Stour Print Carentan Young Bird & Old Hens Race Probable 1 st Open 1 st SE Section Vic Morgan of Portsmouth with “Super Ken” Birdage for our young bird and old hens race was better than expected with so many fanciers struggling this year with young bird sickness and young bird losses. The Carentan young bird race saw 198 members sending 1832 birds and old hens 83 members sending 395 birds. It’s been a foregone conclusion this year that once the weekend arrives so does the bad weather. Even though the winds have finally changed round to South Westerly the rain is still there. Keith and Roy spoke together and decided to liberate the birds at 10.30am in to a brisk South West wind after waiting for conditions to improve here. The weather in France and across the channel was very good and the rain on the coast was sweeping east very fast. The forecast for the next few days in France and here was not good so with a break in the weather they decided to liberate. I would like to thank all the markers and helpers at Frome and Salisbury for this season and hope they will be available for 2011. Thanks also to Robbie and Louise Jones, Martin and Bill Norman for the collection and delivery of crates to Salisbury. Our young fanciers trophy and £200 prize money kindly donated by the Classic’s Patron Tony Carter for the best average from old bird Messac 1 and young bird Carentan has been won by George Tribble and Tony Male of Portsmouth. Well done to this two lads and look out for them in the very near future. Probable 1 st & 4 th Open 1 st SE Section. Vic Morgan of Portsmouth. Vic was well up in the Classic’s 2009 Guernsey Young Bird race taking 4 th & 5 th Open but has topped that this year taking 1 st & 4 th Open. The winning pigeon a blue pied cock “Super Ken” named after Vic’s brother who sadly passed away has the same Sire and Dam as his 4 th Open winner last season. “Super Ken” is a Koen Minderhoed Gaby Vandenabeele bred out of stock from Peter Reeves “Hazelwood Lofts”. The Sire being a Grandson of “Super Gaby” and the Dam a Grandaughter of “Senna 536”. Vic’s 2 nd arrival a blue chequer cock clocked at 12.30.13 to take probable 4 th Open is from a new strain of Braakhuis long distance birds Vic has brought in. Obviously doing the right job already.

Well done to this two lads and look out for them in the very near future. Probable 1st & 4th Open 1st SE Section. Vic Morgan of Portsmouth. Vic was well up in the Classic’s 2009 Guernsey Young Bird race taking 4th & 5th Open but has topped that this year taking 1st & 4th Open. The winning pigeon a blue pied cock “Super Ken” named after Vic’s brother who sadly passed away has the same Sire and Dam as his 4th Open winner last season. “Super Ken” is a Koen Minderhoed Gaby Vandenabeele bred out of stock from Peter Reeves “Hazelwood Lofts”. The Sire being a Grandson of “Super Gaby” and the Dam a Grandaughter of “Senna 536”. Vic’s 2nd arrival a blue chequer cock clocked at 12.30.13 to take probable 4th Open is from a new strain of Braakhuis long distance birds Vic has brought in. Obviously doing the right job already.

Only 12 pairs of old birds are kept and this year 26 young birds. All birds are raced naturally. Feeding consists of Vic’ s own mix made up from tic beans, maple peas and tares with 50% barley added on return from races for a couple of days and maize and a few peanuts added 2 days prior to the race. Vic would like to thank all his Club members for persuading him to carry on racing as his health hasn’ t been too good over the last few years. Also Micky Angwin of Cornwall for all their chats and he would like to say well done to George Tribble and Tony Male who are turning in to successful pigeon fanciers at a young age.

Vic Morgan. Probable 2nd Open 2nd SE Section. Pete Abrook of Cowes, IOW. Pete’ s 2nd Open winner clocked at 12.12.17 is a Grizzle cock bred down from Pete’ s Bricoux Sire and the Dam being a gift pigeon from Anne Pitkeathly. The bird was on the darkness system and its previous races with the Solent Federation has seen it being the first bird in the loft taking 53rd Fed from Honiton. Pete has won the Classic’ s 2nd young bird race from Guernsey back in 2000 and has also been 2nd before. Living on the Isle of Wight and trying to race and train pigeons is not an easy task, well done to you Pete.

Pete Abrook. Probable 3rd Open 1st NE Section. Eamon Kelly (Lloyd & Kelly) of Steventon. I timed a medium sized mealy hen a Heremans Ceusters bred at Premier stud and was purchased in early February ’10. She is off a pair of Belgium bred yearlings and is the very first bird ever bred from them. The Sire is “ Cola” a super mealy cock bred by Marina Van de Velde a Grandson of the great “ Toursman” . The Dam is “ Delia” a lovely blue hen bred from a brother of the world famous “ Euro” when paired to a daughter of “ Wonderaske” . This season she had 2 races with the BB&O from Wincanton and Seaton followed by training 3 times per week from the South Coast and Isle of Wight. This year the young birds have been fed Gerryplus and Redband. If she seems in good order, she will go to the Carentan National. I would like to say 'Well Done' to Mr Morgan from Portsmouth on a great performance and to Clare and all the officials for all their hard work they do throughout the season. “ Premier Lass” was purchased at Premier stud which in my opinion is the best stud set-up in the world and whenever visited, you’ re always made to feel welcome. Thanks to Graham and Derek who this year picked out the pigeons I purchased. (Eamon is an unsung hero in the Classic. I would like to thank him for all his help)

Eamon Kelly. Probable 5th Open. Ken & Sue Francis of Southampton. Firstly, we would like to congratulate the winner of the race; it wasn’ t easy so “ well done” . Our pigeon is a blue pied cock who is a real character about the loft and is known as ‘Soapy’ due to his distinctive white beak. He was racing to the perch, and has not been on the darkness system. He is a Fountainhead Janssen, bred down from stock purchased from the late Eddie Wright. This family is now the only one kept and has been successful for us since its introduction back in 1995. Prior to going to Carentan he was trained and raced on the North Road, where he came well, having had two races prior to the Classic.

Ken Francis. Proable 6th Open. George Tribble & Tony Male of Portsmouth. The pigeon that arrived from the Classic was bred down from gift pigeons from Jason Ross and Ritchie Thomas. The Dam of the youngster bred from Jason Ross is a Andre Clemen breed and the Sire of the youngster from Ritchie Thomas is a Soontjen Frank Sheader x Wall, Lunt and Green Janssen. Our young birds are trained 10-15 times before the season, once racing the young birds are let out of an open loft all week, maybe with a training toss mid week. We feed our young birds on Gems young bird mix and Vitamin drops twice weekly in their water. We have been racing pigeons now for eight years with the help from out Grandad Chris Willett and Uncle, Daniel Willett who also race pigeons in the same club as us.

George Tribble & Tony Male. Probable 2nd NE Section. Gordon Seeney of Harwell. Gordon timed a Bellengie Delbar x Brian Clayburn Soontjen little blue chequer hen flying to the perch at 13.37.49 to take 2nd NE Section 13th Open followed within 22 minutes by another 3 birds to take probable 22nd, 23rd and 44th Open. This hen was not planned to go to this race, the team Gordon had wanted to send went to Guernsey with the Solent Federation last weekend, but unfortunately they were held over for three days and then had to face a stiff North wind so he rested them. Gordon had 6 pigeons home on the day out of the 10 sent and 3 were waiting on the loft the next morning.

Pictured with Gordon is Grandson Chris who hopes to have his own team of pigeons next year.

Gordon Seeney and Grandson Chris. Probable 1st NW Section. Bill Morris of Elmore. My NW Section winner is a Blue cock hatched in late March. Although my youngsters who are on natural have not raced at all well at club level, this bird in 3 races has always been 1st or 2nd to the loft. His Sire is a cock bred by Alan White of Tyne & Wear whose Dam was 4th open Bourges UNC and the Dam bred by Chris Gordon is a full grand daughter of “ Syndale Treble” and contains all of Chris's old lines. The bird arrived in a bout of heavy rain and I almost missed him as I was sheltering under fir trees. As with all good early pigeons, despite the rain, he looked well as though he hadn't left the loft. All my youngsters are reared on Breed and Wean and changed over to Irish mix prior to racing. My old birds won the Gloucestershire combined averages trophy and now the young birds step in and win the Section, despite me.

Bill Morris. Probable 2nd NW Section. John Rodway of Worcester. The pigeon is a small blue chequer hen, bred in April, and is on the Natural System racing to the perch. All birds live together, both young and old. Young bird racing, when I compete, is seen as only a way of educating them for later life. My returns on the day of the race were three out of

ten. This blue chequer hen has had two races previously, Kingsdown and Newton Abbot, where she was on both occasions many hours behind the leaders. However, she competed in these races having recently recovered from a broken foot. This Young Bird season has seen for me at least six birds with various injuries, some with broken legs. Many of the injuries are the consequence of hawk and peregrine attacks, which you learn to live with as one of the hazards locally. The food which I use for my pigeons varies, but I mainly use Mixed Corn, Cut Maize, Whole Oats, Barley, and Economy mixes. Cod liver oil is used regularly on food.

John Rodway. Probable 1st SW Section. Roy Waters of Salisbury. Roy’ s gay pied hen named “ Little Angel” by Roy’ s wife Megan is bred from a Gaby Vandenabeele x Mark Dorrington of Litton nr Bristol. She was sent flying to the perch on her first race she has ever had only preceded by six training tosses to the coast. When she arrived you could see that she had tried and had two tail feathers missing. Megan gave her this name as she is a believer that white feathers are from angels. Roy would like to thank every member of the Classic for organising this race and the work they do all season.

Roy Waters.

Probable 2nd SW Section. Mark & Julie Gower of Fordingbridge. The pigeon that I timed is a red cock that was bred from an Andy Parsons gift bird when paired to a Paul Stone Southwell. He is a darkness young bird and this was his second race having been sent to Seaton with the Wiltshire federation. This year my young birds have been fed on a mixture of farm beans, peas and barley with super widowhood left over from old bird racing. The cock was one of three that came together and from a team of 15 sent to the race 12 made it home on the day. Thanks go to Gordon our training supervisor !

Mark Gower. OLD HENS Probable 1st Open Tony Barrett of Portsmouth

with “Annie” Probable 1st Open 1st SE Section. Tony Barrett of Portsmouth. My Old Hens Winner is a 2 year old Cooreman x Vandenabeele, bred for me by a good friend Jason Ross as a gift. The old hen is now been named as she has won the CSCFC as “ ANNIE” after my wife's Nan who is 92 and lives with me and my family. She regularly cleans the lofts as part of her keep!!! Lol. “ ANNIE” was sent on 14 day old babies and still guarding her old nest box . The previous week she was sent to Guernsey for training with the young birds in the Solent Federation and was in the basket for 4 nights due to bad weather. I would like to say thanks to all my friends who have congratulated me on my CSCFC Old Hens win.

Tony Barrett. “ Annie” Probable 2nd Open 1st NE Section. Steve & Paul Kulpa of Reading. Steve and Paul timed a 5 year old Meuleman X De Klak hen. Her sire is bred by Ponderosa UK Stud, from their top Meuleman lines. The dam is 50% Ponderosa Meuleman and 50% De klak. She is one of their top channel pigeons, and has taken good Classic and National positions in the past. She has been 9th section 55th open Bergerac Classic 2008, 12th section 119th open Bergerac Classic 2009, 32nd Section E 63rd open NFC, 63rd Section E 134th Open NFC saintes this year.

Steve & Paul Kulpa. Probable 1st SW Section. Ron & Vince McConnell of Poole. I race as a partnership with my farther Ron. We have been racing now for 20 years with a few house moves in between. We mainly race roundabout but this year, found we had a few lazy hens which held back the others which resulted in them all being stopped. The cocks went on to fly well and this has made us decide next year to fly cocks in the main season and hens only for the Classic and big hen races. We started this year with 18 cocks and 20 hens. Last week we were 3rd open in the Dorset open young bird race with a younger brother to this hen. I sent 5 to the Classic race and had four on the day, but didn t̀ clock the others as they were 2 hours later from a 100m race, which turned out to be pretty hard around here for youngsters. The hen is off John Gerald's old family of Hartogs pigeons and I would like to thank him, even

for all the rubbish he gives me to try each year, to see if there are any good ones. Must of taken all the goods ones with him now he‘s racing abroad. Everyone I know has had it or knows about sickness with youngsters but we must move forward to combat it. I would like to thank every one who helps with everything to do with the Classic as I feel its one of the best clubs. Probable 1st NW Section. Gwyn & Joy Lloyd of Hereford. Our NW section winning 2 year old hen is a blue pied Vandenbeele. As a young bird we lost her from the 1st Frome race. She was reported by a non fancier family in Chippenham who said she had made herself at home in their porch & would very much like to keep her to which we agreed. She remained quite happily in her new home for six weeks & then just suddenly came back to us. She is a Grandaughter out of our 1st section/1st open 2008 old hens race. As a yearling she was quite a consistent little racer & won a couple of club cards. She has had three races this season, one of which was the Saintes race (450miles), from which we clocked her the next morning. We sent 14 birds in total to yesterdays race. 4 oh’s & 10 yb’s. 3 oh’s & 5 yb’s on day & 2yb’s this morning before 7am. Many thanks to Keith Mott for the excellent condition of the birds, for what has been a difficult season weatherwise for liberating pigeons. Also a big thank you to Clare & all marking staff.

Gwyn and Joy Lloyd. Convoyers Report What a weekend! As I have always stated, all you can do as a pigeon convoyer, is produce the best race possible with the conditions you are presented with on the given weekend. With the Carentan Classic last Saturday I think I’ m right in stating that we got it spot on! It was another game of chess and before we had even put a pigeon in the basket I knew it was going to be a hard job. Although the Saturday was predicted to be a fair day with a few good options, the liberation had to be that day, as the Sunday and Monday were predicted to be a complete washout and no chance of racing from France.

My routine has been much the same for all the 2010 CSCFC races in that, I met up with my driver, Geoff Biffen, at the Boxhill Transport yard in Capel at noon on Wednesday and we proceeded to make 110 mile drive down to Wanstrow in Somerset to pick up the Classic’ s trailer, after which we went on to the Frome marking station, where I filled up the transporter’ s water tank and cleaned out the water system. We spent the night at Frome and unloaded the crates ready for marking on Thursday morning. I woke up at 06.45hrs on the day of marking and laid out water on the empty side of the transporter so the birds could get a drink as they were loaded and on the completion of marking, which was very busy, we left Frome at 12.45hrs, arriving at the Salisbury marking station at 13.30hrs. All the birds were watered at the Salisbury marking stations and I must say looked in very good order in the club’ s crates. We loaded up the Salisbury birds and left the station at 17.05hrs, arriving at Portsmouth docks at 18.10hrs, where I watered the birds on the dock. We departed for France at 22.45hrs and arrived in Caen at 05.45hrs. Driving in to the Carentan liberation site at 07.15hrs, I was amazed how quickly we got there and if it could be arranged the CSCFC could possibly marking for this event on a Friday. I watered the convoy on arrival on site and I must say, I was very impressed with the Cattle Market liberation site at Carentan and will be doing a full report with photos in ‘ON THE ROAD’ within the next couple of weeks. I fed the convoy at 14.00 hrs and again must say it is full credit to the member as most of the young birds were well basket trained and were drinking well. I telephoned my race advisors, Roy Ferriman and Steve Appleby, at 20.30hrs and they gave me a favourable weather report for the Saturday, but it would be a waiting game, with Sunday and Monday being a complete washout. I awoke at 05.30hrs on the Saturday race day to 100% high cloud cover, which was clearing as I was watching it. The race day blossomed in to blue skies and sun shine, but the problem was in main land England, with cloud cover and drizzly rain in the West Country, which was clearing to the east. I rang Roy and Steve several times in those few hours and we finally established a good line of flight at 10.00hrs. I liberated the 2,200 birds at 10.30hrs in a strong south west wind and convoy cleared the site with out turning in a northerly direction. On our short drive back through France to Caen the weather was perfect and on arrival the English Cannel was like a sun bathed mill pond. We crossed a very cloud covered and misty English Channel on Sunday morning, arriving at Portsmouth at 06.30 hrs to 100% heavy cloud cover, mist and light drizzling rain. I hope the member of the CSCFC have enjoyed the racing this season, I have certainly enjoyed the experience of doing the convoying work and using their wonderful transporter. I would like to say a special ‘thanks’ to my drivers, Geoff Biffen and Mike Clarke, and my race advisors, Roy Ferriman and Steve Appleby for all their good work in the 2010 season. The Central Southern Classic Flying Club: pigeon racing at it’ s best!
