Peace Journalism Project Background Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT) was created peace journalism project from late of 2012 until the end of 2015. In 2012, peace journalism project started doing research and analysis on news from 12 media institution in the Cambodia that focuses on “An Analysis of Cambodia Print Media”. This research was counseled from Ms. Zoe Latumbo, the information officer of the United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia. The research report analyzed on war journalism and peace journalism and analyzed on news articles published related to the conflict in Boeung Kak Lak from May 27 to June 24, 2012.

On September 23, 2012, ACT through peace journalism project was organized Consultative Workshop on " The Role of Media in Peace Building in Cambodia " at Himawari Hotel with the participation from the officer of Ministry of Information, editors, journalists from various media institutions, and journalists associations or clubs. Since January 2013, peace journalism project has compiled a training book and select participants to attend the training course on peace journalism. On June11-14, 2013 ACT was conducted 1st workshop on peace journalism with 19 participants and 31 Sihanoukville. On November 28-29, 2013. Participants who have completed the first training course took part in to conducte training to 11 participants at ACT office and on August 31 to September 07-14, 2014 trainees participants who complete the first course was took part other one training on peace journalism with participants 37 participants at Eden Park restaurant in Phnom Penh. The trainees who joined with ACT training are mostly journalists, news editor, news program coordinator approximately from 20 various media institutions, NGOs staffs and student who from the universities in Phnom Penh. " Peace Journalism can happen when the editor and reportage, make decisions about what should be reported, and how the credible reports, how to provide the opportunities for the society can accept and appreciate on conflicts resolving by peaceful ..." ¬Lynch and McGoldrick 2005: 5

Ms. Yann Lyna, Manager of Yayo FM Radio Phnom Penh. She shared that after completing the Training from Sihanoukville on Peace Journalism she has learned strategies for writing news stories, during tense political demonstrations, by emphasizing the message of peace that the people want to have peace rather than conflict. The staff at her radio station went to take news directly to the actual places when the political issue after the elections, often the group of NGOs and people conduct some activities and pray for peace in front of Royal Palace and Wat Phnom. They gathered interviews and reports to show that people are love and want peace. The radio also broadcast by raised up the desire of each party especially in the time of demonstration. “I told my reporter to write down the news that can find out commonalities of both sides and spread out to avoid the conflict, which could be a key in resolving the issue”. She thinks that it's important when we have implemented, or broadcasted because it was a part of responding to the conflict but sometimes it’s not comprehensive and covers all conflict. She promised that she will continue to integrate peacebuilding into her my daily work

Mr.Vann Mouy Makara, News Program Coordinator from SEATV station. Mr. Makara was the participant from first training in Sihaknouk vile. He is the person who involves checking the news before it is released. “He a part of gatekeeping”. He said “I understand the impact and importance in building peace in society, as well as fostering participation and mainstreaming people understand the importance of peace journalism”. He added that " almost of all medias are the lack of ethics and professional, and the people is obsessing with media that do not have professional especially media was generated their idea to take that news for playful fun. The media forgetting to think about bad effect to biodiversity of people living”. For example the rape assault index cases, how the journalists can take these stories to reasoned humor on televisions or radios, gradually mainstreaming it has a negative effect and leading to war journalism. Some Medias and journalists forget to think that all



broadcasts can undermine its stations. For his television now tried to broadcast the news that was brought up the activities of the ruling party, opposition and protesters as well. " Moreover, he encourages the reporters to not try to comment and be more professional. “ At SEATV currently we are trying to change before we are broadcast just only one part as government activities but now we show and broadcast from all parties who involve with the conflict ” he add before end of sharing.

Mr. Mi Vath Reporter from Kampu Chea Thmey Newspaper shared, I reporter that focus on general career and professional to my newspaper. I think that my report can contribute to decreasing violence and make news balance into all type of people. In the past, I think that in general people like to know the war journalism so I need to collect and write to adjust the meaning according to the audience’s demands. . But after I attended with ACT training on Peace Journalism, I tried hard to integrate peace concept to my article even though, I am not the text editor for decision making level. I committed that, I will continue to integrate peace concept to my work.

Mr. Mak Chanden, the director of VOD TV online said that in the past my radio broadcast the news only one side or tries to take hold on the government, but not all news. VOD is trying to respect the journalist code of ethics, to present balanced news and to look for proper source. If the news is politics, it is hard to avoid violence sometime we focus on common citizens who are victims, so that most of the people point that the government is wrong. Furthermore, the government does not respond when questioned by journalists. Currently, the for a news



investigation my colleague tries to call to interview with the government representative or the related person from government for their response to the problems. I think that peace journalism is important for investigative news. For the sensitive news I and my colleague discuss before broadcasting the news. If there are injuries and bleeding we do not show the whole picture on the news as a form of violence could not be showing the face of victim. From the real practice of peace journalism, when we spread out information/news as we respect the code of ethic. There are no comments on peace journalism news but when we release the news shows the violent pictures, we got many comments from the audience, they seem interested with that and shared a lot of their comments. The picture that do not show faces and violent activities seem to be not as interesting to viewers or sometimes it small amount of views or like or comment in my website. Before I release the news I and VOD TV online editor tried to check many times to avoid mistakes. We have regular meeting with my staffs 2 times per-day to update internal work and challenges that all staffs meet.

Mr. Lao Sampor is the director of Cambodia National Radio FM and TVK reporter in Banteay Meanchey province. It is true that his own actions since he attended the peace journalism training are very difference ways from before. During his reporting previously he never thought about solutions or finding the peace solution of each parties. When I wrote the news it was according to 5 W 1 H questions in the breaking news. Sometimes I broadcast war journalism and sometimes I broadcasted the peace journalism news without sense. After I attended the Peace Journalism course, it transformed me to re-think and integrate peace concept to my article news. It isn’t completely 100% yet because Peace Journalism news is needed long time to look for all resources that have involved with and the real cause of conflicts which are available to find the appropriate solution from all parties. After joining the peace journalism training; I shared the knowledge to my colleagues, journalists and promote peace journalism concept with civic and public officials for more understanding on peace education. I will gather lesson and integrate the peace journalism practices in my team work to improve my radio station. In most articles I’d usually mention in land dispute news and Cambodia laborers killed in Thailand and we have cooperated well with news agencies in Thailand in order to seek the sources in order to well writing issues which are shortened the conflict to the way of peace journalism and more good cooperation along Cambodia and Thailand border. As we know the peace journalism is a new way of thinking in Cambodia so it make all peace journalist participants feeling it will be difficult to apply. But what I appreciate is that I can practice this concept for my personal change and especially my own mindset changes. I think, I improved about 70% peace in my mind not full to 100% yet but I will try my best to build more peace inside. I committed that, I will try to manage my anger for leading my institution and also my family.

Mr. MIN Pov is an editor assistant of Voice for Democracy (VOD) radio, he was attended in Peace Journalism training at Sihanoukville prepared by Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT) in 2013. After the training he was practiced and integrated the knowledge to his daily works as well. He shared, "I feel very happy to join with ACT in the peace journalism project. We are aware that some part of VOD is reported on the conflicts that current happen in the society and also hot news as well. But if we want to write Peaceful new the reporter should wrote by involve with all parties and it is the chance for all parties to access balanced information. He added, in the report, I try to avoid flattering word or bad (stringent word) for example; the Prime Minister promised is the false promise. In the report, I tried to search and looking the for proper sources from all parties involved as a way of building peace in the society. "

Mr CHUM Phearum, is the reporter from Derm Ampil radio and newspaper (DAP) base on Sihanoukville. He shared "I applied the peace journalism concepts and content gradually into the press, which I wrote. I think it's a new thing, as before I like taking pictures completely from the real, such as accident and murder in the guesthouse of the foreigner. But after participating of peace journalism training, I tried to take remote danger pictures, if foreigners, I will show a passport or ID card to notify family or people who know them. I will try to carry out peace and respect media code of ethic with continues to reduce violence in society.

Mrs. SORN Socheata, she is producer on women education program at CNC television. She had chance to join with Pace Journalism training in 2013. She shared, "before attending training courses, I never thought about peace journalism. But after joining with ACT course, I am more aware and always shared knowledge to my colleagues and mainstreaming into my present work as well. I had been encouraged colleagues to write the information that would have full meaning to spread out by avoid intimidation and inflated. For example, during the demonstration my television was broadcasted to show all conflict parties as Sam Rainsy demonstrator activist and competence. For photography team they were wraps the blood of the victims, for the rape case, we also did not reveal the names and faces of the victims. She ended that “I hope that what has been studied and shared to my station can help my institutions better than before".

Mr. HANG Chakra, Khmer Mchasrok newspaper editor and vice president of Independent Journalists club. Before attended in Kampong Som province with ACT's his newspaper was broadcast the political propaganda and sometimes it can make conflict with both parties. But after joined with ACT project he had some changes as well: "Most of my reports is related to land disputes, political and social issues. Actually, in the reports that I wrote for my press during the election campaign I integrated peace messages. During that time my media census, land issues report is received a lot of interest from readers. I think my news is neutral for all political parties, the news not make conflict, so means that is on the way to build peace and stability in society. He added that the freedom of the press and independence is very important with more news balance towards peace and reduce poverty in the society.



***Note: Mr. Hang Chakra were sent to jail for a year in 2009-2010 cause published articles against Deputy Prime Minister Sok An was involved in corruption1. He was release by a letter sent by King Norodom Sihamoni to minister of Justice for the council reconsiders the conviction2.

Mr. Morm Moniroth, the reporter of Radio Free Asia based in the Cambodia, he also shared his personal change after being involved with the peace journalism project in 2013. He learned from the project that if we (Journalist) highlight only one side and use of bad word to spread out, it is called violent news. He said if we worry too much about violence or peace in our journalistic practice is not fulfilled, he adding that the media as a mirror for reflection so we can see the real situation that was happened. He stated that “ if journalist can write with proper solution in conclusion, it mean proved to be successful as well, although not think about the word that were used in the report. We tried streaming down on what we want or can be anyone stories I doesn’t care, but all news should have more balance without bias to any other parties or other side. The news is like delicious food without chemical; if the news not put the chemicals, it will become peaceful news.

Mr. Sean Kosal is the reporter from Derm Ampil radio and newspaper base in Phnom Penh. He feels it is very difficult to practice and little integrate and implement the peace journalism to his work. What makes him difficult before his role is focus on court and Social Security report, but then he moved to work in development side. He shared " my impression, I used to work with the team if I'm checking to see which implies violence meaning or swear word, I helped edit or remove it from the news before spreading out. If stories related to rape, I was not trying to show a name or picture clearly. I think the withdrawal of all violent words can be avoided anger and violence embedded.

Ms. An Samnang, news reader from SEATV was shared that: “before I reading the news related with rape case; that the reporter write and I read all as writer written by each name, place and make some analysis of the article that can make audience have emotion by showing the video and the picture of victim without hidden their identify or blank from remote when there is an accident to be a respectful of the victims and in every press release I have never disclosed excessive information , but after attended in peace journalism training I always practice on the peace journalism strategy and journalist code of ethic specially display the real news that happens in society”.

Mr. Um Sopheak from Nob 70 website: I want to share that my website does not focus on political and Land issues; my website is focused on youth. From peace journalism training, I gained much knowledge. I joined with other youth in going for interview to have correct information from real sources and corrected some word that were not appropriate for publishing. For the records and pictures to publication I need to ask permission in advance. If someone does not agree for me to take their picture, I won’t take the picture. And if they don’t want to show their name, in the report release and spread out without the sources. For Example: several months ago I took one topic related with “Youth and Daily Living” where we pointed out on the conflict especially the causes that created the conflict and the personal solutions. I think that they were a part of understanding the causes and the way to reduce the conflict.
