1. Teaching & Learning

We will develop a framework for teaching and learning that will increase student growth yearly.

2. Communications & Partnerships We will develop a communication plan that will strengthen our internal and external communications and maximize our community partnerships.

3. School Community Climate We will develop a plan that promotes an environment in which students and staff are safe, supported, empowered, and where respect for self and others is highly valued.

4. Facilities We will develop and implement a plan to maximize our current resources and provide facilities that reflect the needs of students, staff, and the community.

Goal #1 Teaching & Learning

We will develop a framework for teaching and learning that will increase student growth yearly

Specific Result and Action Steps 1. SEL will enhance curriculum and instruction by utilizing State and National Learning standards which are grounded in research,

and are implemented by best instructional practices 1.1 Identify research based instructional practices, between and among grade levels and subject areas. (Max Teaching, Formula Writing)

1.3 Create learning targets across the district to be used as a basis for monitoring.

1.4 Provide curriculum maps and pacing charts for staff members.

2. The SEL Schools will achieve annual increases in student growth through monitoring, responding, reporting/ sharing instructional data with all stakeholders.

2.1 SEL will utilize a combination of local, state, vendor, and national assessments to monitor growth on an annual and ongoing basis.

2.2 Adopt locally/vendor developed assessments for across grade levels and subject areas based on research based best practices. (Maps)

2.3 Adopt PARCC, End of Course Exams and other required assessments identified for specific grade levels as made available from the State.

2.4 SEL will utilize a common platform such as ThinkGate, STARS etc…to provide a method of monitoring and measuring ongoing student achievement in support of student growth.

2.5 SEL will provide the teaching staff with instructional supports necessary to measure, monitor and respond to instructional data. (Progress Monitoring)

2.6 Implement the tenants (TBT, BLT, DLT) of the Ohio Improvement Process to support continuous Improvement to review data at a district and building level – analysis of subgroups, outliers and respond with intervention.

3. SEL will engage with the broader community to develop shared ownership over the teaching and learning of our youngest citizens and future leaders.

3.1 SEL will share pertinent information with parents and community members regarding the annual outcomes of the District Report Card (ex…strengths, trends, plan to respond to data, demographics etc.). (See 4.7 of Communications Goal)

3.6 Explore, develop and formalize a protocol to share teaching and learning information regarding student growth.

Specific Result and Action Steps

4. SEL Schools will equip their students with 21st Century Skills and produce students that are career Ready/College prepared.

4.5 SEL will support the overall growth of students including their social, emotional and physical needs. (Provide social outlets to students-clubs, sports, community service and service learning opportunities; Provide emotional outlets to students-Aspirations, guidance services; Provide for physical needs of students-Health/Wellness activities)

4.7 Across all grade levels, we will share choices related to the world of work, to help students prepare and decide on an appropriate career path. (expand Senior Project) (Career Day)

5. Comprehensive Professional Development Plan

5.4 Provide PD opportunities research based best practices. (learning modules, webinars, teacher leaders, whole group, small group, academies etc…)

5.5 Explore options to create increased flexibility within the school calendar for improved and additional collaboration. (Staff Survey)

5.9 Continued Staff development identifying new uses for technology based on school need and staff preference. (Survey)

6. Increase the use of Technology for the purpose of teaching and learning

6.6 Complete a technology assessment – identify technology currently in place, who has access to what, where are the gaps, what are the needs/wants, what are the barriers to increasing access. (Veronica & Jen develop Curriculum areas)

Goal #2 Communications & Partnerships

We will develop a communication plan that will strengthen our internal and external communications and maximize our community partnerships

Specific Result and Action Steps1. The SEL Schools will enhance its brand, building pride, purpose and visual flare.

1.1 The SEL Schools will assess what the community wants from its school brand in a survey and various focus groups.

1.2 The SEL Schools will go through an extensive “branding” process whereby the potential for a new brand is presented to the school district based on community input.

1.3 The SEL Schools will be “Arcs” and have the same brown and gold colors at each of the school buildings in the district to promote unity.

1.5 The SEL Schools will create a revised and consistently used “tagline(s)” for the district.

1.7 The SEL Schools will develop a new mascot (competition, contract with Art Department).

1.9 The SEL Schools will enhance and promote its online school store to purchase “Arc-wear.”

1.12 The brand shall be on all district materials, including letterhead, PowerPoint templates, business cards, Web site, social media, etc.

1.13 The SEL Schools will create a style-guide for use of the SEL logo and colors.

1.14 The SEL Schools will re-adopt its logo or create a new logo based on its brand.

Specific Result and Action Steps2. The SEL Schools will enhance direct communications with the community.

2.1 The SEL Schools will conduct an informational survey with various items needed from the various action steps beginning in 2013.

2.2 The SEL Schools will distribute a regular official correspondence from the district to key communicators and host a special event annually for key communicators.

2.4 The SEL Schools will evaluate its Web traffic through Google Analytics and review other districts’ Web sites, FB™ and Twitter accounts and assess what it likes for future reference.

2.5 The SEL Schools will develop a new user-friendly Web site. (School Calendar)

2.8 The SEL Schools will promote newsworthy stories to the local print media on a regular basis.

2.9 The SEL Schools will promote newsworthy stories to the local TV media on a regular basis.

2.10 The SEL Schools will send a quarterly newsletter to every household in the district.

2.13 The SEL Schools will produce six informative television programs per year featuring the superintendent showcasing different aspects of the schools, and post them on AVTV, Web site and You Tube.

2.14 The SEL Schools will produce ten SEL In a Flash segments, for informative updates on the year and post on AVTV, Web site, scoreboard and You Tube.

2.18 The SEL Schools will create an email Contact the Superintendent option for visitors to the Web site.

2.19 The SEL Schools will provide the cities of the district with information on the district.

Specific Result and Action Steps3. The SEL Schools will create and maintain an active database of all stakeholders of the district and routinely update each of the

lists. 3.1 The SEL Schools will implement an online emergency card that will collect email addresses, phone numbers, text numbers and places of

employment for parents. 3.4 The SEL Schools will create a survey for Brush Seniors to include contact information.

3.6 The SEL Schools will maintain and promote a key communicators’ email list.

4. The SEL Schools will develop Communications Collateral to have “On Hand”.

4.6 The SEL Schools will create a “Where to Go to get SEL News” handout and incorporate into various community pieces.

4.7 The SEL Schools will develop a collateral-version of the state report card that breaks down why the SEL Schools earned the grade it did, on a regular basis. (3.1 T & L)

5. The district will create meaningful partnerships with various segments of community.

5.1 The SEL Schools will create an “Arc Business Partnership” whereby the SEL Schools formally engage the business community in South Euclid and Lyndhurst with 2 events per school year with one event at Brush and one at another building.

5.2 The SEL Schools will gauge the interest level of participating business for sponsorship opportunities within the school district, and athletic complex.

5.3 The SEL Schools will develop an advertising package that includes advertising on a new LED scoreboard, tables at “Arc Alley,” promotional activities during games, advertisements on electronic marquis, announcements, giveaways, etc.

5.7 The SEL Schools will partner with its police and fire departments in annual walk to school days with Police/Fire Departments and PBIS partnerships in the community.

5.8 The SEL Schools will invite business partners to be special guests at sporting events, plays, musicals to be recognized for their contributions to the schools.

5.10 The SEL Schools will section-off an area for businesses at home athletic contests.

Specific Result and Action Steps6. The SEL Schools will promote volunteerism among students and staff in the community.

6.1 Each building will develop an ambassador group of volunteer students and will identify one meaningful act of volunteerism in which it will participate during the year, which will be promoted to the community.

6.5 The Student Council president will make a presentation to the Board on a regular basis.

7. The SEL Schools will devise transitional communications efforts that prepare students for the next level of education within the district.

7.1 Each elementary school will invite members from Greenview to come and visit 3rd graders on a regular basis.

7.2 Each elementary school will send third graders to Greenview for an introductory visit.

7.3 Each Greenview 6th grader will visit Memorial Junior High for meaningful interaction on a regular basis.

7.4 Each Memorial Junior High 8th grader will visit Brush HS for meaningful interaction on a regular basis.

7.5 The SEL Schools will begin advertising the next school options to parents in the Fall.

7.6 The SEL Schools will help to better prepare orientation programs for parents. (Social Media for Parents, Cyber Bullying etc.)

Goal #2 Communications & Partnerships

We will develop a communication plan that will strengthen our internal and external communications and maximize our community partnerships

 

8. An internal communications plan will be developed.

8.1 An internal email correspondence from the building administration to the teachers and staff will be maintained on a regular basis.

8.2 A protocol for communicating “good news” about students, teachers and buildings will be developed and clearly communicated to each staff member.

8.7 The SEL Schools will introduce and welcome new staff members at staff meetings throughout the year.

9. The district will develop an ongoing mode of monitoring the communications plan.

9.1 A communications audit will take place 1x/year with members of the strategic planning committee and a representative from each stakeholder group, including each school and union.

9.2 The SEL Schools will evaluate our own Web site on a regular basis to ensure that it is current and functional.

9.3 Google Analytics will be used to analyze various sections of the Web site.

9.4 During one dedicated board meeting each year, there will be a report updating the community on its progress on the communications plan.

Goal #3 School Community Climate

We will develop a plan that promotes an environment in which students and staff are safe, supported, empowered, and where respect for self and others is highly valued

Specific Result and Action Steps1. The SE-L school community will have an increased awareness of the value of diversity.

1.1 Initiate and facilitate open and honest conversations about race, subcultures and subgroups.

1.4 Utilize Aspirations tools (e.g. surveys, activities) to their fullest potential.

2. The SE-L school community will be safe and nurturing.

2.1 Provide Crisis Prevention and Intervention training to all staff. (Brush Year 1)

2.2 Promote social and emotional well-being in students.

2.3 Provide training to staff to identify students with emotional instabilities and/or violent tendencies.

2.5 Provide staff with an annual orientation to safety policies and procedures.

3. The SE-L school community will be positive and welcoming.

3.2 Formally recognize and introduce new students at the building level.

3.4 Formally recognize and introduce new staff at the district level.

3.5 Promote mutual respect between and among staff and students.

Specific Result and Action Steps4. The SE-L school community will promote appropriate student behavior and discipline.

4.1 Reinforce positive student behavior.

4.2 Refine implementation of district-wide PBIS model.

4.3 Identify, monitor and support students with histories of unacceptable behavior.

4.7 Eliminate zero credit policy for out of school suspension.

4.11 Use Public School Works discipline software district wide.

5. Research need for Student Reflection Room in all buildings (ex. Lunch/recess; time out area)

5.1 Utilize Discipline Student Data to determine need for Student Refection Room

6. The SE-L school community will actively support all students, staff and partners.

6.1 Provide opportunities for parents to be actively engaged with their child’s education.

Goal #4 Facilities

We will develop and implement a plan to maximize our current resources and provide facilities that reflect the needs of students, staff and the community

Specific Result and Action Steps1. Upgrade athletic facilities and grounds to accommodate the needs of the athletic teams and physical education classes.

1.A Expansion of Korb Field amenities to accommodate the needs of Athletic teams.

1.A.1 Look at previous plans for redoing the old locker rooms in East Gym to see if it meets all the needs of PE

1.A.2 Investigate using A105 as temporary locker room facility

1.A.3 Find out if old locker room has enough space to accommodate PE and Athletics

1.A.4 Research the worth of building a locker facility onto East Gym

1.A.5 Revisit Phase II of Korb Field plans to determine if it still meets our needs.

1.A.6 Visit other schools in our Athletic Conference to see the facilities they have at their Football Field.

1.A.7 Find out if there are ways to alter our current facilities to meet the needs of a locker room.

1.B Have a state of the art weight room.

1.B.1 Revisit the 2012 plans that were drawn up to see if the cost is still the same as well as meets the needs of the school.

1.B.2 Visit other schools in our Athletic Conference to compare our weight room facility to theirs.

1.B.3 Explore alternate location for weight room. Is there room near Korb Field?

1.B.5 Solicit corporate sponsorship for the weight room.

4.A Mounted Interactive White Boards in 100% of classrooms.

4.A.1 Establish a baseline: Verify which rooms already have mounted Interactive White Boards (approx. 100) and which do not (approx. 200).

4.A.3 Survey teachers to determine their level of interest in using Interactive White Board technology to enhance student learning.

4.B Dedicated Science Lab in each of the K-3 buildings.

4.B.1 Designate a space with input from staff and administration. (Survey types of rooms and how we will utilize rooms)

4.C Improved Interior/Exterior finishes of buildings (Visible surfaces)

4.D Improved Mechanical Systems of Buildings.

4.E Improved Safety & Security of Buildings.

4.E.1 Update and enhance access control in all occupied district buildings.

Specific Result and Action Steps5. Look for creative ways to generate income or save expenses related to buildings and grounds.

5.A Create a fee schedule for usage.

5.A.1 Determine rates based on surrounding school district rates.

5.A.2 Categorize rates as school use or non-school use, community or non-community use, school use or non-school use.

5.B A cost savings through an energy conservation program.

5.B.1 Obtain current cost and usage by building for each type of utility for the past three years.

5.B.2 Use existing district resources or hire outside consultant to educate staff on conservation of energy.
