8 Community News

When Jo Buist and David Johnston took over

Chilbolton Village Shop in November 2006

it combined their passion for village life and

good quality produce. They had a vision of

how they thought a village shop should look and the role it

should play in the community. They wanted it to be a place

where you could come and chat, feel at home and welcome,

buy those little necessities that you don’t want to drive to the

supermarket for, pick up some local produce you couldn’t get

elsewhere, all in a clean, fresh, well stocked environment. In

reality, they still believe in those values for the shop but along

the way have added to them and learnt from the experience.

So 2010 has seen the biggest changes to the store for around

35 years (so say the people who remember). With the help

of Hampshire County Council and SEEDA, Jo and David

have dramatically changed the layout inside. The Post Office

and Shop counters are now next to each other and easily

accessible, the old gondola style shelving has been replaced

with modular shelving around the outside walls, freeing up

space in the middle of the store for seasonal displays and

promoting the local and special interest products.

There is now also a new coffee machine allowing walkers,

cyclists, Mums on the school run and anyone else to enjoy

a cappuccino or latte on their journeys. And of course Jo

and David can’t help introducing you to a few of their

own favourites... where else could you find such a range

of delicious items: from garlic stuffed olives to smoked

anchovies; fresh fish shipped overnight from Cornwall;

twice weekly deliveries of fresh meat, at prices that rival

the supermarkets; locally produced, award winning, pork

and sausages; cakes, quiches and ready meals all made in

Chilbolton; bread, croissants and pastries all baked on the

premises each morning; alongside your pint of milk, loaf of

bread, chocolate bar or newspaper.

And to tell people about the new look and feel and about

what’s going on in the shop and in the village, David has

developed a new website www.chilboltonstores.co.uk or you

could join us on Facebook.

So if you haven’t visited the Chilbolton Stores and Post Office

before or maybe not for a while, why not pop in and see what

they have to offer, you’ll be sure of a warm welcome. Coming

soon: the increasingly popular Christmas delivery service,

watch the website for this year’s order form.

Bringing Osteopathy to the slums of Nairobi and to the Tribes of the Maasi

I have just returned from the most incredible two weeks of my life!

Having never done any humanitarian work before, I did not know what to expect. I only knew I wanted to help, and to bring home to my family an appreciation of our own fortunate life styles.I travelled out with a group of fourteen Osteopaths and Medics, organised by a charity, The Divinity Foundation, whose primary focus is on the support and care of women and children. It has been an amazing experience, and both physically and emotionally very challenging. We travelled nearly 4 – 6 hours most days to get to our remote locations, and saw up to 400 patients in a day, and over the 2 weeks, nearly 4000!

I saw such varied conditions, ranging from chest and stomach infections, worms and malnutrition, joint and muscular pains, to severe burns, malaria, HIV and TB. We treated babies, children and women and helped many pregnant mums too. There were days of despair when I felt utterly useless, not enough experience, equipment or resources

and other days where I was completely elated, thrilled with the positivity, warmth and gratitude of my patients. I am still coming to terms with what I have seen and done and have left with a

yearning to do more. There is such great need, and some so basic. Simple education in diet and hygiene would improve nutrition, immunity and prevent worms and infection taking hold. Better continuity of care would ensure that families were seen through a course of treatment to a positive conclusion, and also in managing expectations. Families seemed to expect

miracles from us, and I would like to encourage better self reliance and take them back to a time when there was no white man with his handouts. It is a fine balance, difficult to find. Most parents agreed it

emma Wightman’s Humanitarian expedition

was possible to eat more fruit and veg, to wash hands, to brush teeth and to drink more water, most just didn’t know it would be of benefit.

Osteopathy is a holistic form of healthcare, and believes the body has its own healing ability. Most of the children I saw were so ill I believe that their ability, or vitality needed to fight infection had gone. We helped to stimulate that healing ability but, as the children shouted to me as I left one day, ‘What’s next?’ And quite right, what is next? How will that vitality, that natural healing ability, stay strong if they return to eating the soil, living and breathing next to open fires and picking through raw sewage. It is a tough question to answer and may take several generations to get it right, but I hope that I can return one day and be a small part of that healthcare and education process.

It was a hugely fulfilling trip and fascinating meeting and treating such wonderful people. I owe this trip to the incredible kindness of my family, friends and patients, I am so very grateful for your support. It was a great pleasure to be actually putting your kind donations into the very hands that needed them. Thank you so much for your generosity, your donations put a smile on so many little faces (including my own)!If you are interested, do have a look at my blog, I have recounted so many of my wonderful and sometimes heartbreaking stories, and included many photos. Perhaps you will spot some of your donations!

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

Skin Logic has become the first beauty salon in the South East to offer Derma Rolling.

This unique facial has up until now only been carried out by doctors/nurses & medical practitioners. Skin Logic specialise in facials that offer real results to their clients, so when salon owner Emma Holmes saw the effects of Derma Rolling on the skin she immediately wanted to offer it!

Emma explains “I am always looking out for advanced treatments to correct skin conditions like ageing & scarring. So when I saw two close friends looking years younger with incrediably smooth skin I asked them what they had used to achieve such dramatic results. Both ladies had attended clinics in London to have Derma Rolling. This started me on my quest to offer this facial. Both I and Geraldine have been fully

trained and insured by a medical practitioner. We are now offering Derma Rolling on the face and body”.Emma would like to point out that there are similar procedures within the beauty market, however the system Skin Logic are using is of a medical strength where anaesthetic is used on the skin prior to treatment.

Derma Rolling is also known as Micro Needling, as the entire circumference of the roller is covered in precision needles. These small needles

prick the skin to aid product penetration and encourage the skin to heal and repair, thereby stimulating new collagen growth. This facial is excellent for scarring, anti-ageing and uneven skin surfaces.

Skin Logic is offering free of charge in depth consultations on this new treatment, where the full procedure from numbing to rolling and after care will be fully explained.

GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Grass cutting • Hedge cuttingPruning • Leaf clearingShrub plantingNeglected gardens tidiedRegular garden maintenance

18 The Plot Thickens

I am not, by nature, the tidiest person – in a family home it is as endless as weeding. yet

there is a satisfaction in the autumnal garden tidy up that I annually enjoy. As much as I celebrate spring’s arrival with eager trips to the garden centre and summer is greeted with a ceremonial ‘bringing out’ of garden toys and that special deck chair that I never seem to get around to sitting in; autumn has that calm air of unspoken superiority. Maybe it’s the anticipation of our quintessentially British countdown: Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas and New year. Maybe it’s the comfort of being out in the fresh autumnal air and knowing a good sherry and roast dinner await. Or maybe it is simply the knowledge that in a busy family household there is one ‘room’ that I can tidy and it will stay that way until spring.

So, once the air has changed and the chill has come, I spend a happy weekend pulling out spent salad and annuals, clipping back my herbs and idly pulling bits off the lavender. Even the topiary gets a good clipping. The roses, I have to admit, are pretty well cared for all season – I am on safe ground here. They are deadheaded, pruned back and continue to flower. I had to take a firm hand with a fussy Hebe earlier in the year and, having pruned out the dead bits it rallied and had a fabulous display, so my confidence is bolstered to

attack the big one that is getting rather leggy. Taking the dead bits off plants is easy. Pruning shrubs for shape frankly makes me a bit edgy. I have lost enough plants through inclement weather and accidental neglect; I don’t really want to kill any through direct action if I can at all help it. This is probably why the garden beds are mostly herbaceous; they ask simply to be tied back when they fulfil their glorious destiny and pulled when they are done.

Mother is one of life’s ‘hard pruners’. Many a year I have been given strict instructions to take plants back to knee or ankle height. And every time I am grateful, and quietly amazed, that it works. In fact it worked so well with the jasmine last year that for most of this summer it has been impossible to actually sit on the arbour seat, for fear of being caught up like some helpless fish in a sea of tentacles. And now I have the looming prospect of a full-on up the ladder jasmine pruning like some kind of gardening professional. It doesn’t help that I have had one too many pruning disasters. My first lesson in plant grafting was learnt when I pruned an Acer too far and a prize bronze specimen is now its original green but with unique bronze tips. And in a recent fit of summer tidying fury I attacked the rampant honeysuckle ‘out front’ that

was strangling next door’s winter jasmine. Amazing how the thickness of the satellite cable is exactly the same as the honeysuckle; and offers up the same lack of resistance. Only when I pulled the fistful of plant away did I discover my mistake – clean through, copper wires glinting in the sunlight. My husband smiled in a supportive way through gritted teeth.

Every autumn the inevitable question of spring bulbs is raised. We would love a joyous display of crocus, daffodils and tulips. Every year we spend a small fortune on bulbs; we even get around to planting most of them after they have sat in their bags for a few weeks. And every spring we get a pitiful display. We simply can’t seem to do bulbs. It could be the clay soil; more likely to be the slugs and squirrels. That and the fact

that Mother and I have only just learnt what appears to be a closely guarded gardening secret; that repeat flowering tulips need to be of the Darwin family. Alas, for another spring we will have to be content with local walks to see such delights.

But autumn is nigh, the lawn is cut, the leaves are swept and the hedgehog is snuffling round for a suitable sleeping spot. Once again I have tidied and swept, pruned and pulled. The garden looks tidy and, dare I say it, a little bare. I shall have to bite the bullet next spring and get more shrubs. But for now, as I look out over the carpet of toddler toys, the strewn coats and bags, the haphazard shoes and we won’t even mention the kitchen, it is tidy, tidy, tidy and that will keep me going until spring.AWB

Thank you, thank you and thank you once again for the amazing support we have received since our 1st July opening. I'll never forget the shrill voice of a terrified staff member 10 minutes before we opened, "there are 15 people queuing to get in!!!" We are also thankful for the patience customers have had whilst we've been finding our feet in the very busy bistro. Since opening we have been actively seeking our customers feedback with over 300 questionnaires filled out. This has really helped us steer our offering and service to meet your demands. Three months have zipped by with 60 new exciting products being added to our opening stock. Our cheese counter is brimming with the best local and European cheeses that we can muster. We are also sourcing some fabulous sheeps milk cheeses from Portugal & Spain - please pop in and try some. Inevitably our attention is turning towards the most exciting event in speciality food retailing; Christmas. We have been munching our way through mountains of festive food samples (well someone's got to do it!) and we have selected a delicious range

of Christmas goodies. To celebrate our first Christmas here in Stockbridge we are showcasing our new products at our first 'Festive Fayre Weekend', Saturday 27th - Sunday 28th November. To mark this festive weekend we are delighted to be joined by some of our key foodie suppliers to really whip up some crimbo spirit, quite literally!!

Recipe supplied and sponsored by Germain

Marquis of Clos du Marquis Restaurant

A good and simple recipe to enjoy with a nice bottle of red wine. Another

excellent way to get rid of the surplus of a shoot! I love old fashioned traditional country food; it's where the inspiration for cooking comes from.

MethodFor the stuffing: peel and dice the carrot, crush the garlic, julienne the onion and chop the parsely. Fry the diced bacon together with these ingredients. Put the breadcrumbs in a little milk, off the heat. Add the breadcrumb mixture to the egg, mix well and add salt and pepper, combine with bacon mixture. Stuff the birds well.

Cover birds with two slices of streaky bacon each, attached with a string. Fry birds briefly in butter. Remove the stem of the

red cabbage and the first external leaves. Wash the cabbage and slice in julienne (5mm) then blanch in boiling water for 10 minutes and strain. Next, melt the duck fat or warm up the olive oil in an oven proof dish. Fry the onion and cabbage briefly. ( I like a few seeds of cumin with red cabbage, but it is optional).Add red wine, put the birds on top and cover tightly with foil. Cook for 1 hour at 180°C or gas mark 6.

When cooked remove the birds from the tray and cut them in half. Strain the cabbage over a sauce pan and transfer to a serving dish. Put the birds on top of the cabbage then cover with a lid so that they do not to get cold.

Bring the remaining sauce to the boil, either whisk the corn starch to thicken the sauce or add small tea spoons (one at a time) of

soft butter in the warm, but not boiling sauce. Ensure you whisk all the time to achieve an evenly thickened sauce. Alternatively add an egg yolk whisking non stop, but be careful not to create scrambled eggs! Obviously corn starch is the easiest!

Taste and add seasoning if necessary. Pour the sauce over the birds (reserve some sauce for a sauce boat).

Finally, serve with a delicious home made puree. I love celeriac puree.

On 1st February 2011 I open a cookery school at the Clos Du Marquis. I will be able to teach eight students at a time. For more information watch this space. If a Frenchman loves cricket an Englishman can cook!Germain Marquis

The choir for 35 years was known as the Jane Austen Singers. They recorded and

performed at The Anvil, Basingstoke, New Hall, Winchester College and St Nicolas Church, Newbury with professional orchestras. We also sang in private houses raising money for charity performing a range of sacred music, madrigals and part songs, etc. Having formed and conducted the choir thoughout, they moved to Longstock and were asked to put on an Advent Carol service. That was some five years ago and it is now an

Collegium Musicumannual feature in the village calendar, raising approx. £800 pa for the church and village hall. This year they would like to have more people to know about this service so that we can really fill the church and break the £1000 barrier! The service will be held on Sunday 28th November (Advent Sunday) at 6pm in St Mary's Church, Longstock. There is an excellent supper after the service in the village hall.

Tickets are £8 and need to be booked in advance from Selina Musters: 01264 810459 or 01264 810601

ST MARy’S ANDOVER

The casual visitor to Andover, seeing St Mary’s with its imposing 160ft. tower

[recently home to a Peregrine falcon!] on the highest point in the town, would perhaps agree with the above description, especially if there was time to look inside, which has been described as sensational!

The church was a gift to the town in 1840 by the Rev’d William Stanley Goddard D.D., a former headmaster of Winchester College, and he sought successfully to have the design based upon that of Salisbury Cathedral in the Early English style. It was completed in 1846.

The church stands on the site of a previous Norman church building, the only visual remnant of which is the ‘Norman Arch’, which leads to the Garden of Remembrance just beside the attractive Willows restaurant with its Post Offices theme. Originally this arch framed the main west door of the Norman church, the nave floor of which still exists beneath the present church in an unused underground crypt.

There is little doubt that the Norman church replaced an earlier Saxon building on the same site and was the place of confirmation of St. Olaf by Alphege, Bishop of Winchester in AD 994. His conversion to Christianity led to his realm of Norway also becoming Christian on his return to his homeland.

The windows of St. Mary’s are a ‘tour de force’ of 19th and 20th century stained glass, soon to be completed [2011] by a new pair of windows in the only remaining plain glass in the nothwest corner.

Chilbolton Pre-school welcome children from 2 years 9 months

took a good look at how we share, eat and provide

for ourselves and those around us. The year 5/6 class explored Fairtrade and their findings rubbed off on the younger children who, the following week, explored a local supermarket and discovered all of the Fairtrade products available on the shelves. year 3/4 children talked to the congregation about how they feel regarding things that they have easy access to which others might not; a warm home, clothes, plentiful food and many other things. years 1, 2 and our

youngest Reception children have been learning about fruit, vegetables and how to keep themselves healthy. year 1/2 presented a set of instructions for a healthy fruit salad (although they did mention accompanying it with cream or ice cream!) and the youngest children performed The Very Hungry Caterpillar story which I’m sure many of you are familiar with.

There won’t be many of you within the local community who won’t know a child who has moved on this term, either as a toddler beginning pre-school, a 4 year old starting school for the first time, an 11

year old making the bold step into secondary school or a 16 year old moving onto sixth form. We’ve had a few tears (mostly from the parents!) as children have left us back in July and from those who have joined us in September but already they’ve settled well and all those nerves and excitement have begun to disappear and a new found confidence soon emerges. Our open days on Tuesday

2nd Nov from 1.15pm – 3.00pm and Wednesday 3rd Nov from 9.30am – 11.30am will give prospective parents the perfect opportunity to see our School at work, we look forward to meeting you then.Enjoy the beautiful changing season of autumn. The foundation slab of a new Community Resource Centre for Andover and

District Mencap was laid during a recent ceremony held at Winchester Road in Andover. The new centre is being constructed by the Leadbitter Group on the site of the old Wellington pub.

David Cook, Regional Director of Leadbitter’s Southern Housing and Construction division, welcomed guests to the ceremony, including Elizabeth Hall, Founder and Vice Chair and Hon. Vice President of Andover & District Mencap. Ms Hall then put the final touches to complete the foundation slab of the building, before guests gathered for lunch in Mencap’s present home,

the Bonhomie Centre, South End Road. The Resource Centre will provide a focal point for Andover & District Mencap, allowing it to offer a wide range of social, leisure, educational and vocational opportunities and activities both for people with learning disabilities and the wider community. The charity hopes that the new centre will help to enable it to operate from the heart of the local neighbourhood, providing inclusive opportunities for people with a learning disability and forging links with the local voluntary sector and the wider community.David Cook said: “We at Leadbitter are delighted to be constructing this much-needed resource centre in Andover. We look forward to delivering a first class

building of which Andover and District Mencap can be proud.”

Andover and District Mencap supports adults and children with learning disabilities, as well as their families and carers. It was established more than 40 years ago and, since then, has been working to help people with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible within the community.

The organisation wants to develop its services, enabling even more people with learning disabilities to benefit. Its present home in South End Road is no longer suitable for its needs, and the new centre in Winchester Road will provide modern facilities suitable for the people of Andover and the

surrounding areas. Simon Tyler, Chief Executive, Andover & District Mencap, said: “This is an exciting time for Andover and District MENCAP. We are delighted to embark on this new phase

of our ongoing commitment to the local neighbourhood and we are certain that our new resource centre will be a beacon in the community."

A new crown in 90 minutes?Although our patients tell us they like visiting the practice we appreciate they are busy people. They would wish to spend as little time as possible in the dental chair.

With this in mind we have installed the latest CEREC technology. This is a revolutionary innovation that enables us to design, fabricate a crown, inlay or veneer in a single visit. When you arrive, a digital camera is used to take an image of a prepared tooth, instead

of an impression or mould. You then relax with a coffee and a magazine whilst we design the restoration. The whole procedure that would normally take at least two weeks, if not more, just takes around an hour and a half.

Remember our success is your smile, For more information on CEREC please call us or drop in.
