Erik Castro Santa Rosa, CAHARVESTERA portrait of immigrant labor through the faces of Sonoma County harvest workers.

In 2011 while on assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle, I photographed my first grape harvest; a night pick in Philo, California in the Anderson Valley. It was chaotic and I struggled to keep pace with the workers briskly cutting sticky grape clusters while filling plastic bins as fast as possible. A cloud of choking carbon monoxide wafted through the vineyard from truck engines and loud generators powering huge lights illuminating rows of grapes like a baseball field. That night stuck with me. I wanted to see those faces, but to me it was all a blur.

HARVESTER came from that experience. I wanted the public to see the faces of the people who traveled great distances—in this case all from Mexico--to toil at this labor-intensive job. In each image a Sonoma County harvest worker’s face is photographed the moment after he or she completes a harvest pick. The interaction I had with each harvest worker was intentionally brief much like street photography. It’s a purely visual story with each face its own personal narrative.

John F Martin Graton, CAIN CHARACTER was inspired by my experience with the SF opera. My introduction to opera was entirely by chance. My wife read, in a newspaper column, that the San Francisco Opera was looking for men of my height and build for Carmen. I went to an audition, and before I knew it, I was a supernumerary in the opera. From the beginning, I was fascinated by what happens when people put on makeup and costumes. They become the character. And I became a character as well. Most of the talent have no acting background. I certainly did not. Yet, when you put on the costume, you magically put on a persona. I can be a soldier, a servant or a guard or anything. From the start, I knew I wanted to set up a studio in the basement of the opera house. (Copyrighted cos-tumes cannot leave the Opera House!) For five frustrating years I tried to get permission, without success. Finally, one day, I just showed up with all my gear and set up a studio in the basement of the opera house. I would either get thrown out or have the chance to get some wonderful portraits. I was first in and last out. I arrived at the opera two hours before curtain to set up and took down the set after the show. During a production I invited the talent to come down for their portrait. I never knew who was going to come down or when so I had to stay on the set during the entire performance and then worked very fast, because they were on their way to the stage. I was obsessed! Needless to say, I did not get thrown out, and six years and 32 operas later, I had a huge body of work. suitable for an art book. I put my heart and soul into this project and would not compromise the integrity of the book for just any publisher. I was fortunate to have Mark Burstein as my agent and he found the perfect publisher, Amadeus Press. This book is the culmination of all those years and was a life-changing experience. I loved every minute of it.

Cynthia Helen Beecher Healdsburg, CAI was born with a broad periphery. Early on, I delighted in how everything around me fit together. So fleeting were the micro-seconds of expressions, and juxtapositions that I tried to capture what I saw and felt in writing from a young age, as one often lost in the shuffle of post-war upbringing. Photog-raphy as a cultural and linguistic tool was a natural extension of my efforts to document might be missed. It is my passion.

Ann Carranza Healdsburg, CAI am a writer, freelance journalist, essayist, poet and photographer. Writing and photography both tell vivid stories, albeit differently.

Two years ago, I had the idea of taking portraits of local farmers for a book with the working title, Family Food Farmers: Portraits from Sonoma County. I plan to publish in October 2017.

I couldn’t be happier with these portraits. The three photos are a small sample of the collection for the book.

Our foodshed is the most important place of local resilience. If we can produce the food we eat, then challenges wrought by a changing world can hold no fears for us. Too many people don’t know their local farmers intimately and I wanted to bring those faces touched by frost and sun and years of hard work to those near and far who believe that local farmers are the backbone of our existence.

I live with my husband of nearly 32 years, Leonel, and our neurotic border collie, Chica, and food-driv-en Chihuahua, Yoda.

Cecilia ClarkI entered college late in life, but upon taking the art requisite, I fell in love with the language of photography. In 2000, I graduated from CSU Sacramento with a BA in Studio Arts. I am privileged to have studied photographic art under Jim Ginney and Roger Vail.

My subjects are varied and reflect my interest in the glories of smaller, intimate scenes. The tools of the medium, as I practice it, include film, a flatbed scanner, and digital images. I’ve left the traditional darkroom behind in favor of the light of the computer screen. All images are printed using archival pigment inks on archival photographic papers.

Since retiring in 2004, traveling the world with my camera has occupied much of my time. As a result, I have lived in the Republic of Georgia, Egypt, Tajikistan, Macedonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, and most recently, Kyrgyzstan. My passion is learning about other cultures and capturing with photographs the stories of how people live.

Cher Cornett Johnson City, TNDeath from a uniquely female perspective is an idea I am exploring in a series of works using icons of historical and fictional stories as foundations, then taking liberties with the story. How is death perceived from a woman’s perspective, whether it be by illness, malice, accident, or suicide? How is a female death experienced from a societal perspective? I am not trying to create a coordinated style for these series, but to use idea and the story to dictate the artistry. Each has a slightly different point of view and emotional impact. Each tells a slightly different story. This is from the “Ophelia” series.

Eugenie Quan Corral San Ramon, CAMy art journey began when healers, and messages of wellness for mind, body, and spirit appeared too frequently to ignore. At the same time, I aspired to use art purposefully. By combining art and mindful-ness with painting and photography, I had a venue to capture these lessons for myself and others. I enjoy the power of Photoshop to create my own visions, altered cameras for a change in perspective and alternative processes to explore and push past boundaries. Beyond the imagery I create, photography is a mediation for me, a quiet, restorative place that is as much about creativity as it is mindfulness.

Gail Ginder Healdsburg, CAFamilies are made in many different ways. These photographs represent biologically-related families and families who come together through life experiences, unique interests, and tremendous hardship.

Photography is my passion and the work of the second half of my life. I make images of people experiencing life’s unexpected moments on the street and in their familiar environments. It’s a privilege to capture a moment in another’s life that is then gone forever. I am always trying to do this with curiosity and respect. This journey has changed the way I experience the world—I am simply paying more attention.

Stephanie Hamilton-Oravetz Santa Rosa, CAAs a photographer and a psychologist, I am interested in portraits, intimate stories told in images and words about people, places, history, life. A portrait stops time and gives birth to something new that holds both current and ancient histories. I am fascinated by the power of history, the activities of ghosts and spirits as they reside in our unconscious, our complex dances with the past and present.? I am interested in what is seen and what is unseen, the tangible and the intangible, what is on the surface and what is underneath.

The creation of a portrait honors the power of relationship.? A portrait is always co-created. The power of an image lies first in the relationship between the photographer and the person, place or object in front of the lens. When the portrait is viewed, if the viewer is engaged, touched and encouraged to create his or her own story about it, then a new relationship has been birthed.

Life has taught me lessons about resilience, grace, calm and beauty. My own story and my profession as a psychologist has left me equally well acquainted with grief, trauma, emotional storms and ugliness. Things are not always what they seem. Sometimes truths are hidden. Universal emotions, experiences, realities like grief and loss often cannot easily be put into words. The transient lives that we live always have light and dark in equal measure; everybody has something. My art is informed by it all.

The photographic portraits submitted for this show speak of something which is unspeakable: The loss of self that comes with the progression of Alzheimer’s Dementia. They were created to honor my many patients and their families who have suffered, and to educate those who try but find it hard to understand their experiences. When words fail us, sometimes images help.

Srividya Kannan Ramachandran New York, NYThe purpose of my art is to delight those who set aside searching for purposes in life, if only be so for the brief time they spend gazing at my work.

As a meditation student for the past three decades, I find that beneath the ever-running reductionist out-er mind, we are all blessed with a silent mental substratum. Reposing in this substratum termed chitta in Sanskrit yields a serene sense of bliss as also an effortless identification with a universal transcendent self. Seeking to understand the factors preventing us from resting perpetually in this tranquil chitta, I found that there are deep grooves representing innate propensities embedded in our sub-conscious that impel and compel us to get agitated in Pavlovian reflexive fashion.

The aim of my art then is to gently attenuate these propensities by directly coloring the chitta and inducing in it a sense of impersonal delight that is distinct from the usual responses of either personal joy or personal disappointment.

Since verisimilitude is processed and blocked off by our analytical outer mind, I concentrate on the abstract which by its very nature has to be appreciated by our silent subconscious. Art when perceived by this inner intuitive self, escapes the confines of the artist’s work itself and is reborn on every gaze with a unique effect within each distinct individual.

Intending to serve as a personalized psychological therapeutic, I present my art to co-travelers who search with me for the kingdom of heaven on this very earth that we inhabit.

Pamela Moulton Windsor, CAPhotography is all about capturing that story - that moment in which, without using the spoken word, the message from my subject is speaking from the heart to the viewer. That photo holds a message - frozen in time - for others to interpret, judge, savor or reject. This is what injects life and vibrance into my art! Through these unspoken words, I want to invite the viewer and the subject matter to interact at some level perhaps through questions regarding what is being seen, or what might happen. Perhaps confirmation of what they had anticipated! For me, photography should engage the viewer long enough to pause and encourage a personal review of common beliefs, an emotional experience, specialized skills, or dreams! My collection of photos is an effort to provide a visual support to the viewer’s words.

Photography is my “meditation.” It allows me time to pause, to be witness to a personal event and and hold it forever! It encourages me to find the soul in life around me and hold it as closely as I can. Capturing that moment, that CARPE DIEM moment has encouraged me to linger longer, look deeper, hear more clearly, embrace the energy around me, and savor any opportunity to be.

Adam Shemper Healdsburg, CAI’ve used the camera to describe the basic dilemma of being human in the world. Over the last 20 years, I’ve photographed people in both ordinary places and under extraordinary circumstances: in U.S. and international airports before and after September 11th, in the streets of Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco during protests against corporate globalization and war, inside Baghdad homes soon after the American-led invasion in 2003, a year later in the everyday, crowded streets of Hong Kong, around the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and later in France, where I lived in limbo before returning home in 2005, where I’ve stayed and focused on making images of family and friends in the South and in Northern California. Wandering and photographing in these disparate places, my focus has always been on existential life, and more recently in the context of the natural world.

Over the last two decades the world has become even more connected through trade and economics. The exchange of information via media and the internet has helped to inform our deepening awareness of living in and being part of an extremely delicate environment and vulnerable social fabric. The arrow of evolution in all aspects of life pushes toward greater integration and complexity, even as the difficulty of being one world seems insurmountable. The potential for exploitation, alienation and fragmentation are greater. The self is more vulnerable and even more vulnerable in isolation. Yet the potential for freedom and connection, to inhabit a more intimate and peaceful way of being, within and without, is as great as it has ever been.

In this context, photographing has been my means to investigate and be a witness to the existential and solitary life of others, as well as the medium to examine my own relationship to the world. Through photography, I?ve explored various aspects of my own experience, particularly isolation and distance, disconnect and freedom. And while photography has in some ways reinforced my feeling of being immured?the camera captures experience, while pushing it away?it has also brought me into a greater awareness of how I live in the world and how the world lives in me. I?ve gradually discovered a more intimate way of being with my self and others. Ultimately, the aim of my photography is to acknowledge the underlying truths of our existence, our ordinary suffering and our potential for liberation and freedom.

Maureen Wendle Santa Rosa, CAMy eye catches scenes that speak to my heart. I try to capture the feeling with the lense of a camera. Whether it be a young animal playing around it’s mamma in Africa, an interesting face that tells it own story or just a beautiful moment in time. To freeze those images to share with others gives me great pleasure.
