Greetings,

I hope everyone is well and you and your families have enjoyed the summer. Our staff was very busy over the past few months with travel, recruiting, camps, and pro-fessional development. Hopefully our efforts will help to set the table for a successful pre-season.

Having the students back on campus is great, and allows for all of us to get into a routine while we prepare for the season. As we left Ireland in June, and throughout the past few months, the message to our group was a simple one: Don’t allow it to be an easy summer. We spoke extensively about our expectations of our returning play-ers as well as new faces (5 first year players). This work ethic and devotion over the summer will be our foundation as we begin to prepare for the 2012-13 season.

As a coach, in the off-season you are often asked; “How good are you going to be this year?”. This is a very simple question, with a very difficult answer. “I really don’t know.” Anyone can guess, but as we told our team, this is a question we need to an-swer together over the course of this year. Our guys do understand the program they are part of and all of the work that past players have put in; resulting in the name and reputation that Stonehill has today. As we approach all that we do in the classroom, on the court, and within the Stonehill community, we will continue to stress what needs to be done in order to have a successful year.

We do have some alumni events coming up, in particular our annual alumni game is right around the corner on September 22nd! Hopefully we will see many of you there to either play, watch, or simply share some past stories about your respective times as a player at Stonehill.

As always, please feel free to stop by the office at anytime, or contact us to simply say hello. I know many of you often come across young men with the potential to play at the next level. If anyone has any future players to recommend, we will cer-tainly follow up.

2012-13 Stonehill Roster

For the third year in a row, the Stonehill

Basketball Alumni game went into Overtime. After a

back and forth battle down the stretch, 40 minutes

was not enough to settle to score. It took an extra two

overtime periods to reach the final verdict. At the end

of the first overtime, Sean Nelson ‘06 missed a wide-

open 3 point shot to seal the deal. The miss gave

former teammate Marquis Taylor ‘06 and his team a

chance to close it out at the end of the second OT

Period. With 3 seconds remaining, Marquis found

himself in the baseline corner closely guarded by

Patrick Lee ‘11. Marquis was able to clear a little bit of

space from Patrick and hit a turnaround fade-away 3

from the corner to seal it 65-62.

It was another great event with a lot of stories

and memories shared. Rumors have spread that a

re-match is in the making. We will get you the details

soon.

Stonehill Gives Primary Logo a Facelift

New primary athletics logo New secondary mark

EASTON, Mass. (July 25, 2012) – Stonehill College is pleased to announce a redesign of its primary athletics logo. The logo redesign was conducted in an effort to create a more modern “Ace,” the official mascot of the College, and will include a full mascot makeover at the beginning of the 2012-13 academic year.

“This is an exciting day for Skyhawk athletics,” said Brendan J. Sullivan, Director of Intercolle-giate Athletics at the College. “Our tradition of excellence at Stonehill continues to grow and de-velop every season, and our Skyhawk identity evolves with it. We are thrilled with our newest logo and feel that it is a great representation of our athletic tradition and I would like to thank those involved with making this new logo a reality.”

In addition to the new logo, “Ace” is undergoing a makeover this summer and is expected to be unveiled at the start of the academic year. Details for the debut of the new “Ace” will be announced at a later date. Courtesy of: stonehillskyhawks.com

"It's terrific,'' said McLaughlin. "They have the passion for basket-ball. When you have a long college career, it's sometimes hard to keep that passion when it's over.

"I don't think you can calculate the doors it can open for Andre going over there. He's someone who came to Stonehill without a scholarship and then becomes the MVP of the Northeast-10 tournament. He's not going to be making millions or play in the NBA, but the experience and the people he'll meet is going to be great.

"Patrick is one of the smartest play-

ers I've ever coached. His father has

been a coach. It's definitely in the

blood. You could tell he wanted to

do it.''

McLaughlin received a phone call asking if he had any candidates for Ireland's "Sports Changes Life'' pro-gram, and Tongo was immediately interested. He had been weighing the possibility of hiring an agent to pursue overseas playing opportuni-ties.

After graduation, Tongo and the entire 2011-12 Stonehill team trav-eled throughout Ireland in late May and early June, winning five exhibi-tion games, and he was enthused about going back there this semes-ter.

He will have the chance not only to

continue playing basketball but to

go after a Master's degree and work

in coaching.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to continue playing,'' said Tongo, who led Stonehill in scoring last season. "As the years go on, the deadline of me playing basketball is definitely

EASTON, Mass. - They were part of the winningest class in the histo-ry of Stonehill College men's basket-ball with a 92-31 record.

Andre Tongo and Patrick Lee had plenty of positive times during their four-year stay, capping it off by helping the Skyhawks reach the semifinal round of the NCAA Div. 2 tournament last March.

When that magical run and their Stonehill careers came to an end with a 71-66 loss to 12th-ranked Western Washington, Tongo and Lee wanted to keep their association with basketball alive.

That goal has been achieved by both Tongo and Lee, who will still be in-volved with basketball – while sepa-rated by the Atlantic Ocean.

Tongo leaves Saturday night for Ire-

land where he will be playing in the

country's SuperLeague in addition

to pursuing a Master's degree in

international management at the

University of Galway.

He will be also coaching at-risk teen-agers with the Galway-based Titans as part of the "Sports Changes Life'' program.

Lee will not be leaving Stonehill as he has been hired as an assistant

coming up. I just want to ride it out as long as possible.

"I've been playing since third grade. It'd be kind of hard for me to stop. I'm going to keep going as long as I can, until someone says that you're not good enough to play anymore.''

"I've always had the dream. It didn't matter how much I got paid to play. The fact that I'm living my dream a little bit feels great. Hopefully, I'll be able to showcase my talent and put Stonehill on the map over there.''

Lee, who will be taking garduate courses, joins the coaching staff after being a captain with Tongo and Sean Lowry this past season.

"It's something I pretty much had as a top option for awhile,'' said Lee of coaching. "I worked at camps and enjoyed working with kids. I love bas-ketball. I wanted to stick around that.

"I'm sure the first couple of weeks or

the first month, I'll be making a tran-

sition. But I was a senior captain and

now I'm an assistant coach, so I'll still

be helping the guys out, just not play-

ing.''
