Hello, my name is Deborah Clarke, and I run the Arts at

Stowe programme. After their very successful summer school last year, we are particularly delighted and privileged to welcome The Florence Academy back to Stowe. Their courses offer a unique opportunity to study classic techniques in the UK with a Florence Academy tutor.

In addition, we offer you the opportunity to develop your own contemporary style, exploring different media and

techniques with artist Gino Ballantyne.

In our Digital Landscape courses there is an opportunity to learn how to use iPad technology to explore Stowe with a digital eye. Supported by artists at the cutting edge, you will have the opportunity to use film, music and animation to create new art forms.

You may want to learn new skills in different art forms. We have a range of courses in etching, printmaking, textiles, watercolour painting, jewellery making and

willow sculptures, all held in the beautiful grounds of Stowe.

To celebrate this Summer of Artists in Residence, we will hold a special exhibition event where participants can choose to exhibit their work or simply come and see the work of others.

If you are a beginner or an artist looking to develop your skills and techniques, we are sure you will find something in our programme to interest you.

The Florence Academy comes to Stowe offering a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of nature

under the tutelage of the Academy’s Ambassador, Toby Wright. The courses are designed for those who are seeking to develop a traditional classical approach to drawing and painting, and working from nature. These principles are at the core of both the work and the instruction of master tutor Toby Wright. Having studied at The Florence Academy, Toby was a principal instructor in the Advanced Painting programme until 2010. His paintings can be found in galleries and private collections across Europe and America.

Landscape Painting en Plein Air: study of architecture/buildings in the landscapeMONDAY 28 JULY - FRIDAY 1 AUGUST OR MONDAY 4 - FRIDAY 8 AUGUST

For this five day course, students spend morning and afternoon sessions studying the art of

landscape painting as well as how to include architectural elements in their compositions. Demonstrations will help students learn the concept of perspective to help convey the structure of buildings. Students can choose between the exploration of landscape painting and the play of light on architecture or fusing the two disciplines.

During the five day course, students spend half the day portrait painting and half the day

drawing from the life models in The Queen’s Temple at Stowe. At the Florence Academy of Art, skill in drawing is considered fundamental to the practice and perfection in painting or sculpture. This course is designed to strengthen the student’s perception and accuracy of three-dimensional form. With step-by-step guidance, we confront one of the greatest challenges; the human figure. This course is a great way to strengthen one’s observational skills, so as to apply them later to your own personal work, regardless of subject matter. From blocking in the figure to developing structure through the observation of key anatomical landmarks, designing light and shadow shapes, and modelling form to create a believable figure.

This intensive course concentrates on comprehensively understanding how to structure a figure drawing, alternating with the practice of studying the portrait in paint. Both disciplines are mutually complimentary and require attention to anatomy, shape design, light and shadow, and reacting to a life model.

Learn about and practise two types of printmaking, using the beautiful Stowe grounds as inspiration

for your work. The course will be led by Amanda Jorgensen, an experienced teacher and artist, whose specialism is printmaking. Amanda trained at Brighton University under Brendan Neiland, followed by an MA at Chelsea College of Art alongside Chris Ofili and Peter Doig.

The first two days will focus on using etching to explore intaglio printmaking methods. You will draw directly onto your zinc plate to develop and practise your mark-making techniques. Using hard and soft ground you will discover a range of textures and surfaces. You will look at the work of Rembrandt, Morandi and Picasso to discover how they used the medium, and employ their techniques in your own work. Back in the studio you will use nitric acid to create the etched surface and then explore printing techniques on a range of beautiful printmaking papers.

During the third day you will make relief prints using our Albion Press. You will make crisp prints that further develop your mark-making skills. You will be able to combine colour, collage and layers to create a rich surface.
