EnvironmentalContext
Ourschooloffersoutstandingteachingandlearningprogramsinastimulatingenvironment.Weencourageourstudentstoworkco-operativelytobecomeconfidentandindependentlearners.
Theschoolwasestablishedin1961andisintheSouthWesternRegionoftheDepartmentofEducation.Itis10kmfromtheCBD,inawell-establishedresidentialareawhichisrichinsporting and service clubs. The schoolmainly takes enrolments from Strathmore and Pascoe Vale and a small number fromOak Park and Strathmore Heights. It has a definedNeighbourhoodZoneandanapprovedceilingof400enrolments.Duringthelast5yearstherehasseenasignificantdemandforenrolmentwiththeincreasedhousingdensity.ThenumberofEnglishasAdditionalLanguage(EAL) learnershasalsogrown.ThevastmajorityofourPrepstudentshaveattendedpreschoolandmostofourYear6studentsenrolatStrathmoreSecondaryCollege.
In 2015we have 16 straight classes, organised into 4 Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). These teamsmeetweekly to assess student learning and to plan engaging anddifferentiatedinstructiontomeettheneedsofallindividualstudents.In2015theschoolhasastaffingprofileof20.5teachers,4.68integrationaidesand2.16schoolsupportstaff.Theteachingteamsrepresentabalanceofexperiencedandbeginningteachers.Wearecommittedtothecontinualdevelopmentofourteacherswithongoingprofessionaldevelopmentprogramsincludingcoaching,mentoringandinduction.
StrathmoreNorthimplementsanexcitingcurriculumwhichisenhancedbyourtechnologynetworkandinnovativesoftware;includingtheuseofinteractivewhiteboards,laptops,AppleTVsandiPads. In2016wewillbeginaBringYourOwnDeviceprogramfor iPads inYears3and4.Theschoolplacesastrongemphasis inbothEnglishandMathswhichcontributessignificantlytowardsimprovedstudentlearningoutcomes.IndividualLearningPlansareimplementedforstudentswhoareperformingbeloworabovetheexpectedstandards.
Theschoolalsohasawell-establishedWelfareProgramtoaccommodateanumberofstudentswithadditionalneeds.OurinterventionandsupportprogramsincludeaLanguageSupportProgram,Lexia/Core5,BridgesandtheWiseOnesProgram(forgiftedstudents).Theschoolhasastrongcommitmenttowardsmaintainingahighstandardofdiscipline.Wehaveanestablishedculture wherestudents feelvalued andengaged,whilehavingmeaningfulopportunitiestocontribute totheschool.
SpecialistProgramsofferedincludePhysicalEducation,Japanese,PerformingandVisualArtsandLibrary.Theschoolhasastrongsportsprofile.WecurrentlyofferinterschoolSummerandWinterSports,Athletics,CrossCountry,SchoolHouseSports,P-2Swimming,andaPrepPerceptualMotorProgram.OurSoundhouseMusicProgramincludesKeyboard,Guitar,SingingandPerformanceinYear1-6andPrepInfantMusicProgram.WealsoofferaBiannualPerformingArtsConcertandVisualArtsShow.
Theschool iscommittedtoastrongeducational focus inpartnershipwiththestudentsandtheir families.This isachievedthroughclearandconsistentcommunication, threewayconferences,newsletters,Compassandanup todate informationwebsite.Weencourageaclimateofmutualgoodwill, trustandco-operation.Theschoolcommunity isactivelyinvolved in the lifeof theschoolandparticipation isvaluedandpromoted.This is reflected inourclassroomprograms,numerousschoolevents,parent forumsandoursixactiveSchoolCouncilSub-Committees:Education,BuildingsandGrounds,Finance,OutOfSchoolHoursCare,(YMCA)andFundraising.OurschoolhasadedicatedandsupportiveSchoolCouncilandweshareagoodrelationshipwithourbroaderschoolcommunity.OurparentshavehighexpectationsfortheirchildrenandourfamiliesareactivelyinvolvedinthewiderStrathmoreNorthCommunitythroughafterschoolandweekendsportsandactivities.
WetakeprideinourschoolgroundsandbuildingswhichincludeamodernflexiblelearningspaceknownasBBuilding.Itincludeseightclassroomsforsharedteaching.TheAWingaccommodatesanadministrationwingandfourclassrooms.WealsohavesixportableclassroomswhicharesituatedaroundourbeautifulMathsGarden.Inadditiontothesewehaveafreestandingrecentlyrenovatedartroom,libraryandgymnasium.Ourwell-developedplaygroundspaceisdividedintothreemainareas.FirstlytheartificialturfovalwiththeP-2playgroundandthesoftballpitch.OurbackareawiththePrepPlayTower,thequietgazeboarea,the3/4Playground,theMusicSchoolandCanteen.Thenfinallythefrontareawhichincludesanetballandbasketballcourt,battennisandvolleyballmarkingsandthe5/6Playground.Ourschoolfacilitiesareusedbyagrowingnumberofcommunitygroups;includingSoccer,YogaandNeighbourhoodWatch.
