Welcome to the world under your bed – where left is right, up is down and everything that’s disgusting is suddenly oozingly delightful. Waiting to show you around the WOLEB (hint – read the name backwards) are the stinkersome Grunt, Guff, Scratch and Sniff. Don’t forget to bring your goggles in case these naughty night-time creatures blow dozy-dust into your eyes and you find yourself falling aslee-zzzzz . . .

What’s blue and travels through time? No, it’s not the Tardis – it’s an ice-cream van! Izzy’s grandpa used to tell the BEST stories. There was the one about giving a 99 Flake to a pharaoh in ancient Egypt, and another about feeding a Fab to a hungry T-Rex. But what if they weren’t just stories? Get ready to be frozen in time this World Book Day . . .

Think you know everything about the North Pole? Think again. Ever wondered what’s hiding under your bed? Wonder no more. Looking for an adventure in the olden days? All aboard the big blue ice-cream van! Tom Fletcher’s magical imagination has been very busy indeed – check out which stories caught our reporter’s eyes!

Children at Pomplebrook Infant School were shocked to discover a monster in their book! Despite tickling, wiggling and shaking this little blue mischief-maker, they just couldn’t get him out! Harry, aged four, was on the scene and reported that the roarsome little guy had pink horns and friendly fangs and was wearing a stripy T-shirt. The school has now decided to adopt Monster and he can be found most days in the reading corner of the library, having a snooze . . .

Santa’s elves – Snozzletrump, Specklehump, Sparklefoot, Sugarsnout, Starlamp, Spudcheeks, Snowcrumb and Sprout – were surprised to discover a giant frozen egg while digging for presents in the snowy fields of the North Pole. What could be inside? After perching his giant bottom on it for several long hours, Santa finally cracked it! Inside the egg was the Christmasaurus (Chrissy to his friends). So inspired was World Book Day author and McFly popstar Tom Fletcher that he wrote a song all about this unusual dinosaur. Then he wrote another and another – and now Tom Fletcher is the first-ever author to write a soundtrack to his own book! Get ready to dance all the way to Christmas 2018.

Q. How long does it take to write a book?A. It does depend on how easily the creative juices are flowing – some chapters or episodes come really naturally and fast. The hardest part is starting and I find the first chapter the most difficult. Then I try to give myself a month of regular writing (every day if possible) to get the bulk of the plot and characterization worked out.

Q. You present shows about so many different sports all around the world. Do you have a favourite sporting event?A. London 2012 was the ultimate highlight and to work on the Olympics and Paralympics in my home city will never be topped. I love the big multi-sport events and have enjoyed various Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games as well, but of course I love anything with horses – racing, eventing, show jumping and dressage are all wonderful to cover.

Ask Clare Balding

Girl who thinks she is a

DOG!Fennel and Twiglet are best friends. They do everything together, from curling up in their basket to playing fetch in the park. Twiglet understands Fennel like no one else, especially her long-held dream of winning Crufts. There’s just one problem: Fennel isn’t a dog. And a girl can’t win a competition for dogs, no matter how much she acts like one. Can she?

STORY TIMES

When she was young, Clare Balding thought she was a dog. ‘The dogs got a lot of attention and love and their lives generally seemed very nice. So I wanted that,’ she says. Disappointed to discover she was only human, Clare did her best to spend every waking hour with dogs and ponies. For this World Book Day, Clare has written a funny and heart-warming new animal story inspired by her younger self! It will be available for £1 in lots of lovely bookshops and supermarkets and pupils can get it for free with their £1 book token.

Did you know that Clare Balding is the author of two other funny animal stories for children? Inspired by her love of horses, The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop and The Racehorse Who Disappeared follow a ten-year-old girl, Charlie, who decides to save her family from financial ruin by training a racehorse. Perfect for fans of Dick King-Smith and Gerald Durrell, these are heart-warming stories with great girl-power messages.

Design a Poster

Design a poster for something you might find in the Woleb and remember to make everything back to front!

Author Tom Fletcher is brilliant at creating different worlds and turning things you thought you knew upside down! The Creakers live under the bed in the Woleb, which is all messy and smelly

and everything’s the opposite! What is nice in our world is disgusting in the Woleb. For example, shops sell really disgusting things like belly-button fluff blankets and there is an UnFunFair.

May result in an overactive imagination!

Imagine your own storyThrough the blue door

In the early part of the novel the four young magicians make their way to the Magic Circle headquarters for an induction week. The Magic Circle headquarters is ‘a place of secrets, intrigue and utter wonderment’ and ‘was the place where a woman was first sawn in half (legally)’. (p.15)

Like the four characters in the novel, imagine that you are standing half excited and half terrified, poised on the steps of this great building. Suddenly, stood before the front door, you are faced with ‘the creaking of the blue door as it slowly, majestically began to open.’ (p.21) Now imagine what you will see first upon entering . . .
