Neighborhood Newsletter

All Of Youreally came through this year! Breakfast with Santa was a great success, more

than 100 families came to see Santa and the choirs from Fern Bluff Elementary, Chisholm Trail Middle School and Round Rock High School.

The neighborhood joined in with Fern Bluff Elementary again this year by adopting families who need a little bit of help, collecting items for Brown Santa, the Nursing Home and the Round Rock Serving Center. The total collected this year was approximately $3000 along with many gift items. We supported eleven families in total. All of the families that we supported either have kids at Fern Bluff Elementary, or they are a part of our school community in some way. The staff at the school really embraced this project when it appeared the giving was down. They taught lessons to the kids about the difference between needs and wants and collected money from their classes to buy something off of the tree instead of doing a class-wide book exchange. Many of our kids brought in their allowance, several teachers matched what their class brought in, and some staff members recruited donations from their personal families that don’t even live in this neighborhood. Toward the end of the collection period, the donations really came in, which allowed us to share several loads of toys and supplies and approx $600 worth of gift cards to assist the homeless families at Round Rock High School.

Isn’t it wonderful to live in a neighborhood that has so many caring and giving people! Thanks to each of you!

Yard of the Month'sHoliday Lights & Decorations Recognition

By Joanie Brown and Amelia DansbyAs noted in our January newsletter, the deadline for submitting articles

for each month’s newsletter falls on the 15th of the previous month. Since nominating and final voting weren’t scheduled to take place until the week following January’s deadline, we had to delay announcing our winners until this month. FYI: It’s never been easy for committee members to recognize 5 “winners” from the 12 nominated homes; however, this year’s task was particularly challenging. Buckets of long-overdue rain caused blown circuit breakers and few Christmas lights. But, on Tuesday, December 20th, the night sky was clear and Stone Canyon’s lights were brilliant. Thanks to everyone for creating great “eye candy” for all of us: Homes resembling Courier-and-Ives greeting cards; others, like crystal Gingerbread Houses; then, the fun, colorful child-magnets with animated toys and runways for Santa’s sleigh; and, the Stable and Manger tableaus to remind us of why we celebrate Christmas.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHby Joanie BrownIf you’re reading this and saying: “Hey, I’ve already seen this before,

and before that…” well, you’re right. That’s because I’m asking (begging? nagging?) yet again for additional volunteers to cover Stone Canyon’s streets as Watch Captains. The message hasn’t changed, the need remains the same: we need your help! Our Neighborhood Watch can’t work unless we have enough street coverage. Stone Canyon has 1101 homes, spread out along approximately 42 streets—many long enough to require 2 or 3 people to split their street into sections. If we don’t have enough street reps, each with their own list of e-mail addresses and phone numbers gathered for their neighbors, we’ll remain extremely limited in disseminating information quickly.

What will take the most time is initially touching base with the residents on your street to let them know you’re their Neighborhood Watch Representative/Block Captain, and asking their permission to collect their contact info to use only for Neighborhood Watch purposes. You may wish to assure them that their info will be kept confidential. The list you compile for your street will be for your use only; no requirement to share with any committee or Board member. When either a Board member or the Neighborhood Watch committee chairperson receives a safety bulletin from law enforcement, that message will be forwarded to you as your street’s rep; and you will be requested to pass it on to your contact list. If you are hesitating because you work outside your home but would be able to receive Neighborhood Watch bulletins while at your office, it should take a minimum amount of time to forward those alerts.

I’m coordinating with the Sheriff’s Office Neighborhood Watch rep to schedule a time for him to meet with us soon. He’ll be able to explain how other communities work their programs, answer our questions, and share ideas on what might work best for Stone Canyon. I’ll keep you advised as things move forward.

Neighborhood Watch is a major weapon we residents can use against anyone who enters our neighborhoods with wrong intentions. It’s our way of staying aware and looking out for each other and our families. Please join us in keeping Stone Canyon “plugged in” and safe. We NEED your help. Thanks.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

PARIS POTATOES• 5 cups potatoes, diced in ½” cubes

• 1 C sour cream

• 2 C creamed cottage cheesee

• 1 C green onions & tops, finely chopped

• ½ tsp. garlic salt, optional

• salt & pepper to taste

• 1 C shredded cheddar cheese

Parcook diced potatoes in boiling water until crispy tender. Drain, and combine potatoes with all ingredients except cheese. Baked in buttered 13 x 9” baking dish at 350° for 30 minutes or until sauce is bubbly. Sprinkle with cheese during last 10 minutes of baking time.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth & What To Do About It

Do you experience discomfort in your teeth? Do you find it difficult to drink icy or hot beverages? You may have a case of sensitive teeth. Luckily, it’s very treatable. Find out what causes sensitive teeth and how to change your habits to avoid sensitivity.

What does it mean to have sensitive teeth?If you experience pain or discomfort when consuming foods or

beverages that are hot, cold, sweet, or sour; when brushing or flossing; or even when breathing sharp, cold air, you may have sensitive teeth.

What is the reason for sensitive teeth?COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTH SENSITIVITY:

•Over-brushing – brushing your teeth too hard may wear down enamel or irritate the gum line, causing it to recede and expose the tooth’s sensitive roots.

• Crackedteeth – a crack or chip in your tooth may expose the underlying dentin or may fill with bacteria from plaque, causing the nerve to inflame.

• Teethgrinding – over time, grinding or clenching your teeth can erode enamel and expose dentin.

•Gumdisease – gum disease leads to tooth decay which breaks down enamel; gum disease can also lead to infection which may attack the tooth’s roots or cause the gum line to recede.

• Toothwhitening – using products with peroxide or baking soda can seriously aggravate exposed roots or dentin.

• Age – studies have shown that tooth sensitivity occurs most often in people between the ages of 25 and 30.

It is possible to experience tooth sensitivity after routine dental procedures such as the placement of a filling or crown, tooth restoration, or even tooth cleaning. Such sensitivity is temporary; if it does not cease after four to six weeks please consult your dentist.

How should I take care of my teeth if they are sensitive?Tooth sensitivity is very treatable, no matter what the cause.Here are a few remedies you can take advantage of at home:

Try a desensitizing toothpaste which contains chemicals that block sensations like hot and cold from reaching the nerves in your teeth. Use a soft-bristledtoothbrush that will be gentler on both your teeth and gums. Switch to afluoridemouthwash. Avoidacidicfoods such as tea, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Maintain goodoralhygiene by brushing twice every day and flossing once daily.

Depending on the cause and severity of your sensitivity, you may benefit from professional treatment. If you suffer from sensitive teeth, please be sure to contact your dentist. We can set up an appointment to discuss what is bothering you and determine the best way to address the problem.
