ADULT BOOKCLUB SELECTIONS
September Nonfiction Book Club Selection for Adults
Synopsis by Anne Morris (Reference Librarian)
This is my favorite, so far, of David Sedaris’ many auto-biographical essay collections. Famous for his readings
on NPR’s This American Life, Sedaris is
uproarious, melancholic, familiar, and strange. His deadpan delivery is one of the joys of American come-
dy. He finds the absurd in the everyday, is not beyond telling tales on his five siblings, and ably demonstrates that his mother and father raised them well before the
age of helicopter parenting.
The title essay here refers to Sedaris’ move to France with his partner, Hugh, while knowing nothing of the
French language and possessing no discernible language-learning aptitude. While in France, he is sized up as a likely French pickpocket by “ugly Americans” on the Paris
Metro, is edified while listening to a quartet of Houstonians debating which city is
better: Houston or Paris (Houston has air conditioning and Paris does not, putting Paris at a distinct disadvantage), and further finds himself a fish-out-of-water when
they move to a small town in Normandy. Note: Sampling any essay by Sedaris is more to be savored for having heard him read any
other of his essays before an audience (try YouTube).
Recurring subjects in the Sedaris index include: college, part-time jobs, family pets,
and life in the big city (New York, Chicago and Tokyo among them).
Sedaris and his partner now live in Sussex, an hour’s drive from London, where one hopes he is having some success in picking up the language.
