And since were in this for the long haul, were committed to protecting the health of our oceans and supporting the abundance of marine life, too.

How fishermen catch fish is a crucial part of sustainability, so weve created a labeling system to help you easily identify what methods were used to catch the fish we feature in our seafood case.

our commitment to sustainable seafoodIn addition to our efforts to make sure youre informed about catch methods, we have other rigorous sustainable seafood practices, including the elimination depleted species such as bluefin tuna and sharks from our seafood departments. We were also one of the first American companies to support and participate in the Marine Stewardship Council, and we introduced the first eco-logically certified seafood to carry their Fish Forever seal of approval that guarantees that the labeled product is from a well-managed fishery and caught in an environmentally sustainable manner.

FPOwholefoodsmarket.com

Whole Foods Market 2009

CATCHMETHODS

Whole Foods Market

CATCHMETHODS

Whole Foods Market why sustainable seafood?Though modern fishing practices have endangered the fish supply and the environment, there is a way to responsibly enjoy fresh fish: choosing sustainable seafood. Because if we all make good choices, we can replenish fish stocks, help fishermen thrive and enjoy abundant wild-caught seafood nowand in the future.

caught fish can be considered sustainable if: Catch methods employed do not further depletion of vulnerable or endangered species (e.g. whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, seabirds), damage the habitat or create unwanted or wasted catch (bycatch).

The fishery is well managed.

It is not over-fished.

Catch Methods Guide Every fish we sell will now have a sign that shows the method that was usedto catch it. Here is more in-depth information about the different catch methods to help you make better informed seafood choices.

IMAGE OF DISPLAY CASE

CATCH METHO

D

DREDGING

CATCH METHO

D

LONG

LINING

CATCH METHO

D

HOOK & LINE

CATCH METHO

D

TR

APS & POTS

H

ARPOONING

CATCH METHO

D

CATCH METHO

D

TROLLING

CATCH METHO

D

G

ILL NETTING

CATCH METHO

D

TRA

WLIN

G / DRAGG

ING

DredgingWhen dredging, fishermen drag a heavy frame with an attached mesh bag-called a dredgealong the seabed to catch shellfish like scallops, clams and oysters that live on the sea floor or burrow into mud or sand.

Gill NettingGill netting is a common fishing method using fine-filament nets set across the path of migrating salmon. Mesh size, twine strength, and net length and depth are all closely regulated by fishery enforcement agencies to reduce by catch of non-target species.

HarpooningHarpooning is a traditional method for catching very large fishand its still used today by skilled fishermen. Harpooners catch large predators such as bluefin tuna and swordfish by thrusting or shooting a long aluminum or wooden harpoon into the animal to bring it aboard.

Hook & LiningHook-and-line fishermen use a rod and fishing line with one or more hooks to catch a variety of fish ranging from open ocean swimmers like tuna and mahi mahi to bottom dwellers like cod.

Long LiningLong liners catch fish by using a central line up to 50 miles long thats strung with smaller lines of baited hooks at spaced intervals. After leaving the line to soak for a time to attract fish, long liners return to haul in their catch.

Traps & PotsTraps and pots are submerged wire or wood cages that attract fish and hold them alive until fishermen return to haul in the gear. They are often used to catch lobsters, crabs and shrimp, and theyre also used to catch bottom-dwelling fish such as sablefish or Pacific rockfish.

Trawling & DraggingTrawlers tow a cone-shaped net behind a boat to catch fish. Midwater trawlers catch faster-swimming schooling fish such as sardines. Bottom trawlers catch fish that live on or near the sea floor, such as cod, flounder and shrimp.

TrollingTrolling is a hook-and-line method that tows fishing lines behind or alongside a boat. Fishermen use a variety of lures and baits catch fish that will follow a moving lure or bait such as salmon, mahi mahi and albacore tuna.

LOCALO

RG

AN

ICGR

ASS

FED

100%

FROM LOCAL PASTURE TO PLATE

SEALS & LOGOS

There was a time when people

knew where their meat came from,

and more than likely it came from

cattle who grazed right d...
