Emergency lighting is designed to illuminate automatically the escape route (i.e. staircases, landings, passageways etc.) upon failure of the supply to the normal artifi cial lighting. The emergency lighting must comply with BS 5266.

Maintained/Non-maintained SystemsNon-maintained systems are used in buildings with a limited occupation time, such as offi ces and shops, and only operate when the power fails. The Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document B recommends that doors designed as fi re-resisting doors should be marked with the appropriate mandatory fi re safety sign. As a guide, the recommended fi xing height for door fi tted signs is 1500mm above fl oor level. See page 3 for more details.

1. In the event of fire it is the first duty of all concerned to prevent injury or loss of life.

2. For this purpose, you should make certain that you are familiar with all the means of escape in case of fire. Since there may be an opportunity, in the event of a fire, for you to attack it with the nearest fire extinguisheror hose reel, you should also be familiar with how to use them.

3. IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE OR one is reported to you, you should -

SOUND THE ALARM

4. The Principal or the authorised deputy is responsible for ensuring that the Fire Brigade is called immediately on the sounding, of the fire alarm.

5. Immediately after the fire alarm has been sounded, you should -

.1 see that any doors immediately surrounding the fire situation are closed, and

.2 escort persons from the area of the incident, in accordance with the detailed fire drill procedure, ensuring that all doors through which you pass are closed after you, and

.3 when the persons arrive at the assembly point, which is call the roll and notify the Principal at once of the result (e.g. all persons presentor one missing, and the name and likely location, as the case may be).

Fire Extinguisher Identifi cation to BS EN3 and BS 7863

Know Your Fire Extinguishers

Under BS EN 3 operative from the 1st January 1997, all new certifi ed fi re extinguishers used in European Union countries must feature RED bodies. In line with familiar UK practice, BS 7863 allows manufacturers to affi x coloured identifi cation panels on or above the operating instructions covering no more than 5% of the body surface area and visible through a horizontal arc of 180 degrees when the extinguisher is mounted. Wellglow Lightsticks

In situations of emergency evacuation, especially when confronted by power failure, a way guidance system using photoluminescent tapes, signs and markers will help to indicate clearly defi ned escape routes, saving critical time for the evacuation of the building.

BS 5266-6: 1999, is a Code of Practice for non-electrical low mounted way guidance marking using a photoluminescent system. It recommends how to plan, design, install and maintain the system when used in conjunction with powered emergency lighting. The use of this standard, combined with BS ISO 16069:2004, Graphical symbols-Safety signs - Safety way guidance systems and BS 5499-4: 2000, Code of Practice for escape route signs, gives the answers to most questions that could be asked from those contemplating installing a photoluminescent way guidance system.


Note:For a satisfactory performance, The installation of a photoluminescent way guidance system does not replace the use of powered emergency lighting when this is required, but compliments its existence
