What is the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme? The HRI scheme allows homeowners or landlords claim an income tax credit on repairs, renovations or improvement work carried out on their main home or rental property by HRI qualifying contractors.
The Incentive generally applies to qualifying work carried out and paid for between 25 October 2013 and 31 December 2015 for Homeowners and 15 October 2014 and 31 December 2015 for Landlords. Holiday homes are specifically excluded from this scheme.

What type of works qualify? • Painting and decorating • Extensions• Plastering and rewiring • Attic conversions • Plumbing • Garages • Tiling, bathroom upgrades • Landscaping • Fitted kitchens • Septic tank repair or replacement.The VAT rate on works carried out must be 13.5%.
What is not covered by HRI?Furniture, white goods, carpets and work subject to VAT at 23% are not covered by HRI.
How does it work?Once the job is completed, you pay the contractor in full. You then submit your claim via www.revenue.ie
How is it paid?The 13.5% VAT you pay for the renovation will be refunded by increasing tax credits in tax years 2016 & 2017.
Who can avail of the scheme?Any homeowner/landlord who is up-to-date with their taxes, including the local property tax (LPT). Houses acquired and being prepared and subsequently used as the owner’s principal private residence also qualify. Private residence can include associated gardens and grounds. Remember that the tax credit is only available to the owner occupier.
Who can carry out the work?The contractor who carries out the work must be tax compliant and registered for VAT. They must also provide details of the contract to the Revenue before the job starts and when payment received.
