Easter Egg HuntEaster comes early this year:

We will have our annual Easter Egg Hunt this year on Saturday, March 23rd. We’ll meet at the Fern Bluff Park on Park Valley Drive, next to Fern Bluff Elementary and the tennis courts, no later than 9:45am. The hunt will being promptly at 10:00am. If you would like to volunteer to stuff eggs, hide eggs, help serve lunch or monitor the Bounce House, please email or call Laura Kouns at [email protected] or 733-1659.

Rain Out date is Sunday March 24.

Unfortunately, these past few months have seen an increase in vandalism, particularly breaking into cars—many of which have been left unlocked. In some cases, items have been stolen; in nearly all instances, papers and contents have been either strewn around or removed from the vehicles and found as far as several blocks away. Residents throughout Stone Canyon have filed police reports, but recent activity has centered around Sea Ash Circle and Sunburst Pkwy. Residents on Bar Harbor Bend have also reported suspicious groups of what appear to be young men or teenagers moving up and down the street in the early hours. Williamson County Police contact info is included at the end of this column. If/when you or your neighbors see anything remotely suspicious, it is vital to file a report immediately with the Police.

By the time you read this, our Texas Spring should have definitely sprung! Hopefully, between Mother Nature’s intermittent moisture and our individual watering processes, we’re all making plans to get our gardens started and prep our lawns for a healthy and colorful season. Our Yard of the Month cycle will also be starting. Each year, more and more residents have raised the bar for recognition. Jump on board to keep Stone Canyon beautiful. April’s newsletter will provide more info on the committee’s charter, guidelines and timelines.

We’re also looking for new residents to join our committee or to serve as substitutes to replace departing members. Ours has to be the most enjoyable committee of all. To drive through Stone Canyon’s neighborhoods each month, soak up everyone’s garden artistry and then—best of all—notify 8 homeowners their yards have been selected as the month’s Best! Our most difficult task is selecting only 8 from the 1101 yards in Stone Canyon. If you’re interested, please contact either Joanie Brown or Amelia Dansby:

Reminder: Do remain aware of anything or anyone “out of place” in your neighborhood. Notice if anyone appears to be paying unusual attention to your habits or those of your neighbors. Touch base with your neighbors, especially get to know your new ones--keep each other up to date on community issues and concerns, especially those that are safety-related.* “Word of mouth” among our residents has proven to be the fastest and most effective means of bringing attention to and sharing information about what’s going on. Our Neighborhood Watch network is THE major weapon we can use against anyone who threatens our community. It’s our way of staying aware and keeping our neighborhood the safe place we want and need it to be for each other and our families.*Note: Not all safety concerns involve people from outside our

community. Neighborhood safety also includes reporting to our county Sheriff’s department, anyone or anything that has the potential to harm people or pets. Some of our residents have reported use of BB guns, apparently causing the death of at least one newborn owl. Other incidents have resulted in BB pellets being fired into planters and other items close to windows and doors. This type of activity is especially dangerous in a heavily populated community of homes situated as close to each other as ours.

Lt David also stresses: first and foremost consider your own safety; don’t confront unless you have to. DO call police. Even if a suspected perpetrator is gone, it’s necessary to file a police report. If possible, please notify your Block Captain and your neighbors so the word can be passed through our N.Watch network as quickly as possible.

Doors & Windows• All exterior doors should be solid core or of metal construction.• All entry doors should be equipped with a good quality deadbolt

lock having a minimum of a one inch throw.• A good quality double cylinder deadbolt lock should be used if

there is glass within 40 inches of the lock. If using such a lock, be certain a key is readily available in case of emergency. In all cases, use a heavy duty strike plate with Number 12 gauge 3” woodscrews.

• All exit doors without side hinges should have their hinges pinned. Install a peephole with at least a 180 degree viewing area.

• Secure all sliding doors with an anti-lifting device and a secondary locking device, and install secondary locking devices on all windows.

Exterior & Landscape• Install lighting in areas around doors, walkway, and driveways.• Use inexpensive timers to automatically turn the lights on and

off at dusk and dawn. Do not leave ladders or tools outside. They cana ssist someone in gaining entry.

• Be certain your shrubs/trees do not hide your address & it is visible so if necessary, emergency personnel can find your home quickly.

Alarm Systems• Chose ar eputable, well established company.• Learn how to use your alarms system properly to reduce false

alarms (fines can be assessed for false alarms).• Do not write your alarm code/password on or near the alarm

keypad. Put a warning sign on windows and entrances.• Be certain your alarm call-back list is up-to-date.• Additional Information• Acknowledge all callers through locked doors and/or your

peephole.• Keep doors, windows and garage doors closed and locked, even

when you’re at home. Draw all curtains and shades at night to prevent viewing from the street.

• When traveling, keep your home looking lived-in by having the grass cut, mail and newspapers picked up and lights turned on and off with at imer.

• Before moving into a new house, re-key or change all exterior locks and also change the code to your garage opener.

• Engrave valuables with your Texas driver license (preceded by the letters “TX”). Engravers are inexpensive and are available in hardware departments.
