Equality in Sweden

According to the Global Gender Gap Report issued annually by the World Economic Forum, Sweden is one of the world leaders in equality between the sexes. Both women and men are entitled to paren-tal leave, women’ salaries amount to about 93 percent of mens’ and many spouses. Of course, equality covers more than gender gaps; it is about offering everyone the same chances regardless of sex, ethnic origin, religion or other beliefs, disability, sexual orientation or age. Sweden has a long history of promoting equal rights for all through legisla-tion and by openly taking a stand against all kinds of discrimination. This is why many Swedes react very strongly against the appearance of xenophobic parties on the political scene and why racist demonstra-tions are always met with strong opposition.
