Teaming up withOptua in Stowmarket

Exciting new social activities for young disabledpeople will be running in Stowmarket this winter.

The ‘Teaming Up’ sessions are being run by disabil-ity charity Optua on Tuesday evenings from 14thDecember until 8th March. The sessions are havebeen funded by the county council’s ActivitiesUnlimited service and aim to give young peoplewith disabilities or additional needs the opportunityto gain more independence, confidence, selfesteem and vital social skills, whilst taking part ineveryday fun leisure activities.

The sessions will include activities such as going tothe cinema, sports sessions, playing snooker, going out for a meal or a drink and whateverthose taking part want to do.

Karl Daniels, Optua’s Teaming Up Co-ordinator, said: “Teaming Up can help young people to get out more, make some new friends and becomemore confident about accessing leisure facilities in their community.. The project enables us to expand our leisure services to younger disabledpeople across the county and we’re engaging with lots of new people and encouraging them to get out and about. Hopefully give lots of parentsand carers will also get a much needed respite break while the young people theylook after are out having fun with us!”

Kevin Filby, Project Manager for Activities Unlimited, said: “The idea behind Teaming Upin Suffolk came from the young people themselves. They told Activities Unlimited thatthey wanted to be able to go out with their friends in the community, but neededsome support to make it happen. We asked Optua if they could help, and Teaming Upis the result! We hope that as many young people as possible will take up these excit-ing new opportunities.”

It is always a time for fun and happiness and ofcourse the new year change, a time to do thingsdifferently, and hopefully, better than before. TheNew Year will bring a lot of new changes for theStowmarket Flyer and i hope you like them. We'vegrown over the last 12 editions and I'm sure ifyou look back you will see the changes.

This month is my FIRST month of actually put-ting the layout of the magazine together, and

I've learnt a lot in the process. We have moved to a 3-column layout,it allows (I think) for a better read and it has the added benefit ofgetting more on a page. The magazine has also gone FULL COLOUR,this will allow for the inclusion of more pictures and logos with oureditorials.

It just leaves me to say a big thank you to all of our supporters. All ofthe team at the Flyer wish you a very merry Christmas and a fantas-tic New Year.

I would first like to wish all our members and supporters a healthy andhappy new year and look forward to seeing them again at our 2011meetings.

Our January meeting sees the welcome return of Peter Down giving anillustrated talk on ‘The Eventful Voyage of HMS Arlanza’. Arlanza was an‘Armed Merchant Cruiser’, (merchant ship requisitioned by the RoyalNavy), enforcing the blockade of Germany in 1915. Detached to takea high level diplomatic mission to Russia and return, it struck a mine inthe Barents Sea and was towed stern-first into a small port in FinnishLapland where it was frozen in and virtually written off by the Royal Navy. This is the story of that journey and how she was returned to the block-ade more than a year later through the efforts of her crew, the RussianNavy, plus stores and artisans begged from passing RN ships. Basis forthe story is a log written by the then Yeoman of Signals on Arlanza andresearch by Peter. The meeting will take place at 2.30 pm on Saturday29th January in the Munton and Fison Room, Stowmarket CommunityCentre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, where there is ample free parking.

To defray costs, donations of £3.00 from non-members would be appre-ciated.

In February ‘Around the World in 100 Days’ is the title of an illustrated talkby our Chairman, Gary Gascoyne.

The Christmas lights ofStowmarket were turned on at

6:30 with crowds of people bravingthe arctic weathers to see them.

It's always a family event but with many stallsaround, and shops staying open untill 8pm to

cope with all the extra people in the town, manypeople were taking the chance to purchase

sledges for the snowy few days ahead. I myself took

the chance to purchase some chocolate cakes fromthe Girl Guides stall, pictured below.

James Redmond opened the event with top localmusic acts performing throughout the night. Theseincluded the superb 60-strong Ipswich CommunityGospel Choir, the duo of Dumbfoundus, the greatStowmarket Concert Band and the excellent localsinger songwriter Dave Collins.

As always Bury Street looking like a little winter wonder-land, with its twinkling icicle lights, which and i may bemistaken, run all they way to the Stag Tavern this year, much further than last year.

You may remember last year we included the BuryStreet lights as our front page cover but we didnthave the luxury of the crisp white snow of this year.Noble & White have given us such a fantastic windowdisplay this year we had to use it as our front coverpicture. The owner, Isabel Wilton said they put a lot ofeffort into their shop window, and even more so atChristmas. They won the best window competion lastyear and as such were not allowed to enter again thisyear, so watch out all you other shopowners in Stowmarket as I'm sure theywill try twice as hard year next year!!

All in all the evening was a great success and fun was had by all. Fromthe street lights the the shop windowsand of course the Tree, we should allbe very pleased with our display and i hope you all get a chance to visitthe town and see it for yourselves.

They’ve had theirfair share of break-ups over the years,as well as a num-ber of criticallyacclaimed albumsand singles – andthey have just com-pleted a UK tourincluding a night inNorwich at the UEA.Now, Glenn Tilbrookand Chris Difford of

rock band SQUEEZE are back together again toclaim what is rightfully their own. Speaking toTown 102’s Paul Morris, Glenn and Chris talkmusic, the Minimoog… and milk!

It’s almost hard to believe that Squeeze havebeen going over 35 years – how have you bothbeen getting away with it for so long!?

Glenn Tilbrook: I think that, for one, we're verydetermined... two, we have regular breaks...and three, we sound really good when we allplay together! We've gone through lots of differ-ent Squeeze line-ups, but this one we have nowis really on fire - it's really gelling, pushing out, breaking down all the barriers, as you mightsay in a rock ‘n roll way!

Since starting out in the late 70s, you've had a

few gaps in-between but now you've got thisgreat line up, do you plan to just keep ongoing?

Chris Difford: That's what do - we play musicand we enjoy it!

Let's talk about the new album 'Spot TheDifference' – it’s out now, and I think it's a reallygreat idea for a new record – explain whatyou’ve done…

CD: We've re-recorded 14 of our hits, mainly togain ownership of them. We signed a recorddeal when we were younger, to Universal, andthey own the rights to all the original record-ings. Now, we’ve decided to re-record them sowe could have our fair share of what truly isours!

There have been a few instances over the yearswhere your songs have been used in TV ads –without much of a say-so from you?

CD: Absolutely, on television commercials inAmerica in particular. We've never had theopportunity to question, bargain or have a say -so this gives us the chance to have a say. It'spurely recorded for that reason. [It’s given] us abit of breathing space before we go andrecord a new album next year.

How do you feel about being the band that gotkids to drink milk?

CD: well, there you go! I thought they had milktaken away from them? I thought they drankCoca Cola now!

There have been a couple of gaps in Squeeze'shistory - you officially broke up in 1999 but youboth continued to record as soloists - was itquite liberating going off to do your own thing?

GT: yes, it was, but I think the great thing aboutbeing back together now is that we've bothlearnt a lot in the intervening years. The timebefore Squeeze split up [in the 80s], Chris and Istayed together so, effectively, we were togeth-er from the beginning until 1998. The few yearsapart we had really enabled us to see for eachother what we could do separately and tend toour own gardens, as it were... we both puttingin a lot of work in different ways, but I thinkwe've brought a lot back to the table to share. That gives us more strength - both of us willcontinue with our solo stuff, we're happy withthose things, and we're both happy to be backin Squeeze!

There are plenty of famous names who've gotSqueeze on their 'influenced' list - Lily Allen, MarkRonson, The Feeling - is it nice to be recognisedin that way?

GT: a lot of our stuff has come around againfor people, and they're discovering it andthey're saying it's fresh for them. We did a tourin the summer in America and there were a lotof kids coming to the shows, and we've not hadthat for a while - that says to me they're goingout to discover stuff for themselves, and com-ing to see the band. The reaction we got whenwere playing in the summer was amazing, andwe've not had that since we started. It wasincredible!

Squeeze ‘Spot The Difference’ isout now to buy, with a new

album to follow later in 2011.

So, no film review this monthdue to the fact I have had tohave my wisdom teeth out Idid not get round to seeingHarry Potter on the Openingweekend to get a review to youall in time. (Not the best timingIpswich Hospital considering Ihave been looking forward toDeathly Hallows for ages now butgrateful to be getting rid of theteeth as they have been painful)

Instead of a review I am going totell you about the films which I‘mlooking forward to seeing in theforthcoming months (some of thechoices may surprise)

Megamind (PG) – WillFerrell, Johan Hill and

Brad Pitt.

Yes I have just said I am looking for-ward to a Will Ferrell Film! As much asI don’t like Ferrell as an actor I lovemy animation films and I have beenlooking forward to this one since I firstsaw a trailer for it. Ferrell voicesSupervillian, Super Intelligent AlienMegamind who was shot into space

by his family when he was only 8 daysold. From the same planet anotherfamily launch their own son whobecomes known as Metro Man voicedby Brad Pitt. He and Megamindbecome arch rivals, but things don’t goquite as planned for the Supervillian!

Tron Legacy (U) – Jeff Bridges,Garrett Hedlund and Oliva

Wilde.

Sam Flynn played by Garrett Hedlund is haunt-ed by the disappearance of his father playedby Oscar winning Jeff Bridges. Sam goes toinvestigate signals sent from the arcade whichwas once owned by his father and here he ispulled into an alternative world, where hemeets Quorra played by Oliva Wilde and fromhere on you are watching a father and son’slife or death journey.

Love and Other Drugs - (15) -Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne

Hathaway

Anne Hathaway plays Maggie a free spirit whois not looking to settle down any time soon.Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jamie, the Male versionof Maggie. They meet, they fall in love, buttheir love takes them by surprise and the storyhere unfolds.

Yes this movie will ultimately be your typicallove story but for me Jake Gyllenhaal andAnne Hathaway are two of the finest actors ofmy generation and I am not ashamed to say Ican’t wait for this one.

Black Swan (TBC) - NataliePortman and Mila Kunis

The moment i saw the trailer for this film nearon 2 months ago i got excited straight away.Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis play ballet

dancers in a New York Cityproduction of Swan Lake.Portman who plays Nina ischosen as the PrimaBallerina who will play theinnocent White Swan and Lilyplayed by Kunis to play theSensual Black Swan.

This psychological thriller looksset to become one of the bigfilms of 2011 and to top the bignames it is directed by DarrenAronofsky best known forRequiem for a Dream and TheWrestler. The film opened the 67thVenice Film Festival in September2010.

So this is the last ‘review’ so tospeak for 2010. I hope you haveenjoyed reading my little ramblingsabout the films that have been outthis year

As for my film of 2010…… i think iteasily has to be Toy Story 3. Sucha good sequel and so well written.Disney never lets you down with afilm. I came out of Toy Story 3feeling happy and content withwhat Disney had done with thecharacters and for that reason imake it my film of the year. As isaid in my review, very rarely doyou come out of a sequel with sucha good feeling.
