Co-educational day and boarding school for children aged 3-13+

Somborne Primary School to be; Resilient, Collaborative, Resourceful, Creative and Spiritual.During spring term, we have focused on resilience and collaboration with a noticeable shift in children’s attitudes to their work, to making mistakes and to learning from each other, all of which is raising their attainment and progress to higher levels.

In the Easter story, we studied how Jesus was a resilient person and year 3/4 wrote beautiful acrostic poems around his resilience on the cross. Most importantly, we considered the messages we can take from his resilience and how to apply them to our own lives.

I wonder how many times in a day we are all resilient or collaborative as adults?

Emma JefferiesDeputy Head teacher

What a term! We have been extremely busy at King’s

Somborne Primary School this last term as we really dug deep to find out what makes a good learner. The children, staff and governors have been exploring the values which lie behind our school’s vision statement of ‘Everyone achieving their best’ – what is it that our children need to really achieve their best, regardless of circumstance? An important question for all of us in education is how do we prepare our children for jobs that don’t exist yet or technology that is yet to be developed?

We have redefined our core values and believe that these 5 values will provide children from our school with a solid foundation for their lives. Embedded in each of these values is the need to be respectful and independent. We want children from King’s

The Houghton Trail“IT WAS A SUPER WAY TO START THE SUMMER”

One of the many warm and delightful messages of thanks

we received after the Houghton Trail on Sunday 10th April was 'it was a super way to start the summer'. A record turnout of 301 runners, walkers and cyclists rolled into this beautiful little village to enjoy another trail around the Test Valley in the most glorious and unbroken sunshine. Bob, Lucy, Fiona and Rod send a massive “thank you” to everyone who supported this and raised £3,100.00 for the Houghton All Saints Church. The turnout of cheery volunteers to help on the course, at the start and finish, baking delicious cakes, managing the refreshments, taking photographs, managing the time-keepers... the list is too long to write. Special thanks go to the Stockbridge Scouts for volunteering their services. We had the pleasure once more of Dickie Davies starting the event for us.

Congratulations to all the finishers and our two course record holders, Matthew King from Winchester who won the 11K Trail Run in 40:54 and to Christopher Clark from Andover who broke his own course record and won the 31K Trail Cycle in 1:06:01. The 4K Fun Run was won by Wiltshire father and son Peter and Riley Booth in 18:04 and the 14K Cycle was won by Jonathan Brown from Houghton in 50:06. A full list of results and photos are on the website www.houghton-trail-event.org.uk.

Emma Wightman of the Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice is one of our main contributors in several aspects of this event, including a spot prize and financial contributions. While Mark Stockwell, also of the Practice, was generously donating

massages, Emma was on the lookout for anyone needing First Aid. Her husband Rob and father-in-law Mark took part in the 11K run, finishing in a very respectable 1:06:48. Rob was particularly keen to lay to rest the ghost of a bad experience from a previous half marathon which left him very unwell indeed. Happily he did not require any treatment from his wife after crossing the Houghton Trail finish line where Stockbridge’s Linda Shepherd of our exceptionally generous supporter, The Trophy Box, had the pleasure of handing him his medal!

Hearty thanks go to our other sponsors and contributors who take away the bulk of the cost of organising this event: Hobbs the Printers in Totton; Reg Goodwin Website Management; Caroline Hopper and Gill Baker’s expert photographic services; Up & Running, Southampton and Hildon Water in Broughton. Our spot prizes were generously supported by The Boot Inn, Houghton; John Robinson the Butcher, Beccy’s Fruit & Veg; Broughton Crafts, Stockbridge Primary School and The Three Cups Inn all of Stockbridge; The Museum of Army Flying; Horsebridge Station, near Houghton and the Odeon Cinema in Southampton. Other support was gratefully received from The River Dental and & Cosmetic Clinic, Chapple Scaffolding, the Physical Training team at the Army Air Corps Middle Wallop, The Stockbridge Pharmacy, Elliott Brothers and Solent Cleaners of Romsey and Saucony Sport in Portsmouth.

Next year’s event will take place on Sunday 29th April 2012.

mitch's Freestyle yogaAt 6'6" and with a

strong masculine body, Mitch previously

had a successful career in the military. This gave him the opportunity to play lots of sports, to compete in adventurous training and excel at Rugby; hardly the yoga type. About 15 years ago and reaching 40 Mitch found himself full of aches and pains and any flexibility he had once possessed had gone and he felt old and worn out. He realised he had to make some adjustments to the way he was treating his body. Not having considered yoga as a manly activity, Mitch was persuaded by a friend to attend a yoga class. He was surprised at how good he felt stretching and breathing properly and how it actually made him feel stronger and old injuries went away. He quickly realised the many benefits in gaining core strength, flexibility and balance in his body; there was also the added benefit of feeling more relaxed and calm in his mind. Overall, yoga has transformed him and he now feels much healthier and fitter in mind and body. Having transformed himself through Yoga, Mitch particularly likes to encourage

men to experience what yoga can offer. Mitch is a Yoga Alliance teacher, dedicating his life to teaching his unique freestyle yoga to a wide spectrum of students, both men and women of all abilities and ages. The classes are designed to encourage students to explore and express themselves through movement, breath and body to rejuvenate and transform on every level. A professional and mature, exciting and inspirational yoga teacher, Mitch's passion for yoga has taken him all over the world to teach on yoga holidays and retreats running his fun and rewarding Freestyle Yoga.

Mitch has several yoga holidays this summer, the first in France in rural Charente at Les Passeroses from 4th – 11th June. Cost is £490 plus flights (includes full board).Further holidays planned for the year are Turkey in August and Andalucia in September and South Africa next February. His engaging classes will empower your body and lift your soul, whoever you are. Laugh, move, breathe, feel revitalised and happy and be ready for life .

Wind in the Willows

littleton allotmentOFFICIAL OPENING OF LITTLETON PRESCHOOL

GARDEN AND ALLOTMENT

The official opening of the Littleton Pre-school garden and allotment by

Mrs Lynn Laver, deputy head, Sparsholt School took place at the Millennium Memorial Hall, The Hall Way, Littleton at 10.30am on Thursday 31st March. Littleton pupils were able to get to grips with a full sized tractor, donated for the morning by Sparsholt College.

The garden and allotment will enable pupils to take advantage of the surrounding open space while simultaneously fulfilling requirements of the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stages curriculum. These include being able to recognise changes that happen to their bodies when they are active and to handle tools and malleable materials safely and with increasing control. Lynn Laver is the daughter of Littleton community member, the late Mrs Wiggle, who had supported a garden for the children for some time.

The foundations were laid for the garden and allotment in 2010 when pre-school supervisor Mrs Carol Mortimer and her staff recognised that learning through outdoor play was becoming increasingly

important to pupils. After asking the Littleton Parish Council for use of the surrounding space and an initial grant from Counsellor Charlotte Bailey, plans came to life. Littleton Pre-school has since been able to realise its outdoor ambitions thanks to generous donations from:

• B and W Plant Hire & Sales Limited • Paul Findlay• Holmes & Sons Nursery • Soils Limited• James Oliver Conservatories • Sydenhams• Jewson Builders Merchants • The Hairy Pot Plant Company• Littleton Parish Council

Mrs Carol Mortimer, supervisor, Littleton Pre-school commented: “We are hugely privileged to have access to so much outdoor space at Littleton and have made great progress since the garden and allotment were originally conceived. Having the new

area will not only help our children make sense of plants and vegetables and how they grow, but they’ll also be able to share wonders of the natural world with each other – all while learning and having fun outdoors.

“We want to keep our area as natural as possible to allow the children to use their imagination to create and change the space for themselves on a continuing basis. We welcome any help that community members can give us, whether it’s a financial donation, by donating spare plants and gardening tools or simply by coming along and sharing skills for an hour with the children on a sunny day!”

If you are able to donate anything large or small to Littleton Pre-school, or are interested in finding out more about a place for your child at the pre-school, please email us at: [email protected].

Audiences at their three performances were delighted by a highly enjoyable production which demonstrated great teamwork in all departments.

Despite the small stage we enjoyed river and canal bank scenes, wild woods and glades, a courtroom, dungeon, gypsy camp and Toad Hall. From the

arrival of Rattie in his boat the skill of the backstage workers who had designed, constructed and painted the sets was very clear. Frequent scene changes were managed swiftly and quietly and the lighting and music were also very effective.

Creating the humanised versions of so many animals was achieved by excellent costumes and make up. Perhaps Rattie’s tail was not quite so effective and I did wonder if a blue clad Mrs Otter really worked but the overall standard was remarkable and much admired.

The team work on stage was

of a similar high standard. The director Lyn Woods deserves great credit for the movement achieved throughout the production and the careful arrangements of groups on the small stage. Times when sections of dialogue threatened to slow down the pace of the action were interspersed with more lively interludes. Whether eccentric judges in the courtroom or a charming gypsy dance, these worked well. Productions with a wide age range must also be difficult but a high standard of teamwork was achieved by all. This showed well as Garry Collins as Chief Weasel, gave a great performance as he led with panache his young weasel gang of totally in character youngsters. A delightful cameo performance by Peta Watson, most ably supported by Sophie Read was also very effective.

Acting parts based on a duality,

part English chap, part animal make serious demands on any actor so praise must go to all who met the challenge. Outstanding here was Linda Cardigan who exuded ‘moliness’ throughout. Jeremy Quitmen in the difficult part of Toad was able to bring out the pathos beneath Toad’s ebullient and irrepressible nature. Perhaps however, Badger could have been rescued from some of the repetition in his part which hovers on that dangerous line between the endearing and the irritating.

Wind in the Willows does have some pantomime features and how could I close without mentioning Dobbin the horse. This handsome creature was very skilfully manipulated so well done to Laura and Amy. The company provided an evening of great entertainment. We look forward to their next production

The 2011 Winchester Festival programme has been announced. A specially commissioned Fanfare will launch a ten day celebration of music, literature and theatre when the Winchester

Festival brings a wealth of top performers and authors to the city in July.

This year’s programme blends the inspirational talent of youth with the thought-provoking insight of maturity through more than 30 events in Winchester and Alresford.Festival goers can enjoy a lunchtime recital in the Young Musicians Series; take in an art exhibition; exercise their minds with the likes of economist Will Hutton and broadcaster Peter Snow; then enjoy evening entertainment as diverse as saxophonist Jan Gabarek with The Hilliard Ensemble and Radio 4 stalwart Barry Cryer in an evening of ‘sit-down’ comedy.

The baton for this year’s opening concert in the Cathedral on Friday 1 July has been handed to Tom Seligman, director of the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. A Festival Fanfare

by renowned brass composer Jock McKenzie will herald Mahler’s mighty Resurrection Symphony played by the county’s finest young musicians to mark the centenary of Mahler’s death.

Other musical must-hears include trumpeter Alison Balsom, ground breaking early music specialists Galan, jazz singer/songwriter Kathleen Willison, the Ashton Singers and the Endellion String Quartet who will be joined

by poet Wendy Cope as narrator in Roxanna Panufnik’s recent composition The Audience.

W I n C H E S T E RFEST I Val 2011

This year’s literary stage embraces everything from religion to the secret services; European history to the state of the nation as seen through the eyes of authors including Melvyn Bragg, John Julius Norwich and Peter Hennessy. Cultural food for thought will be provided by the memoirs of well-travelled cookery author Josceline Dimbleby.

Actors taking to the Festival stage include Robert Powell and Elizabeth Garvie in A Celebration of Jane Austen, and the ever-popular Festival Players under the direction of Ron James who has once again delved deep into the archives to tell the unlikely tale of Winchester’s 19th century battle for sanitation.

Audience participation is the order of a Come and Sing Day with choral composer John Rutter, but contemplation is all that’s required for the annual Schools Art Exhibition and gallery events including the astonishing work of internationally acclaimed Chinese artist Qu Lei Lei whose recent solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing attracted up to 6,000 visitors each day.

Public booking for all events opens on Tuesday 26 April. For further information pick up a brochure or visit the Festival website at www.winchesterfestival.co.uk The Winchester Cathedral Box Office dedicated booking line number is: 01962 857 276.

Call for Test Valley electors to vote on the 5th may

There are over 91,000 people registered to vote in Test Valley according

to the Office of National Statistics but this week the local Electoral Registration Officer, Roger Tetstall, has highlighted that some residents may not be able to vote unless they act quickly. Roger Tetstall says: “Borough and Parish Council elections and the UK referendum on the voting system for the UK Parliament are all taking place on Thursday 5 May. Anyone who has moved house in the past few months will need to register with their new address. If they haven’t yet registered

to vote, they will be missing out unless they take action.” Residents can request a registration form by calling the Test Valley Elections Office on 01264 368021 or by emailing [email protected] or by printing off a registration form from http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/. Phillipa Sarray from the Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog, adds: “Residents may also be planning to be away on 5 May, given the extra Bank Holiday for the Royal Wedding. So it’s worth applying now to vote by post or proxy if that will suit your plans.

The Carpet Care People

Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

METHOD

Between two sheets of cling film, flatten the veal scallops, chicken breasts or minute steaks with a rolling pin. Make sure that they are flattened fairly thin.

In a pan melt some butter, then add the onion and garlic to soften. When softened add to the ground meat with the chopped parsley and mix well. In the same pan, fry the mushrooms gently and keep aside, meanwhile blanche the petit pois for five minutes.

Split the ground meat into four and place on each scallop. Close the scallop around the ground meat to form a little ball then wrap with the slices of bacon. Finally tie the bacon with cooking twine.

In a dish warm up the oil, fry the meat gently, add wine and water and the beef cube, let it cook for 35 minutes covered. When the 35 minutes has passed add the mushroom and petit pois and let cook for an additional 10 to 15 minutes. You may add some crème fraiche. Check for seasoning and serve a delicious puree of potatoes.

Can be prepared the day before the meal and freezes very well.

East Tytherley Country FayreSATURDAY, JUNE 11TH - FROM 12 NOON TO

LATE AT OAKLANDS HOUSE (OPPOSITE ST

PETER’S CHURCH)

East Tytherley is a small village with a big problem. Lying quietly in

the heart of the Test Valley, it is home to about 100 people as well as an historic church in need of urgent repairs totalling over £30,000.

St Peter’s Church can trace its history back to the 14th century, when it stood next to a royal manor house. It retains some stained glass that is believed to be the oldest in Hampshire and has a bell tower that boasts a full quarter peal of bells. However, years of weathering have taken their toll on the fabric of the building and the church now also has broken lead flashings, slipping roof tiles and damp patches of plaster.

A £30,000 repair bill would have been a challenge rather than a problem for Jane Scoones, a church warden at St Peter’s for more than 25 years who, sadly, died of cancer last August, aged just 55. But her positive outlook on life lives on in the minds of her friends and neighbours who are determined to raise the money in her memory. They are spurred on by her husband, Rob, who promised his wife that the repair work would be carried out.

The result is that the ever-popular East Tytherley fete, which for several years has been held in the grounds of the Scoones’ home overlooking the church, has developed into the East Tytherley Country Fayre. Taking place at Oaklands House on Saturday, June 11th, the fayre will follow the same wining formula as the fete but be even better.

A modest £2 per adult entry charge will provide access to ferret, gun dog and falconry displays as well as the Mill Cottage farm experience for children and have-a-go archery sessions. There will also be steam engines, racing cars and vintage machinery plus more than 30 local traders, artists and crafts people.

In addition, the arena will host children’s races and a fun dog competition with classes for the best tricks, waggiest tail and smartest six legs in fancy dress. On the front lawn, visitors will be able to enjoy cream teas and cakes while listening to Lockerley Silver Band or take part in traditional fete activities, such as the coconut shy, bottle stall and chicken splat.

With the day starting early at 12 noon, there will be plenty of food and drink to sustain people throughout, including local ales, Pimm’s, strawberries, ice cream and an abundance of BBQ food. Entertainment will continue into the evening with a hog roast and folk music followed by dancing until late.

Issue 35 MAY www.stockbridgeforum.co.uk

How many times do we run rigid fingers through unkempt hair and say, “I need a break, just got to get away”?

Ah it’s just me then is it? I think not.

The Pagan household, it may surprise you to hear, is actually no more stressed than any other that I know of. On a sliding scale of 1-500 we can probably dip into the positively catatonic (for us) at around 40, whilst the current record for the pinnacle of stress-induced lunacy has to be around the 498.9 mark …ish. We are not unique, obviously, and fortunate that our ‘stress’ amounts to, on the grand global scale, nothing more than working class angst (that’s the same as middle class angst, just a bit rougher). Yes, yes, I can rationalise all that – BUT - that didn’t prevent me from doing what all women need to do from time to time: escape.

The onset of ‘I need to get away syndrome’ was innocuous enough: a few wry smiles at the state of Star I’s bedroom. Irrespective of how many times I suggest, even ask, if towels could be picked up, washing could be put in the vicinity of the machine, the bed made to look as if there isn’t a body still in it, curtains drawn back and lights turned off …. all of them, oh and the shower - it falls on deaf ears, quite possibly because there are always head phones over them, but more likely, that I’ve not been firm enough.

Star II has learnt to be equally high maintenance. Occasionally I find the bed made, but there’s normally a pay back: “Mum, as I’ve done that, not like (at this point the eyes gesticulate toward the elder sibling), can I have a treat, PLEEEASE …”

“Well no, you making your bed is a small price to pay for the hassle of … the mornings.” Ah, the dreaded mornings.

They start off well enough. I go into the bedroom, pull back the curtains and say something in Mary Poppins vein: “It’s a lovely day. I’ll leave your clothes on the end of your bed, try to get up soon - don’t want to be late … again.”

From within the darkened cave that is Star II’s duvet comes, “What day is it?”

“Tuesday.”

“How many more days at school?”

“Three, if we don’t count today…”

At this point it doesn’t pay to get too close. There’s a long, low growl followed by a fist jabbing out from under the duvet accompanied by a tirade about the injustice of having to go to school. I back away suggesting it might be nice to walk if there’s time.

'I nEED TO GET aWay' S y n D R O m E

Then it’s time to repeat what is already a monotonous routine. Bleach the loos, make the beds, pick up yet more towels, clean the shower, call Star II, sort the blinds (why can’t men pull up Roman blinds properly?), gather up the washing from the floor, shut the wardrobe doors, call Star II, hear another growl. I hold my breath before entering the room of Star I to open the window, hoping the fumes from the heady mix of cheap aftershave, deodorant and expensive aftershave stolen from the Husband, don’t get to my lungs first, gather up festering socks and pants, put the washing on, keeping calling Star II, keep reminding Star I to put the homework, lunch money, return slip and ubiquitous medical form into the school bag. Meanwhile Star I is demanding to know the whereabouts of a tie, homework, blazer and phone which has somehow managed not to be charged.

Simultaneously the Husband is trying to hold a sensible conversation with me: “Right now Sandra love, the floor in the kitchen - have you decided what you want yet?”

“Um…well…” My mind races. Wood , slate, lino, tiles, specially imported Italian marble with fossils in or mosaics hand laid by a team of eunuchs? I don’t know, it’s only half past seven in the morning!

All very normal, I guess, just the tip of a very large iceberg. Straw and camels backs sprang to mind and so I entered the final phase of ‘need to get away syndrome’ – I went away.

I pinned the A4 itinerary on the kitchen wall: times and dates of all drop off and pick ups, both school and clubs various. The prepared meals and instructions on how to cook them were there too, complete sets of school uniform had been piled up in order of wearing, and the house had been cleaned to the point of being sterile.

I could leave, guilt free, and so at 6.30am after fond farewells, I found myself hurtling up the A34 accompanied by Chris Evans (not literally, obviously) and then on to the M4, towards my secret destination, with Mumford and Sons blaring. Marvellous.

Three days later I was home again with my shoulders where they should be instead of being level with my ears: I was de-stressed and relaxed and full of future plans and zest for life. Even the fact that the minute I was through the door it became apparent that I would have to get the hoover out and that the new kitchen (almost finished now) looked as if they had simply thrown their food all over it, it didn’t seem to matter.

I put my bag down and cleaned up. The old retainer was back.

a new crown in 90 minutes?although our patients tell us they like visiting the practice we appreciate they are busy people. they would wish to spend as little time as possible in the dental chair.

with this in mind we have installed the latest

cerec technology. this is a revolutionary

innovation that enables us to design, fabricate

a crown, inlay or veneer in a single visit. when

you arrive, a digital camera is used to take

an image of a prepared tooth, instead of an

impression or mould. you then relax with a

coffee and a magazine whilst we design the restoration. the whole

procedure that would normally take at least two weeks, if not more,

just takes around an hour and a half.
