WHAT CAN I STUDY?

LEVEL 3 COURSES You may choose to study AS Levels (1 year course) leading to A Levels the following year (a further 1 year course) or L3 BTEC courses (2 year courses). In most subjects if you follow an AS level course you will take several module exams at the end of Year 12, leading to further modules at the end of Year 13 to complete the A Level qualification. BTEC courses generally consist of modules examined through coursework assignments over the course of 2 years & are the equivalent qualification to an A level. AS levels are the first part of a full A level & are normally taught in year 12. They currently stand as qualifications in their own right, becoming a full A level upon successful completion of A Level in year 13. AS courses are taught for 5 hours per subject per week in year 12 with 4 hours of contact time at A Level in Year 13. This allows a greater emphasis on independent learning as preparation for higher education, a modern apprenticeship or work. All L3 courses are full time courses. You can choose a combination of qualifications to include traditionally academic subjects & more vocational and applied courses. The entry requirement for Level 3 courses is a minimum of 5 passes at grades A* - C in 5 different subjects, including English and Maths. For some subjects a grade B at GCSE will be required. Most students choose 4 subjects in Year 12 and having taken exams in these 4 subjects will then continue with 3 subjects in Year 13 ending up with the equivalent of 3 A levels & 1 AS level. As part of the Raising of the Participation Age

legislation, the Government has an expectation that post 16 students who have not yet achieved a grade C at GCSE in either English and/or Maths should continue to study for these qualifications. As such GCSE resit courses in English and Mathematics are available in scheduled slots out of the school day to avoid clashes with AS/A Level classes.

LEVEL 2 COURSES We also offer a range of occupational one year courses. These offer you the chance to achieve recognised qualifications and work related skills. Students who apply for these courses usually have a mix of grades between C to G at GCSE. These courses are valuable and come as part of a package including further development of Level 2 English, Maths, ICT & Finance along with enrichment options such as Young Enterprise or Duke of Edinburgh Awards schemes which are aimed at developing wider skills such as confidence, team work, decision making & problem solving. We may also include a work experience placement. Students often progress onto L3 courses if they achieve good outcomes from their courses. A good reference showing expected high attendance and good effort from the Head of Year 11 is essential to access Level 2 courses.

Period 6: To accommodate the widest range of student choices we sometimes timetable post 16 lessons differently, using period 6 (2 hours after school). If this is the case you will be informed before you confirm courses in September.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?AS - You will work in a range of areas of study for example: Digital photography – including manipulation, computer packages; Creative image presentation – including stop motion, collage, photomontage; traditional photography – including black and white film, process and developing. AImS Of THE COURSETo think in a computational way using reasoning and logic. Use abstraction and decomposition to break problems down into chunks which can be solved and built on.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?Computing is a technical subject. It is a good foundation for understanding future challenges as it builds on fundamentals of data representation, programming, problem solving and the logic inherent in system design.

AS Unit 1 is a practical, on-screen, examination asking you to show knowledge of fundamental principles, focusing on programming through a problem-solving scenario using pre-release material. You learn to program in either Python or VB.Net and other languages, such as Java.Unit 2 focuses on hardware and software. You look at how different elements of a computer system work including system, application software and development software. You learn about the structure of the internet and its components.

A2 Unit 3 focuses on computational thinking, what can be computed, programming and problem-solving including communication and networking (building on the technical knowledge you learned in Unit 2).Unit 4 is internally assessed; here you report on a computer-based programmed solution which you have created. You have to code to solve a real world problem.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?You may not have come across Economics before. It is an exciting and relevant subject that is useful in the workplace. It helps you to understand finance and economics. If you are interested in current affairs and how the economy works, this is the subject for you.

AS - Unit 1 Competitive Markets — How They Work; Why They Fail. For example, how do we solve the economic problem by producing goods and services? We have an insatiable desire to consume more than we produce, so we have to ration our scarce resources. We do this through wealth and prices. The system works well when producing consumer goods but not so well when we think about things like street lights, health or defence. In such cases we might need government intervention to help to correct the market.Unit 2 Managing the Economy. This examines issues such as unemployment, inflation, the balance of payments and economic growth and what can make them better or worse. We look at the government’s budget and ask questions like… “Is it right to be worried about reducing the budget deficit in a time of recession?”

A Level - Unit 3 Business Economics & Economic Efficiency – this looks more closely at firms and how they operate. How do we work out how much we get paid? You will study things like mergers, efficiency, diminishing returns and business activity from the point of view of society rather than just profit calculations. Unit 4 The Global Economy – You will study issues like… Can we continue to buy more from the rest of the world than we sell to it? Are we trying to sustain an unsustainable lifestyle? Can models help us predict the economic future? If so why didn’t we predict the credit crunch?

WHAT WILL I STUDY?The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certificate demonstrates that you have specialist skills in using Microsoft applications. It is a globally recognised Certificate. You will study certificates in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel which will give you the skills to use them in a range of given scenarios. Microsoft say it is the “only comprehensive, performance-based certification program approved by Microsoft to validate desktop computer skills.” All Level 2 students will complete certificates in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel to enhance their ICT skills.

HOW WILL I bE ASSESSED?You will be assessed by completing three on screen tests which are run when you are ready to complete them, allowing for you to be completely confident before you take the test. If all three certificates have been achieved they can be put towards a B at GCSE from OCR.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?You will be required to work independently on the areas of maths posing you most difficulties. This qualification develops knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods & concepts, including: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measures, Statistics and Probability. You will use your knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts. You will learn how to apply mathematics in everyday and real-life situations. HOW WILL I bE ASSESSED?Examinations will be taken in May. In exceptional circumstances there is also an opportunity in November. The examination consists of two equally weighted papers, each lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes. One paper requires the use of a calculator, the other is non-calculator.

AImS Of THE COURSEBe able to: Demonstrate and apply skills, knowledge and understanding involved in the production and on-going care of plants for different planting schemes, indoors and out. Alternatively, demonstrate caring for livestock at different stages of their lives and for different purposes.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?An introduction to important topics in horticulture. You will learn to care for plants in outdoor sites and under glass and will design an exhibition garden plot of your own. You will develop your skills, perhaps to start work as a garden centre worker or assistant grounds-keeper or prepare for further training. If you work on the livestock course you will learn about rearing livestock, working with machinery, site security and biosecurity, responsible and lawful waste disposal, how

to administer veterinary medicines and knowledge of the law relating to the agricultural industry.

HOW WILL I bE ASSESSED?These qualifications are assessed by assignments and in lessons. Your teacher watches and asks questions as you perform tasks, or looks at a portfolio of work that you’ve built as evidence of your learning. There are no formal examinations. Depending on the size of the qualifications you choose, you might also do work experience and gainpractical skills on the job. You will keep a daily log of activities and skills.

WHERE DOES THIS SUbjECT LEAD?Developing your skills, knowledge and understanding perhaps to start work as a gardener, garden centre worker Farmworker or assistant grounds-keeper, or prepare for further training.

Once you’ve completed the Level 2 qualification you can move onto Level 3 or Level 2 or 3 qualifications in Work-based Horticulture or related industries, e.g: arboriculture, green keeping, garden design, and landscape gardening.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardWe are delighted to be able to offer our students the opportunity to take part in this Award. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a personalised programme aimed at supporting young people (aged 14-25) with their personal development. It offers students the chance to let individual talents shine and to develop skills vital to employers and further education in an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding setting. The Award encourages students to get involved in volunteering out of school to give back to their local community.

The Award operates at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. We are currently expanding our work in this area. We offer the Silver Award in Year 12 and also work with other year groups. In addition to learning a new skill, engaging in physical activity and volunteering in our local community, there is now an Expedition Section, a 2 or 3 day journey in the countryside. This is a new experience for many and encourages self-reliance, independence and teamwork.

Young Enterprise Company ProgrammeLEVEL Level 2

This course is also available as one of the Level 3 enrichment courses in Year 13 and is taken as an extra curricular subject.

AImS Of THE COURSEBe able to: run your own Limited company, trading to the public, designing your own product or service and becoming a director in charge of a particular area of business.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?Students set up and run a real firm for a year under the guidance of a business volunteer. You will get practical experience of the joys and pitfalls of creating a truly functioning enterprise doing everything from raising start-up capital, to designing and making your product or service and selling to customers at trade fairs. Ultimately you will wind up your firm and pay your taxes!

This programme has been running since 1963 with over a million 15-19 year olds taking part during this time.This course develops key skills that enhance your employability and enterprise capabilities. Many ex members of the Company Programme have gone on to outstanding careers as entrepreneurs, corporate executives and public figures. Employers tend to look favourably on students who have taken part in the programme. At Level 3, this course is also worth up to 40 UCAS points that count towards entry into university.
