't have much interest in yourhobbies or interests.
They don't introduce you to their socialcircle.
They call a lot when they're drunk(booty call).
They never want to do what you wantto do.If you're happy to be with a guy who likesyou only for your beauty/youth, then that'syour prerogative. But if you don't like thatsort of thing, watch out for these major signsand stay away!

Dear Divine:Can you give me some advice or guide-lines to follow when trying to find aloving, caring man to be in a healthy
relationship?- P Thompson, Bx
Dear P:If a man wants you, nothing can keep himaway. If he doesn’t want you, nothing canmake him stay.
Stop making excuses for a man and hisbehavior. Allow your intuition (or spirit) tosave you from heartache. Stop trying tochange yourself for a relationship that’s notmeant to be. Slower is better. Never live yourlife for a man before you find what makes youtruly happy. If a relationship ends because theman was not treating you as you deserve then, heck no, you can’t “be friends”.
A friend wouldn’t mistreat a friend.Don’t settle. If you feel like he is stringingyou along, then he probably is. Don’t staybecause you think “it will get better”. You’llbe mad at yourself a year later for stayingwhen things are not better.
The only person you can control in arelationship is you. Avoid men who’ve got abunch of children by a bunch of differentwomen. He didn’t marry them when he gotthem pregnant. Why would he treat youany differently? Always have your own set offriends separate from his.
Maintain boundaries in how a guy treatsyou. If something bothers you, speak up.Never let a man know everything. He will useit against you later. You cannot change aman’s behavior. Change comes from within.Don’t EVER make him feel he is more impor-tant than you are… even if he has more edu-
cation or is in a better job. Do not make himinto a quasi-god.
He is a man, nothing more, nothing less.Never let a man define who you are. Neverborrow someone else’s man. If he cheatedwith you, he’ll cheat on you. A man will onlytreat you the way you ALLOW him to treatyou. All men are NOT dogs. You should notbe the one doing all the bending…compro-mise is a two-way street. You need time toheal between relationships… there is nothingcute about baggage… deal with your issuesbefore pursuing a new relationship.

GEMINI (May 21 – Jun. 20):Although you might feel over-whelmed for a while, you should beable to pull it all together by theend of the day. Don't complain, even if you temporarily regret howmuch you promised. If you just stayfocused and work steadily, youcould have enough time left over tohave some fun.
CANCER (Jun. 21 – Jul. 22): Youcould lose your momentum bythinking of all the reasons you can'tdo something that you really wantto do. Your inner strength gives youenough clarity of vision now so youcan organize many disparate puzzlepieces into a comprehensive pic-ture. Although your friends showup to support your efforts, it's up toyou to accept the assistance that'soffered.
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Yourmoods seem to be changing quick-ly now and it's difficult to knowhow you're going to feel next. Evenif you can leap tall thoughts in asingle bound, you still need to fol-low through with sensible action. There's nothing wrong with havingyour head in the clouds as long asyou can keep your feet on theground at the same time.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22): Youcan accomplish a tremendousamount of work now and your pro-ductivity is likely to be positivelyacknowledged by others. Youmight not even realize if you'vepushed too far. Don't assume moreresponsibilities than you can realis-tically handle.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 – Oct.22): Youcan be a case study for the power ofpositive thought. You're on a pro-ductive high now and might evenbe able to imagine something rightinto existence. It's too bad you can'tbottle this confidence for a rainyday. Give yourself a bit of leewaytoday to wander off track and don'tbe afraid to daydream along theway.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):You honestly might not think youhave time to relax enough to havethe fun that is right in front of yournose. Acknowledge the limitationsof what you cannot do in the pres-ent moment. Then, you will befreer to explore the deeper meaningof life without the burden of havingto find the right answer.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22–Dec.21): You might get caught upin a minor power struggle today asyou move through the changes thatare being demanded of you. If yourcommitment to a larger cause ismore important than achievingyour personal goals, you should beable to gracefully navigate yourway through the resistance.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan.19): You might feel a bit uncom-fortable today as you try to get pastyour self-imposed restrictions inorder to take advantage of theexciting opportunities that arebeing presented to you. You couldlearn something new if you don'tretreat too quickly.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):Someone might come to you withsuch a good idea today that it's hardto resist. You may be feeling soupbeat now that nearly everyopportunity looks worthwhile.Fortunately, there's no reason toreact negatively; just remain opento modifying your position as moreand more of the truth is unveiled.
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20): Youmay mistakenly believe that youcan see the whole picture now.Sure, you can visualize it all, butyou could jump to a wrong conclu-sion or miss an important detailthat's integral to making the rightchoices. Just remember not to over-commit or you might end up regret-ting your decision.
