From the Pastor April 19th, 2020

Today is Divine Mercy

Sunday. It is the last day

in the octave (8 day

celebration) of Easter. On

April 30th, 2000 , Pope

St. John Paul II

established it as a day

especially dedicated to

the mercy of God . In so

doing, he emphasized the

fittingness of focusing on

this specific attribute of God.

As humans, we tend to relate to God in

different ways at different times. Sometimes

we reflect upon God as our creator and

sustainer. At other times, we relate to him as

our savior and redeemer or as our Father and

friend. Similarly, we will ponder God under a

particular attribute like truth, wisdom,

patience, power, goodness, knowledge, etc.

Though this is necessary for us in our finite

humanity, it is important for us to realize that

all these things are perfectly unified, perfectly

one in God. This is of particular importance

when considering God’s mercy.

There is a perennial temptation, when

reflecting on the mercy of God, to place it in

opposition to His justice. The result is that we

develop a tendency to think we need to

convince an angry and just God to be merciful

with us poor sinners. We need to persuade Him

to take it easy on us. We need to earn His

forgiveness with pious practices or specific

devotions—like the devotion to the Divine

Mercy. This, of course, is false. In God, justice

and mercy are the same thing. He is absolutely

one; He is unchanging in His disposition

toward us. We recall the name He revealed to

Moses: “I AM WHO AM” of which God

further said, “this is my name forever, the

name you shall call me from generation to

generation” (Exodus 3). God does not change.

He Is. What then are we doing on Divine

Mercy Sunday when we invoke Him under His

attribute of mercy rather than justice? We are

asking not that He would change, but that, by

His grace, we would. An image might help us

to better understand this. Imagine God seated

on His throne; from Him shines forth a

brilliant, burning radiance. This radiance

permeates all of creation. For those who love

Him, the radiance is experienced as a

illuminating and vivifying energy. For those

who hate Him, it is experienced as burning,

destructive fire.

A biblical example of this imagery would be

two different responses to the presence of

Jesus. When Jesus was presented in the temple,

the man of God, Simeon, cried out with joy:

“Lord, now you let your servant go in peace;

your word has been fulfilled: my own eyes

have seen the salvation which you have

prepared in the sight of every people: a light to

reveal you to the nations and the glory of your

people Israel” (Luke 2)! Alternatively, when

Jesus approached the demoniac, the demon

cried out in terror: “What have you to do with

us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to

destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy

One of God!” (Mark 1).

Therefore, this Divine Mercy Sunday, we

engage in special prayers and devotions, not

that God would be won over, but that we

would be. We pray that our hearts and minds

might experience the conversion necessary to

rejoice always in the presence of the Lord,

experiencing His presence as a radiant,

vivifying light of mercy.

Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!

In Christ,

Fr. Nicks

HOPE BENEFIT Hope Fundraiser Dinner & Auction - EVENT CHANGED!

WWCS Friends and Families- HOPE 2020, an “Enchanted Night of HOPE,” was originally scheduled for April 25th. This annual fundraiser dinner and auction provides tremendous support for our schools and tuition assistance for our families. As you may have already anticipated, we will NOT be moving forward with HOPE on that date. Fortunately though, the Walla Walla Catholic Schools Association of Alumni and Friends has their 5 YEAR ALL SCHOOL REUNION coming up this summer, and they have agreed to let us merge with them and bring aspects of HOPE into that weekend’s events. It will be one BIG party celebrating our schools’ great history and bright future held at DeSales High School! Mark your calendars now for Saturday, June 27th, and watch your mailbox for more details as we work hard to create this new event. If you already received an invitation to the June event, those details will not change. See you there!

Prayer for Spiritual Communion My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You.

Amen.

Divine Mercy Sunday is today, Sunday, April 19th.

GOSPEL READING APRIL 19, 2020 JN 20:19-31

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Mission Statement: The Ti-parish Catholic Social Concerns Ministry is made up of parishioners from St. Patrick, St. Francis and Assumption parishes, who strive, in the light of Gospel values, to raise awareness of and address social concerns in our community and society through word and deed. For more information regarding this column please contact Sue Logsdon at

[email protected] Divine Mercy Sunday, 2nd Sunday of Easter LEARN – CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES – Faith. Action. Results. CRS carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. Please turn in your Rice Bowl to Assumption church (M-Su, 7 am – 8 pm) or St. Patrick church (open 8:30 -3 pm M-F). Both churches have baskets for all 3 parishes for your contribution to the CRS Rice Bowl. Write your name and parish on your Rice bowl. Or you can mail your donation to your parish office. It's not too late to be generous. REFLECT Looking back at this past Lent and your celebration of Easter, reflect on whether social distancing has impacted your faith and celebration of Christ's resurrection. Has your prayer life changed? Could you connect your suffering in some simple with the suffering that Jesus endured? How can you maintain your devotion to prayer and alms giving now that Lent is over? When our community returns to 'normal' and we can again attend Mass and receive other sacraments, will it be with a renewed sense of faith and a deep gratitude for Christ in our lives or will we quickly return to life as usual? This Easter season is a wonderful opportunity to renew our belief in Christ and his gift of sacrifice and salvation. ACT Divine Mercy Sunday focuses on the gift of mercy and love given through Christ's death, burial and resurrection. As Pope St. John Paul II stated “Divine mercy reaches human beings through the heart of Christ crucified.” Mercy is a gift that God gives us freely. As his followers we too should show mercy toward others through our generosity to help those in need, through our prayers for those ill or in despair, through our sharing of our faith in God's love for us with those who don't believe, through the way we see God's presence in all we meet. PRAY- if you included more prayer in your Lenten devotions, don't stop them now. Continue praying the rosary, reading the Bible (especially the daily Scripture readings of the Church), the Divine Office, lifting those in need up in prayer. The Tri-Parish Prayer Group and Assumption parish both take prayer requests. Participate in Adoration at Assumption Church. Check the bulletin for other ideas. REACH OUT TO OTHERS- check on those in quarantine (by phone or social media if possible) and see if they need help with groceries, medication or even just a cheerful hello. Let those living alone know they are being thought of. GIVE- if you are financially able, continue to give to your parish (the parishes have bills that need to be paid just like us); donate to local agencies and ministries that aid those in our community that are hurting: Catholic Charities, St. Vincent de Paul, Food for the Hungry (at each parish), Christian Aid Center, Sleep Center, Blue Mt Food Bank, United Way/Blue Mt Community Foundation (for flood relief), to name just a few. KEEP THE FAITH- trust in God's unlimited love and mercy. Remember His only son gave his life for our salvation. We will get through this health and social crisis with the help of our Lord. If in doubt, listen to Pope Francis' daily messages (go to the Vatican website), read of God's love for us in the Bible and support one another with love and joy. Concentrate on the silver linings in your life rather than the obstacles. STUDY- extra time on your hands? Take an online Bible study or listen to Catholic speakers, many of whom are now free (check out Formed.org, Jeff Cavins at Ascension Press, Dr. Brant Pitre at Catholic Productions, Marcus Grodi at the Coming Home Network- Deep in Scripture or The Journey Home). Check out the USCCB site for a wide variety of topics. Listen to positive podcasts about the faith, tune in to KHSS radio at 100.7 FM for Catholic inspiration.

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you

did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our

families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of

those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus

to our land and to our hearts. Amen..

TRI-PARISH DIAPER DRIVE There is now a Baby carriage in the back of Assumption Church to make donations of diapers and wipes for Catholic Charities and other agencies in town that are in need of

diapers. It will be there year round. Swing by anytime for a visit with Jesus and leave the diapers in the carriage or bring them with you when you come to confession.

There was a Tri-Parish parking lot Mass on Easter Vigil. All were invited to come and remain in their cars. It was

well lit up and beautiful to be present at Mass even though we could not receive Holy Communion. We made a

Dios no cambia.

Has venido a destruirnos? Yo sé quien eres—El Santo de Dios!” (Marcos 1).
