T he curtain rises on the small square of an old German village. A beautiful young girl is sitting on the balcony of a decrepit old house. She is reading a book. Directly across the square is the village pub and next to that the

private home of Swanilda, the most beautiful and sought after girl in the village. Swanilda awakens this morning with high expectations of spending the day with her beloved boyfriend Franz, to whom she has already promised her heart and accepted his ring. Entering the village square, Swanilda promptly notices the girl on the balcony. A new girl in town? Swanilda tries to get the girl’s attention but to no avail. When she sees Franz approaching in the distance, she decides to hide and surprise him. Unfortunately her plan backfires, as her apparent absence gives Franz the opportunity to flirt unfettered with the girl on the balcony. Swanilda has seen enough. Angrily, she returns the ring and slams her door in Franz’s face.The town’s mayor arrives and declares that the following day will be a special day to celebrate love. Anyone getting married will receive a pouch of gold. The villagers dance merrily at this announcement but are startled by an explosion emanating from the old house with the balcony. Swanilda explains to the startled mayor that this sort of thing is common. The owner of the house is an eccentric old man by the name of Dr. Coppelius. No one quite knows what he does, and he has rarely been seen in public. To lighten the mood, the mayor gives each of the boys a stalk of wheat and suggests they use it to win the heart of the village girls. According to local folklore, if a boy gives a stalk of wheat to a girl and the seeds rattle when shaken, then the boy’s love is true. Not surprisingly, Swanilda’s stalk is silent and she runs off in disgust. As evening approaches the villagers depart, allowing the reclusive Coppelius a chance to get away for his evening walk. Franz’s rowdy friends exit the pub and tease the old man until they are chased off. Swanhilda emerges from her home with her friends, determined to confront the pretty girl on the balcony who has seemingly become her rival. She is in luck! Dr. Coppelius has unknowingly dropped his keys.

Story

T iptoeing into Dr. Coppelius’ workshop, Swanhilda and her friends find the girl still sitting on the bal-cony reading. When all attempts to get her attention fail, they realize that the pretty girl that Franz has been flirting with is a doll. They dance gleefully around the workshop, winding up and dancing

with the other mechanical dolls that have been made by the eccentric old Dr. Coppelius, who suddenly bursts in in a rage. He chases all the girls away except Swanhilda, who is trapped out on his balcony.

Coppelius is tidying up after the girls when he hears a noise at the window. Could it be? Another intrud-er? Franz is confronted as he creeps across the floor. Coppelius demands to know why he has come to rob him. Franz denies that intention and explains that he has fallen in love with the beautiful girl on the balcony. Coppelius, at first confused, suddenly realizes that his handiwork is being complimented. He asks money from Franz for her hand in marriage. Franz refuses, calling the old man a devil for such a suggestion. Coppelius has another idea. Perhaps he can fulfill his lifelong dream with the help of this silly young fool. He plies Franz with liquor until he passes out, digs out his ancient book of magic spells, and proceeds to transfer Franz’s life force into his mechanical creation. The magic actually works! His doll, who he has named Coppelia after himself, is alive! Of course he doesn’t realize that Swanilda has swapped clothes with the doll in an attempt to avoid being caught. She now finds herself in the awkward position of carrying her pretense much farther than she had planned. Franz awakens from his drunken stupor and is reunited with Swanilda. He has learned a lesson not to flirt with other girls. Dr. Coppelius is left alone, slumped beside the image of his shattered dreams.

Act 3

T his mayor’s celebration is underway and the entire village is awash with festivities and dancing. Dr. Coppelius receives compensation for his broken dolls, Swanilda and Franz are wed, and everyone in the village lives happily ever after.

The girls decide to venture in to the dark and mysterious house. Now Coppelius himself returns to look for his lost keys and notices his door ajar. He cautiously creeps in, barely before Franz appears with a ladder. It seems that a surprise confrontation may be in store!
