We once believed learning how to
read was a natural process like
learning how to walk.

We now know that learning to read is a social process that begins right from
birth.

Young children will not simply “figure out” literacy if left to their own devices.

Adults play a critical role by providingrich literacy experiences and by interacting with them in those
experiences.

What are some things we can do as parents?
![Page 8: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
1. Find time to read with your child.
![Page 9: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
• make sure you are both in a good mood
• create a cozy space for reading
• read often- not just at bedtime!
![Page 10: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The warm and safe feeling that children get from sharing books with
adults at an early age will likely follow them throughout their lives.
![Page 11: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
2.
Children who enjoy books will want to learn how to
read.
![Page 12: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
2. Talk with your child

Have regular conversations, talk about your feelings and your child’s feelings and ask
exploratory questions.
![Page 14: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Oral language is the foundation of reading!
![Page 15: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
3. Provide opportunities for storytelling
![Page 16: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
• Act out stories with stuffies, dolls or puppets
• Tell family stories
• Encourage your child to re-tell favourite stories
![Page 17: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Playing with stories and storytelling helps children
understand the structure of stories.
![Page 18: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
4. Help foster an awareness of print
![Page 19: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
• point out signs/ print in the environment
• allow your child to help with:• grocery lists• labels on coat racks/toy boxes• recipes while cooking
![Page 20: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
An awareness of print helps children feel comfortable with
books and understand that print is useful
![Page 21: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
5. Encourage letter and word recognition

• point to the words with your fingers while you read with your child
• encourage your child to recognize his/her name
![Page 23: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Understanding that print follows certain conventions
helps with school readiness
![Page 24: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
6. Rhyme and sing with your child often

• rhymes draw attention to language and sounds
• songs break language down beautifully in a way that engages children
![Page 26: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Children learn best by doing things, and they love singing and
rhyming with you!
![Page 27: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
(no matter what you sound like)

The ability to distinguish the different sounds that make up words is a strong predictor of how well children will learn to
read.
![Page 29: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Does this sound like a lot of work?
![Page 30: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Take comfort that these are things that we already do
naturally as parents
![Page 31: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Want to see some of this in action?
![Page 32: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Participate in your library’s storytime!

During storytime, librarians model interactive storytelling…
![Page 34: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
… favourite stories and rhymes are repeated weekly…
![Page 35: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
… puppets and props are used to make stories and language fun…
![Page 36: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
… and all this is done in arich environment that fosters
early literacy.
![Page 37: Storytime&Early Literacy](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062418/55564bd5d8b42a8d0f8b4e43/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Remember… the earlier a child is exposed to language and literacy activities, the greater the child’s chances for future literacy and
academic success.

What are you waiting for?
