DredgingWhen dredging, fishermen drag a heavy frame with an attached mesh bag-called a dredge—along the seabed to catch shellfish like scallops, clams and oysters that live on the sea floor or burrow into mud or sand.

Gill NettingGill netting is a common fishing method using fine-filament nets set across the path of migrating salmon. Mesh size, twine strength, and net length and depth are all closely regulated by fishery enforcement agencies to reduce by catch of non-target species.

HarpooningHarpooning is a traditional method for catching very large fish—and it’s still used today by skilled fishermen. Harpooners catch large predators such as bluefin tuna and swordfish by thrusting or shooting a long aluminum or wooden harpoon into the animal to bring it aboard.

Hook & LiningHook-and-line fishermen use a rod and fishing line with one or more hooks to catch a variety of fish ranging from open ocean swimmers like tuna and mahi mahi to bottom dwellers like cod.

Long LiningLong liners catch fish by using a central line up to 50 miles long that’s strung with smaller lines of baited hooks at spaced intervals. After leaving the line to “soak” for a time to attract fish, long liners return to haul in their catch.

Traps & PotsTraps and pots are submerged wire or wood cages that attract fish and hold them alive until fishermen return to haul in the gear. They are often used to catch lobsters, crabs and shrimp, and they’re also used to catch bottom-dwelling fish such as sablefish or Pacific rockfish.

Trawling & DraggingTrawlers tow a cone-shaped net behind a boat to catch fish. Midwater trawlers catch faster-swimming schooling fish such as sardines. Bottom trawlers catch fish that live on or near the sea floor, such as cod, flounder and shrimp.

TrollingTrolling is a hook-and-line method that tows fishing lines behind or alongside a boat. Fishermen use a variety of lures and baits catch fish that will follow a moving lure or bait such as salmon, mahi mahi and albacore tuna.
