2013 has brought more moisture than 2012, better grass and a good hay crop - and we hope this isthe case for all of you. 2012’s drought stressed the cattle, lowered weaning weights and generallyimpacted them negatively in every way from spring 2012 through the 2012-13 winter. These times givetestimony to the value of efficient, easy fleshing cattle who can adapt to harsh conditions.

Our 2013 sale offering are this sort and we hope they’ll fill your needs. Although the sale offering ofboth breeds got a the poor start due to our dryness, they’ve developed well. Angus Angus We’ve bred a strain of Angus cattle suitable for our environment of harsh winters

and high altitude. Producing three-dimensional, thick Angus has been our goal aswell. To this end, we’ve line-bred our herd with known low PAP (Pulmonary ArterialPressure) genetics and emphasized maternal traits, calving ease, easy fleshing ability,feed efficiency, muscle and structural correctness. This year’s Angus long yearling salebulls are very consistent in phenotype and low PAP scores. (There are/were none over 42.)

The down side of having a closed herd is that the cattle’s performance figures(EPDs) become flat and don’t reflect their ability to perform. The animals’ consistencyimpacts their figures as well because EPDs are designed to reflect differences amongcontemporaries. On the positive side, customers will enjoy significant hybrid vigor fromthese line-bred genetics.

The cattle will profile well and have substance from behind. We’ve down sizedthe cow herd and made tbem stouter with increased capacity and extended longevity.They travel on good feet, are fertile and have good udders. We're happy to say that,they match our Herefords in terms of overall phenotype and muscle.

Hereford Hereford The demand for the right kind of Hereford cattle has never been greater

and 2013 marks Strang Herefords 51st year in business. In 1962, Bart startedwith ten registered Hereford first calf heifers. He bred a productive cow herdand kept pace with the breed’s genetic improvements. We reap the benefit ofhis life’s work.

Our goal is to meet the commercial producers’ needs with consistent,predictable bulls who have a balance of economically important traits.Fertility continues to be primary; and today’s outcross genetics are deliveringhigh performing bulls from these foundation cows with smaller birth weights,increased maternal and improved carcass traits. Cattlemen can use StrangHereford bulls with confidence and not have to worry about oversized calveswith undesirable dimension. We’re pleased to report that 75% of our 2013Hereford sale bulls are in the top 25th percentile of the breed for Marbling - orbetter. 39% are in the 10th percentile and 10% in the 5th or above for thisimportant trait.

We continue to emphasize the importance of structural correctness,muscle, good udders with small teats, milking and easy fleshing ability, as wellas eye pigment. Our balanced bulls go into Hereford-Angus baldy programs

881 was the high selling bull in our 1999 sale to Upstream Ranch, Taylor, NE, where hewas a top maternal sire. He’s the maternal grand sire of UPS Domino 3027 & ranks inthe top 1% of the breed for Milk, top 5% for M&G & top 5% for Marbling

3027 is a trait leader combining exceptional calving ease with solid growth & out-standing carcass data. He shows the influence of his maternal grand sire, SHDiamond 881 - Ref Sire 6) phenotypically and in his progeny.

164D gave us fertility, muscle, milk (top 2.5% if the breed), easing fleshing ability& pigment. His genetics are consistent and proven. Our linebred cow herd is his

legacy and have crossed very successfully with all of our outcross herd sires.

105Y is a muscular bull who travels on hard feet and is very easy fleshing. He’s aflush mate to last year’s high selling bull to Mike Fuchs, Del Norte, CO. He is the

service sire for many private treaty heifers

739T is a calving ease bull with muscle & very low PAP. He has a big top & as a year-ling, his REA measured 13.33”. His get are thick, correct, high performing individuals

Eyes, R & L: The Hereford cattle have been scored for eye pigment on each eye: 1= no pigment; 2= light pigment; 3 = significantpigment; 4 = fully pigmented around eye; 5 = full circle of pigment or goggle eye.

BW and Calving Ease Scores: The actual birth weight is recorded for each sale animal. All deliveries were unassisted, except forbackwards calves unless specifically noted by comment. Therefore, there are no calving ease scores listed.

Adjusted Weaning Weight: Weaning weights have been adjusted to 205 days of age. REA & IMF Ratio: Comparison of REA and IMF scores within contemporaries. Actual scores are factored into EPDsBreeding Soundness and Pelvic Data: All of the coming 2 year old bulls have passed a complete breeding soundness exam based

on scrotal circumference, morphology (evaluation of the amount of sperm abnormalities) and sperm motility. Dr. Paul Neilson,DVM, Meeker, CO, does the testing. Scrotal measurements and scrotal ratios (the comparison of the individual's measurementand the respective breed average for each bull's age) will be provided on sale day. Pelvic measurements are available, also. Testiclesize is very heritable and has a direct correlation to early puberty in half sisters and daughters. Fertility is the foundation of allbreeding programs.

CHB, SOD, DOD, DLF, IEF, HYF in Hereford pedigrees:CHB - A sire earns this designation through carcass data indicating their get fit the grid for the Certified Hereford Beef program;

SOD- Sire Of Distinction; DOD - Dam Of Distinction; DLF - Diluter Free; IEF- Ideopathic Epilepsy Free; HYF- Hypotrichosis Free.

Herd bulls used at the time or after a genetic defect is identified have been tested. There are no known genetic defects in our herds.

Birth Weight (BW) EPD (in terms of the example given in charts #1 & #2)means that progeny fromboth subject animals can be expected to be 2 pounds more at birth than the progeny from an ani-mal with an EPD of 0.0 pounds.

Weaning Weight (WW) EPD reflects progeny growth through 205 days of age. The weaning EPD ofboth animals indicates that their calves would be expected to be 25 pounds heavier at 205 daysof age than calves of an animal with a Weaning Weight EPDof +10.0 pounds.

Yearling Weight (YW) EPD reflects progeny growth differences through 365 days of age. The YearlingWeight EPD of both animals +60 means that their calves would be expected to be 15 pounds heav-ier than the progeny from an animal with a Yearling Wt. EPD of +45 pounds.

Maternal EPDs:Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) EPD indicates how easily a sire’s daughters will calve at two yearsof age when compared to daughters of other sires.Milk EPD (M&G EPD = Milk & Growth for Hereford cattle). The Milk figure reflects the weaningweight potential due to milk production (expressed in pounds of calf weaned) of an animal's daugh-ters. For the Hereford cattle "M&G" is the Milk figure plus the growth potential passed on to thecalves through an animal's daughters. The "M&G" is a formula: 1/2 Wean Wt. EPD + Milk EPD.

Carcass EPDs:Fat EPD reflects the differences in adjusted 365-day twelfth-rib fat thickness. Bulls with lower thefigures(&minus) are expected to produce leaner progeny than those with higher fat figures.REA EPD shows the differences in adjustsed 365-day ribeye area measurements. Relatively high-er figures = better muscled and higher yielding carcasses.Marbling EPD shows differences in adjustsed 365-day intramuscular fat (IMF) - an indicator ofhigher/lower quality grade and an important trait.

EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences)EPDs are useful tools for evaluating cattle, but are impacted by management practices and environment. The cattle are available for inspection at all times prior to the sale.Terms: The terms of sale are cash unless arrangements have been made prior to the sale. Each animal will

sell to the highest bidder and the auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids. Announcements, as madefrom the auction block, take precedence over printed matter.

Health: Colorado is a T.B. and Brucellosis free state. All animals will be sold according to the health regula-tions of the state of Colorado; interstate health certificates will be furnished, and additonal tests, such asthose for trich, will be completed after the sale to meet the health requirements of other states. All bullsone year of age and older have passed a complete breeding soundness exam prior to the sale, have beentested for PI. and treated for parasites.

Guarantee:We stand behind these cattle and, unless otherwise stated at the sale, all animals are without knowndefects. Attention will be called to any known defects at time of sale. We guarantee all bulls for breedingsoundness for one year from time of purchase. Should there be a problem, we reserve the right to test theanimal for a reasonable length of time at our expense. In case an adjustment is required, it will be madewith a replacement animal of equal value or credit on the purchase of another animal in our next sale lessthe original animal’s salvage value.

Wintering, and Insurance. All animals are at buyer's risk as soon as bid off. Insurance will be availablesale day and we recommend you insure your purchase. Delivery: We will cooperate on all deliveries. Due to the high price of fuel, we’ll deliver free to a centralpoint within a 200 mile radius of Meeker and will do our best to accomodate each buyers’ circumstances.
