KIDS AND STRATHMORE: ARTS IN THE RIGHT PLACE

Strathmore launched its “Art, Who’s Art?” campaign several months ago to highlight our ongoing efforts in children’s education. We want kids to know that art is not a person; rather “art” is creative expres-sion that is essential to a child’s growth and ulti-mately contributions to society.

Essential—but not guaranteed. Access to high quality arts programming that won’t force the fam-ily budget to hit a high note is becoming increas-ingly rare.

Kids around here just call it summertime fun. That’s because when school lets out we put arts educa-tion for children on center stage, with free and family-priced events that promote creativity and inspire imagination. “Who’s Art?” No, at Strath-more kids know “What’s art.”

BACKYARD THEATER

SUMMER CALENDAR— BY GENRE

Inform/Re-formJUNE 30–AUGUST 18It’s not easy being green—even at Strathmore. And it isn’t enough to be sustainable and made from repurposed materials, either. Every piece on display in the Inform/Re-form exhibition has to have artistic integrity as well as a pedigree that can be traced back to an unexpected origin.

“When people come to the show it’s not going to be obvious, expected ‘found-object’ creations,” explains Harriet Lesser, Strathmore’s Fine Art cura-tor. “It’s very contemporary; we’re taking a look at what’s going on at the edge of this genre of art.”

Lesser says it will be followed by a more traditional show in the fall. “It’s just how Strathmore rolls,” she says, “mixing old and new; searching for a sequence that will challenge and delight its audience.”

She observes it’s not singular to the Fine Art department. “In art, as in mu-sic, there’s a crossover. We are always bringing in a new voice; a new way of viewing things—a new idea.”

SkinSEPTEMBER 15–NOVEMBER 3For some people the body is a canvas; the ultimate vehicle for self-expression. Skin explores the art of body modification and the historical and cultural significance of epidermal décor.

79th Annual Fine Art in MiniatureNOVEMBER 17–DECEMBER 29While each piece in this amazing exhibition is produced in miniature, every one represents a massive dab of talent and tender loving care.

22nd Annual Strathmore Artists Juried ExhibitionJANUARY 7–FEBRUARY 9This exclusive and exquisite juried event shows off the best of our area’s painters, sculptors, print-makers, photographers and mixed media artisans.

In Sickness and in HealthFEBRUARY 16–APRIL 13Art, science and the human body: these themes link all of us, from prehistoric humans to modern designers seeking to push forward the envelope’s edge. This is a fascinating exhibit that looks at Illness, wellness and health through the eyes of the visual artist.

Drawing for ArtAPRIL 18–28Peruse a broad selection of fine art and crafts on display and join us for a drawing on April 28, where every ticketholder leaves with a work of art!

Creative Crafts Council 29th BiennialMAY 4–JUNE 15This Strathmore juried favorite returns with a crafty collection of work in a variety of media that’s guar-anteed to surprise and delight.

World on a StringJUNE 22–AUGUST 17The role of fine arts in the creation of puppets and marionettes; the art of the puppet show; and the effect of the puppetry on contemporary visual art—these are the themes this exhibit will string along.

Jennifer Koh, violin“Bach and Beyond”PART I NOVEMBER 14, 7:30PM, MANSIONPART II: FEBRUARY 28, 7:30PM, MANSIONWelcome Bach to Strathmore with “Bach and Beyond,” a series of violin recitals that bring Bach to the future. It’s the brainchild of the buzzed-about violinist Jennifer Koh, an exciting young artist known for her intensity as well as the beauty of her tone, an historical musical journey from the Six Sonatas through new and noteworthy works by contempo-rary composers.

Marian Anderson String QuartetTHURSDAY, APRIL 25, 7:30PM, MANSIONWhen they became the first African American ensemble in history to win a classical music competi-tion back in 1991, the members of what is now known as the Marian Anderson String Quartet sought the permission of the great contralto and civil rights pio-neer to use her name as their own. Their garb is tradi-tional, their playing is exceptional, and their mission to honor Miss Anderson’s legacy continues.
