It’s hard to believe we are nearing the end of 2018. I’m sure most of you also feel this way! There are always mixed emotions when you reflect back on the year and look forward in anticipation to the upcoming year. Knowing that life is full of up and downs, good times and not so good times, what makes the journey worth it, is the relationships we have with one another. We are grateful to all our residents, families, volunteers, employees, providers, and partners within this great community.

Thank you for being a part of our Stonehill family! Happy Holidays!

With December upon us we are welcomed everywhere we go by the sound of Christmas carols, the glow of lights, and the giggles of children anxiously anticipating their visit from Santa. What a wonderful time of the year. We celebrate our faith and our families this time of year and we take quiet moments to count our blessings. In the Development office we are blessed this time of year by the generosity of donors, year-end is often a time when people choose to make their gifts to their selected charities and we are so grateful for those who choose Stonehill. For 40 years the generosity of others has sustained us, made it possible to provide a full continuum of services and serve others regardless of financial situation. In the last fiscal year, Stonehill was able to provide over $633,000 in charity care, which is a true blessing.

We thank those who gave of their time, talents, and treasures to support the Stonehill mission and we thank those who choose to call Stonehill home. We know you have a choice in who you select for services for yourself or a loved one and we are honored that you choose Stonehill. For those who offered prayers for our mission, our staff, and the residents, we thank you. As you celebrate your own Christmas traditions and your faith we welcome you to visit the newly renovated Stonehill San Damiano Chapel. All are welcome. This is one more blessing we received this year, a new space for Stonehill residents, staff, and visitors to live out their faith.

What’s your favorite Christmas tradition? Each year I bake sugar cookies with my children. Layney is 9 and Landon is 5. They love to bake with me. We carefully prepare and chill the dough and then the fun begins! You can see the excitement in their eyes as they take turns rolling out the dough and cutting it out with the cookie cutter of their choice—trees, angels, stars that will all eventually be frosted with homemade powdered sugar frosting. Yum! My mouth is watering as I think about this delicious treat. As you think about your own Christmas memories I hope you are filled with the joy of the season. And I also welcome you to take part in the many activities offered at Stonehill, maybe you’ll start a new tradition!

May I take this opportunity to wish you a Merry and blessed Christmas!

Joy and Blessings,

Thank you to all who stopped by our table at the Christmas Fair. And thanks to the Auxiliary Members who volunteered to work. We loved seeing everyone at the event!

There are lots of great gifts available, see us in the Coffee Shop on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:30-2:30 p.m. to make a purchase.

Another big thanks to all the veterans and family members who joined us on November 9th for the Salute to Veterans organized by the Stonehill Activities Department. We were honored to serve the many veterans at Stonehill and recognize them for their contributions. Everyone enjoyed Becky’s cake!

We hope to see you at our Luau party in January!

Merry Christmas!

Thank you to all who chose to support Stonehill on Giving Tuesday!

Your gifts help provide resident activities throughout the year including entertainers, crafts, games, nail and spa carts, popcorn,

bingo, outings, and more!

Special Thanks to the Dubuque Racing Association

A $3,700 grant from the Dubuque Racing Association was used to purchase two Rock n’ Go wheelchairs for Stonehill residents. The chairs provide more functionality than regular wheelchairs, allowing residents to rock and recline. They are expected to be especially helpful for residents with symptoms of dementia including

restlessness and anxiety. Thank you to Dubuque Racing Association for helping us provide the best possible care for our residents!

Home for the Holidays

Charles Dickens, in his classic, A Christmas Carol, wrote about the kind of Christmas he loves most—joyous family parties with mistletoe hanging from the ceiling, cheerful carols, games, dances and gifts, delicious feasts of roast goose, plum pudding, fresh breads, all enjoyed in front of a blazing Yule log. The key experience for Dickens was being home with family for Christmas.

Today, many people love most the kind of Christmas celebrated with great family gatherings, seasonal drinks and dishes, favorite homemade foods, prayerful worship services, visits to Nativity/manger scenes, and St. Nicholas gift-giving. Like Dickens, the key experience for many is being home with family for Christmas.

Going home to family and Christmas belong together. The truth is, “There’s no place like home for the holidays!” At home we feel safe, secure, accepted, and loved.

Many of us within the community of Stonehill will be going home for Christmas. Of course, some will not. No doubt, we have all heard the classic definitions of home: “Home is where the heart is!” and “Home is where you hang your hat!” If those are true, then all of us as part of the community of Stonehill can say, even sing, “I’ll be home for Christmas!”

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus came to our earthly home to show us the way to our heavenly home. Each one of us contributes to creating that “going-home-for-Christmas” experience for residents living within Stonehill. It actually is their home. Having personal items and pictures from their past creates a more home-like atmosphere. But when we share moments spent with each other where we sense real gratitude and appreciation for one another, we create home. When we know we are gifted with the

presence of Jesus, our Savior, and the presence of others who love and care for us, we experience being at home with one another—safe, secure, accepted and loved!

When we give, it is because we desire to share our joy and happiness with another; it is because we want to show we care; we want to unite with a person in a bond of dignity, respect, and acceptance. When we commit to relationships of trust and caring, then we have real heart and reason to say, and even sing, “I’ll be home for Christmas.” Give the gift of your loving self to others this Christmas and create for them the spirit of truly being home. St. Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first Nativity scene on Christmas eve in the year 1223. He did this not with statues inside a church but with hay and living animals in a hilltop grove. In the spirit of St. Francis, visit a nativity/manger scene this Christmas and appreciate the poverty, humility, and simplicity of Christ’s birth. It’s an experience of being home with the Lord—safe, secure, accepted, and loved. Merry Christmas!
