Storytellers Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued)

Lesson 1: The Beginning

You may have heard of Genesis 1:1, the first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning, God created the

heavens and the earth.” It’s amazing to picture our world being crafted and designed by God

himself, but God’s creativity doesn’t end in Genesis. God is still our creator today, and he has known

our stories from the moment time began.

Lesson 2: The Nation

The nation of Israel had one of the strangest road trips in history. Their path went out of Egypt,

through a sea, and into the desert. No matter where they went, God’s people knew that they were

on the right track, because God led them in an incredible way. God still leads us today!

Lesson 3: The Kings

Under the rule of the kings, God’s people in the land of Israel had some of their best moments, and

some of their worst. God’s wonderful promises to king David were almost forgotten as the kings

after him disobeyed God, and did what was wrong. Through their stories, we see the power of God as our great defender.

Lesson 4: The Prophets

Few people knew God better than the prophets. Their job was to tell people what God wanted them

to know whether or not they wanted to hear it. There were many different prophets, with many

messages from God, but one was always the same. If you need hope, you just have to turn to God.

Lesson 5: The Son

At every point in God’s story, there are hints pointing forward to the greatest story of all. From the

beginning, God said sin would be defeated. When Jesus came to earth, that promise became true. He

is God’s Son, the one everything in God’s story points to. Jesus shows us what God is really like.

Lesson 6: The Savior

Jesus’ story showed us clearly who God is. He is our rescuer, our defender, and our hope but the

greatest act of Jesus’ life showed us that he is even more than that. Jesus stepped into our world and took the punishment we deserve, and gave his life, all to become our Savior.

Lesson 7: The Lord

Jesus’ life was extraordinary. Everywhere He went, people noticed something unique about Him. He

had authority, knowledge, and power that no one else ever could. Also, he did something no one

else ever will. Jesus took our punishment, and defeated death. Still today, Jesus is more than a king,

more than a great person. He is the Lord; the one God’s story is all about. He is the one we can trust

to lead every part of our lives.

Welcome 1:00 Hey everyone, my name is ___________. Today is going to be amazing. We are celebrating Easter! Whether you’ve been here fifty times, or this is your first time here, I’m super glad you made it. We’ll have music, games, and most importantly, we’re going to hear an incredible true story about God, this world, and all of us! You’ll be doing all of this with your squads, the people in your grade. Make sure you know what your squad’s color is, if you aren’t sure, just check out these flags!

Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is, but you don’t have to have them share with the whole group.

It’s great to hear what all of you have been doing! Sharing stories can be super fun. Today we get to talk about the greatest story of all time, a story that you and I are part of!

We’ll get to that story in a few minutes, but right now we’re going to sing and worship God! Worship means showing God that we love him. There are all kinds of ways to worship, like coming to church, talking about how awesome God is, and spending time with him. One fun way to worship is by singing about God! Let’s stand, sing, and get ready to jump!

Worshipping with you is awesome. You can sit back down, but let’s keep on thinking about God for a minute, and talk to him. You can talk to God anywhere and anytime, he’s always ready to listen to you. You matter so much to Him. Let’s close our eyes to help us focus on God while we talk to him. God, you are incredible. We are so glad to be part of your story, and thankful that you love us. Help us to learn more about you and your son, Jesus, today. Amen. Alright, it’s time to check in with a great group of super heroes, the Light Force!

Lesson Intro 5:00

What is the Light Force going to do? Why would all of this happen? All of us have different stories. Some of us are going through tough stuff right now, like the Light Force. Some of us may feel like this is the best day ever! However you feel today, your story is important. This series is called “Storytellers,” because it’s about the biggest story of all, a story that includes all of us, and every person who has ever lived. This is about God’s story. It’s the story of our world. Do This: Show kids the book. Make sure the hollow side is facing you, so the kids can’t see it. The Light Force is fighting against the darkness in the Nexus. We can’t see it, but there’s a kind of darkness in our world, too. We call that darkness sin. Sin is another word for doing something you know is wrong, and everyone has done things they know are wrong. Maybe it was telling a lie, hurting someone else, or cheating. If our parents or teachers catch us doing wrong things, we might get punished. Even if we don’t get caught, though, something terrible happens when we sin. It separates us from God, because he is perfect. Every person on earth has been separated from God by the wrong things they’ve done. I have done wrong things, things that deserve consequences. Even if we didn’t get caught, God knows what we’ve done. And there’s nothing you and I can do to fix what has happened. We can’t go back and change what we’ve done wrong. We can’t do enough good things to cover up our sin, it just doesn’t work. God made this story to show how much he loves us, and we turned him away. Do This: Place the book on the table, over the place where there is a hole. Know This: Make sure the table is set up, with the props underneath, before the lesson begins.

God could have given up on this story when people started doing wrong things. He could have started over, but He didn’t. Instead, He started an incredible plan. He kept

the story going. Everything in history is a part of this huge story, and everything points to the one way you and I can be friends with God again. That’s what this verse is about.

Memory Verse 2:00

Do This: Read the verse from the screen. For thousands of years, people wondered how they could be close to God again. They tried to fix the problem of sin by paying for the wrong things they did, or by doing all the right things, but it was never enough. Then, when God’s son showed up, everything changed. This verse tells us that God speaks to us through his Son, Jesus. Jesus came to earth so that we could know how much God loves us. He gave everything to show us that love. Instead of giving up on us, God’s son came to live with us. Jesus was even willing to take the punishment that you and I deserved for sin. That’s the story that God wants you and I to know. That’s the power of God’s love. Whether this is new to you, or you’ve heard it before, that’s ok. Jesus’ story is so important, and we’re going to be hearing all about what he did in a few minutes. Right now, though, we need to find out what happens to the Light Force team.

Media: Part 2 8:00 Will the Syndicate win? What happened to Vanguard? Let’s find out the rest of the Light Force’s story.

Memory Verse Slide: Hebrews 1:1-2 “In the past, God spoke to our people through the

Storytellers Lesson 7

March 31/April 1 9

What an incredible story! That’s why Easter is a celebration, because now we know that nothing is greater than God’s love for us.

Application 10:00

You want to know something even more amazing? Jesus’ story isn’t over! He is still alive with God, and still knows and cares about every one of us. God’s story is still going, and that’s a big deal for us, because his story isn’t made up, it’s completely true. The stories in the Bible actually happened, real people saw God do amazing things, and wrote about it. That’s why God’s story is so important for all of us to know. It’s more than just a story, it’s real life, and it began thousands of years ago.

Do This: Open the book on the table, reach in, and take out the tree. Place the tree in the front right corner of the table. Make sure to leave the book in place.

God made this whole world, and knows every inch of it. From the beginning, He’s wanted people to know more about him, to follow and love him, but the wrong things we do separate us from him. The first people sinned, just like every person after them. Just like them, you and I have sinned. We’ve lied, disobeyed, hurt others, and done things we know are wrong. Right from the start, we brought darkness into God’s story.

Do This: Reach through the book and take out a crown. Set it next to the tree.

God’s people tried to fix the wrong things they had done. They tried to follow God’s laws, and even tried to give God things to make up for the wrong they had done, but it was never enough. For hundreds of years, God’s people followed kings. Some of them did the right things, but some of them disobeyed God, and separated people from him even more. None of them were powerful enough to fix the wrong things people had done.

Do This: Reach through the book and take out the scroll. Place it next to the crown.

God didn’t give up, though. He sent messages through people called “prophets.” They told people over and over to ask God to forgive them, to obey him, but people could never do enough good things to make up for the wrong things they had done. People still hurt others, lied, stole, and brought even more darkness into our world. Then, God did something incredible.

Do This: Reach through the book, and take out the cross. Place it next to the scroll.

God sent his son, Jesus, to live on earth. When Jesus came, everything changed. He healed people, loved them, and most amazingly of all, forgave them for sin. He showed us that even though we have disobeyed God, He still loves us. After all this, Jesus let himself be captured, put on a cross, and he died. When He died, He took the punishment for everyone’s sins. He gave us the chance to be close to God again. Then, Jesus proved that he was stronger than sin, and stronger than death. Jesus came back to life! Then, Jesus sent his friends and followers out to tell everyone about what he did for them. That’s why they started the church.

Do This: Reach into the book, and take out the church. Place it next to the cross.

The “church” is more than just a building. It’s what we call all of the people who love and follow Jesus. God’s story isn’t over, he’s still doing amazing things, and changing so many people’s lives today, because of what Jesus did. This story is huge. It is happening all around the world, over thousands of years, but there’s one important part I want you to know about.

Do This: Reach into the book and take out a mirror and stand. Show the mirror to the kids as you talk, then place it on the stand.

You are an important part of God’s story, the story that began thousands of years ago. All these stories, all that Jesus did was because God loves you. God wants you to be part of his family, to follow him with your whole life. In fact, that’s why God made you, so you could know and love him.

Storytellers Lesson 7

March 31/April 1 11

All these stories we hear in the Bible happened long ago, but your story is happening now. Your choices all make a difference in God’s plan, and he cares about every moment of your life. Do This: Indicate the items on the table as you talk through the next paragraph. We have all done things we know we shouldn’t have, and that keeps us from God. We can try to do everything right, try to fix it, but we can never work hard enough, never fix all the wrong things we’ve done. Through Jesus, God gives us another chance. It’s a chance to follow Him, start a new story, and live the way you He made you to. Your story isn’t finished, and today you can make a choice that will change it forever, the choice to trust and follow Jesus. This choice will change your life, but it won’t make it perfect. Tough things will still happen, and sometimes you will still sin. When that happens, know that God still loves you more than you can ever know. Jesus still took your punishment for all the sins you have done, and ever will do. Following God means that when we do wrong things, God will always be there to help us and teach us what the right thing to do is. Finally, choosing to follow Jesus means that one day we’ll live forever with God in heaven. If you have questions about all this, that’s ok. Questions are awesome, because they show that you care. This is the most important choice you will ever make, and we want you to be completely sure about it. You can ask me or any of the leaders here to tell you more about Jesus, and we would love to talk with you. Maybe you’ve already decided to follow Jesus. That is awesome! Your part in God’s story is growing as you follow and learn about him. If you haven’t decided to follow Jesus yet, and you want to, today can be your day. It’s the day your story meets God’s story, and you can choose to trust him with your whole life. You can make that choice here and now, and all you have to do is tell God. He hears what you say, and even what you think. You can pray just by thinking words in your head, God knows what you are saying. We’re going to pray in just a minute, but I want you to know, these exact words aren’t what is important. In this prayer, we’re just telling God that we are sorry for sinning, that we believe Jesus died and came back to life, and that we want to follow him with our whole lives. It’s your choice. I can’t choose for you, your parents can’t, and your friends can’t. This is your choice. If you’ve decided to follow Jesus already, think about that decision while we pray, and think about how following Jesus has changed your life.

Storytellers Lesson 7

March 31/April 1 12

Worship 8:00

Let’s close our eyes, and talk to God. For those of you that are ready to make the choice to follow Jesus, you can repeat this prayer after me, out loud or think the words to yourself, God can still hear you if you do that.

Do This: Read this prayer word for word, pausing after each line to allow kids to repeat and keep up.

God, I know that I have sinned. I’ve made bad choices, and I am sorry. I believe that Jesus is your son. I believe that he died on the cross, took my punishment, and came back to life, so that I can be forgiven. Jesus, I ask you now to be my leader, Savior, and friend forever. I choose to follow you. Amen.

If you just decided to make Jesus the leader of your life, congratulations! You have just made the most important choice of your life. Can we give them a round of applause? Everyone, we’re going to stand up. If you just decided to follow Jesus for the first time, we have something we want to give you. You can follow ________ to find out more about this awesome choice you just made, and talk about life with Jesus! Also, we have a book that we’d like to give you. It’ll help you get started following Jesus. Do This: Show kids the “Following Jesus” booklet.

Congratulations!

Storytellers Lesson 7

March 31/April 1 13

If you just decided to follow Jesus for the first time, you can follow __________ now. Everyone else, we are going to celebrate and worship God with a couple songs. This first one is about what Jesus did, and how through him God made a way for us to know and live for him!

The way God’s love changes our lives is incredible! Some of the incredible musicians here at Eagle Brook have written a song to celebrate Easter! This week, hundreds of people are trusting Jesus with their lives and joining God’s family. That calls for a huge celebration! Let’s sing this song together!

What an awesome song! If you’re just coming back in, come on up! You can all stay standing, because’ we’re about to have some fun! First, though, I just want to say congratulations again to everyone who made the decision to follow Jesus today! I am so excited for all of you, and so glad you want God to be the leader of your story.

Group Activity 10:00

In a moment, we’re going to play an awesome Easter game, but first, I have to tell you how to play. This game is called Easter Egg Scramble, and it’s a game for your teams. Each of your teams has a square made of cones. You can’t leave that square! Your goal is to toss Easter eggs from your square into the basket inside the other teams’ squares. Once an

egg is in the basket, you can’t take it out. In fact, you can’t touch the baskets at all. Let’s see how many eggs you can get into the other teams’ baskets! Now it’s time to find your team’s square. If you are in first grade, head to the white square! If you are in second grade, go to the orange square! Third grade, find the silver square, fourth, find the teal square, and fifth, head to the black square!

Know This: If you have space, set up the tape in five squares, to roughly form a circle. If possible, have a leader in the middle of the circle to throw eggs that land in the middle into the surrounding squares. A diagram has been provided to help with setup. Know This: If you don’t have space or have fewer grades in your area, you can adapt this game to be a boys vs. girls game with the teams divided by a center line, and set up while the teacher is explaining the game. If you have three grades in your area, you could make each grade’s zone a square, with each bordering the other two (see the setup diagram). Do This: However this game is set up, make sure at least one basket is in each area. If there are only two teams, you may want to use multiple baskets. The baskets should be close enough for other kids to throw eggs into them, but far enough back that the eggs have to be thrown.

Let’s get the game started! Remember, try to get the eggs in the other teams’ baskets!

Do This: Keep the game going for about eight minutes, or until it is time to wrap up, whichever comes first. Feel free to play multiple times if time allows, declaring a winner each round, and challenging teams to win the next round.

I’m so glad that all of you could be here for Easter! If you made Jesus the leader of your life today, that is the greatest choice you could ever make! I am so excited for you, and for the incredible adventure you have in store while following Jesus. If you made that choice, be sure to tell your family or the people you came with! If you have more questions about Jesus or anything else we talked about today, any of the leaders in here would love to talk with you, hear your story, and answer your questions.

This card helps your family learn what we talked about today, and it has something super cool on the back. This is a timeline of God’s big story! You can also get a sticker to put on the last open spot on the timeline. Let’s finish up by talking to God. It’s so amazing how much He loves us, and how he gives us the chance to live with him! God, thank you for loving us. Thank you for all those who chose to make you the leader of their life today. You are incredible! Help us to follow you every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
