The staff of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is made up of

Missourians who are committed to improving the quality of education in our state, providing access to excellent educators for every student, and helping schools provide the opportunity for each child to succeed in school and in life. Here are some of the ways DESE works each day on behalf of students, teachers, parents and communities:

¡ Oversees educational programs statewide

¡ Reviews and accredits school districts through the Missouri School Improvement Program

¡ Develops standards for educator practice

¡ Operates Missouri Schools for the Severely Disabled, School for the Blind and School for the Deaf

¡ Administers State Board of Education policies and regulations and state and federal laws

¡ Administers adult learning/rehabilitation services

¡ Works with business and industry partners to develop programs that prepare students to be college and career ready

¡ Advises districts on finance and governance

¡ Evaluates and monitors educator preparation programs

¡ Distributes and monitors state and federal funds to school districts and charter schools

¡ Administers the federal school breakfast, lunch and snack programs

K-12 AttendanceIn 2016-17, 88.7 percent of Missouri students were in attendance at least 90 percent of the time.

¡ Missouri public education served 918,637 students, grades PK-12.

¡ Missouri had 556 school districts and charter local education agencies (LEAs). The median district enrollment was 584 students, ranging from the largest district with 25,768 students to the smallest with 18 students.

¡ Missouri had 68,750 teachers in PK-12 classrooms.

¡ More than 22,844 students within the boundaries of the Kansas City and St. Louis City school districts attended 72 charter schools in 38 charter LEAs.

¡ Throughout the past five years, the proportion of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch has been 50 percent.

¡ During the 2016-17 school year, 95,960,005 school lunches were served. In Missouri, 63 percent of students eat a school lunch.

¡ Thirteen percent of students received special education services.

¡ For the 2016-17 school year, 12,045 school buses traveled 129,758,269 miles, transporting more than half a million school students a day. School buses keep more than 17 million cars off roads each year, and one school bus carries the equivalent of 36 cars.
