City to honor Independence Day with a bang
PORT ST. LUCIE — For more than 20 years, city residents have gathered to remember history, give thanks to today’s military freedom fighters and cel-ebrate the nation’s independence, declared on July 4, 1776. In keeping with its patriotic customs, the city will
host Freedomfest on July 4 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. The family-friendly tradition is one of the city’s biggest, one time attracting a whopping 10,000, city council members said. “Freedomfest is the culmination of all of our best
holidays and it is a community event,” Council-woman Michelle Berger said. “There is no bigger
event in Port St. Lucie, I don’t think, than Freedomfest ... People are out in droves.” The free event,
which includes free parking, takes more than eight months to plan and

Superintendent search hits a snag
State employment continues to pick up
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Just as the St. Lucie County School Board was to choose a new super-intendent, several developments caused the board to halt the decision indefinitely and expand the search to include more candidates. The school district’s two remaining candidates,
Darci Mohr and Agnella Perera, are on standby after two of their competitors recently withdrew from the running. Scott Bailey, chief academic officer of Washoe County School District in Reno, Nev., cited health reasons, while the only local candidate, Mark Rendell, St. Lucie County School District assistant superintendent, said his family needed stability, something the race for superin-tendent hindered, board members said. He will continue working at his current position at the

TREASURE COAST — Statewide the unemploy-ment numbers continue an inching decline, but St. Lucie and Martin counties had an upward bump from April to May. “This time of year, our rate always bumps up a
little bit,” Odaly Victorio, communications coor-dinator for Workforce Solutions of the Treasure Coast, said.According to the monthly jobs report the state’s
Department of Economic Opportunity released on Friday, June 21, Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was at 7.1 percent in May, the lowest it’s been since September 2008. That month the unemployment rate was 7.0 percent. The state’s unemployment rate has declined

Garden Club looks to help disabled enjoy nature with ease
ST. LUCIE WEST — The St. Lucie West Garden Club is looking to help the community while promoting the club’s love of nature. Members recently bought a
wheelchair from a local sec-ond-hand shop and are search-ing for the perfect home for the chair after its original recipient was unable to accept it for legal reasons. Club President Uta McFadden
said she gave the wheelchair to the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gar-dens, a gift the gardens accepted with open arms. But the fine print got in the
way, McFadden said. Because of strict liability rules, the Botani-cal Gardens was unable to keep the wheelchair, a disappointed McFadden said. “It was a good idea and they
were very, very happy and now we’re in a dilemma,” McFadden said. The wide wheelchair, perfect
for heavier users, would have made it easier for anyone with even the slightest of disabilities, to enjoy the 20-acre grounds, which contains a Bromeliad Is-land Garden. The St. Lucie West Garden Club regularly maintains the garden they created last year. McFadden said she and her 40
members are researching other gardens in the area. “I would like to do it for a
garden,” she said. “It’s just like
an extension to give something to people who enjoy flowers and gardening and everything like that.” If worse comes to worst, the
club may consider keeping the wheelchair for its own disabled members, the club’s vice presi-dent Paula Eliasek, said. “In the club we have several
ladies who feel like they don’t necessarily have to go out on outings with us because they can’t walk well. We have field trips every year,” Eliasek said. “The idea of us having one to use on our own would solve that issue.” Finding the perfect home for
its newest purchase isn’t the club’s first dabble in paying it forward. Each year, the club sends a handful of children to a nature camp in the central part of the state. “We sent six last year. This
year only three,” said McFadden, who said raising funds was a challenge this year. To help pay for the annual
trip, the club hosts a yearly fash-ion show and even does its own clothes exchange auction among members. Anything raised goes to the camp fund, McFadden said. McFadden said sending the
kids to camp is always a joy. “The kids always send us
beautiful ‘Thank you’ notes when they get back,’ McFadden said.
For more information on the St. Lucie West Garden Club or if you believe your nature organization is a match for the wheelchair, call Uta McFadden at (772) 871-0830.

costs less than $10,000 to pull off. Last year, a band pro-vided the event’s live music. This year, it’s one big dance party from 7:30-10 p.m., a city representative said. New food eating contests have also been added for aspiring competitive eaters just waiting for his or her big break on Travel Channel. “We do it every year and it gets bigger and better every
year,” Mayor JoAnn Faiella said. “We’re pretty excited to have it again this year.” A staple of the event is the spectacular fireworks dis-
play that ends the night. The show is set to last 30 min-utes long. “The fireworks are second-to-none,” Vice Mayor Linda
Bartz said. “It really is a great, great day.” Fanfare aside, Bartz said the day’s significance lies
in honoring America’s independence, Constitution and troops who keep the nation free. “We all have a chance on July 4 to go out there and
say, ‘We are free,’ ‘We thank you because we know free-dom is not free,’” Bartz said, referring to honoring our nation’s veterans. The Martin Health System Village Square and the Port
St. Lucie Civic Center are on the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 1 and Walton Road. Call (772) 807-4499 for more information. Freedomfest begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. For prime firework seating and an expanded food
menu, the Freedomfest VIP party will feature a buffet (in-cluding pulled pork, chicken quarters or strips, hot dogs and all the fixings) starting at 6:30 p.m. on the back patio of the Civic Center. Tickets are on sale now for the VIP Party at a cost of $25 for adults and $10 for children 3 to 12 years old. Children 2 and younger are admitted free.

Noted cancer researcher joins VGTI
PORT ST. LUCIE — The Vac-cine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida recently announced the appointment of Keith Knutson as oncology program director.Knutson, who holds a doctorate
in pharmacology from the Univer-sity of Georgia, previously served as director of the Ovarian Cancer and Immunology Program at the Mayo Clinic.Knutson’s work at VGTI, located
at the Tradition Center for Inno-vation, will continue to focus on using the immune system and vaccine to help the body fight ovarian and breast cancers. He recently received a $3.7 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to identify proteins or other markers in the body that make certain patients unlikely to respond to some therapies. In a phone interview, Knutson
spoke about the challenges of his new position and the work ahead. He is excited about his move to VGTI.“VGTI is in its infancy,” he said.
“We just moved within the last year into a new facility. There is a long road ahead on terms of
establishing a strong cancer pres-ence. We hope to develop a strong interactive team to come up with novel solutions for treatments for several types of cancers. “One of the buzzwords is ‘Dream
Team.’ It is an effective approach to bring investigators with dif-ferent expertise to work collabo-ratively in a synergistic fashion. That’s the long-term vision of VGTI and a most powerful mag-net for me to take this position.” The idea of vaccine to prevent
cancer is not a new one and some have proved successful.“A good example of a cancer
vaccine is the cervical cancer vaccine,” he said. “It generates an immune response against and an infective agent, HPV. We have a specific target. Breast and ovar-ian cancer don’t have an agent like a virus. Some people are working to find a bacterial or viral cause, but there are no strong contenders.”Knutson noted that there are
clinical trials ongoing to test vac-cines to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer. “The hope on the prevention
front is to conduct clinical trials testing a variety of antigens in individuals at high risk,” he said. “We don’t know what causes
breast cancer, but we do know it represents a lifetime of risk. It may have its origins early on. “It could be that some subsets
have some kind of exposure that causes a mutation, or it could be multiple hits. One of the chal-lenges at VGTI is to understand the host (body) and how it con-tributes to the development of disease. What are the sequences that have to occur? The researcher noted that for
some cancers, such as lung can-cer, we have identified a behavior, smoking, that causes disease. That behavior can be modified.“There is some evidence with
breast cancer that environment plays a role,” he said. “Women who come from other cultures and adopt a Western lifestyle are at higher risk.”Research is ongoing to try to
identify the factors that increase that risk and to try to determine why certain people develop can-cer while others do not.“Imagine, for a moment, a
healthy individual who develops a tumor,” Knutson said. “The immune system sees it and the tumor disappears. We have no idea it was there. There is no clinical evidence of its existence. For those who do develop tumors,
it has gotten around those mech-anisms. They are being identified and immune modulators are on the horizon to activate an im-mune response. For breast cancer, part of the
challenge of treatment is iden-tifying the characteristics of the tumor. The goal in making the identification is to target tailor treatments to the tumor type,“We need clinical trials to cor-
relate features with outcomes,” Knutson said. “We’re just start-ing to understand the genomic features. We don’t have good understanding of biomarkers that
would inform us how pathogen-ic a tumor is or what treatment (would work.) Over the next decade or two, we’ll have a bet-ter understanding of treatments. Herceptin is a great example of a targeted therapy.”Herceptin is used for breast
cancer patients who are HER2 positive. That means they overex-press a protein that causes can-cer cells to multiply. The therapy has proved successful with many such patients.

Knutson was recently selected as a committee member of the National Institutes of Health’s Tumor Microenvironment Study Section with the Center for Scien-tific Review.“What it brings to VGTI is expo-
sure to the latest research,” he said. (It’s also an opportunity) to take part on helping NIH decide what applications are meritorious for further funding. It brings a level or responsibility to VGTI and exposure to a group of individuals
to potentially establish collabora-tions. I’m excited.” Excitement, in fact, is a word Keith Knutson uses frequently. It is a challenging time to be a researcher.“I think this is an exciting time.
There are a lot of resources being put into developing targeted therapies. We hope to develop something that works well for patients.”

Meet your St. Lucie Mets:Aderlin Rodriguez 3rd baseman ST. LUCIE WEST — The Do-
minican Republic has been a breeding ground for major league baseball players for more than half a century. Late in the 1956 MLB season,
Ozzie Virgil, from Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, became the Dominican to play in the majors. From the time Virgil stepped on the field for the New York Giants, 866 players from the Domini-can Republic have accomplished their dream of putting on a Major League uniform. St. Lucie Mets’ third baseman
Aderlin Rodriguez, he soon hopes to be amongst the next batch of players to push that number into the thousands. At the tender age of 16, Ro-
driguez’ baseball journey be-gan in 2008 after signing as an undrafted free agent from Santo Dominigo with the New York Mets organization. He signed a mi-nor-league deal worth $600,000. “Getting signed was the first
step for me to fulfilling my dream,” Rodriguez said. “With the money I got from my deal, I was able to put my family back home in a better position economically. They are living in a new home. Life has changed.” “But being signed is just the first step in the big picture. My vision is to play in the major leagues.” Rodriguez would play in 300
games before making his debut with the St. Lucie Mets in the summer of 2012. Delivering on what scouts believe to be his greatest attribute, Rodriguez displayed his raw power by club-bing eight home runs, driving in 24 RBIs and hitting .242 in 42 games for St. Lucie last year.Still acclimating to Class A+
pitching, Rodriguez slumped out of the gate this season, hitting just .186 through the first month before a complete reversal of for-tune in May. In 26 games in May, Rodriguez
would nearly double his April av-erage, hitting .343 while smash-
ing six long balls and driving in 29 RBIs. “Through the struggles and
still trying to adjust to the league, pitch recognition has been the key to my improvement from the beginning of the year,” Rodri-guez said. “At the end of the day, swinging at strikes and making sure I’m not swinging outside of the strike zone is what’s going to help me get better.” At the time of press, Rodriguez
ranks second on the Mets in hits (64), home runs (9), and RBIs (41). Asked who some of the current
players are that he admires, Ro-driguez was quick to name fellow countrymen David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, Albert Pujols of the Los Angeles Angles, Alex Ro-driguez and Panamanian Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees. With Pujols and Rivera, Rodri-
guez’ admiration has as much to do with their actions off the field as it does on it. “Although they’ve been in the
spotlight and are playing in big cities, they’ve always had this lifestyle where they’re never in trouble,” Rodriguez said.

district. In the meantime, Deputy Su-
perintendent Genelle Yost will become interim superintendent when Michael Lannon retires after a decade at the district’s helm. Although a good candidate,
Yost becoming the superinten-dent is unlikely, national search consultant Jim Huge said. “She is in that drop window
when she has to retire in two years,” Huge said. School board member Kathryn
Hensley said she’s confident Yost will be a good leader as the board continues its search. “We do not have a timeline.
We have left it very open-ended because we have an extremely strong interim who will be our interim superintendent (starting) July 1,” Hensley said. “It is much more important for
us to find the right match than to have a line on the sand with a date,” said Hensley, who said her frontrunner had been Scott Bailey. Hensley added after Bailey withdrew, she believed the com-munity consensus was mixed. Hensley said the extra time will
be beneficial in the long run. “It is very important we take
our time to make sure that we get someone who understands us, has a fairly significant term of commitment to us. I’d like see someone who can be committed five years to St. Lucie County,” Hensley said. “It is extremely im-portant, because it is not just the schools, it is the community.” “We know that you build
economic sustainability through your K-12 system. So it is import-ant that we have someone who is going to work with the communi-ty at large. We spent many years building collaborative coalitions,” she said. “Somebody coming in needs to have that ability to kind of step in that and move us even further in those opportunities.” Huge said twists and turns in
the search process are common in recent times. “This happens more frequent-
ly today, just because there are more superintendents near retire-ment. More than half in the U.S. are going to retire in the next two years,” Huge said. Although a timeline hasn’t
been fixed, Huge said he expects interviews to resume soon. “We will re-advertise and re-
open the search and do inter-views again (this) fall with the ex-pectation that person will report next fall (in 2014),” said Huge, who already has two potential candidates in mind. School board member Carol
Hilson said at the end of the day, she’d like a unanimous board when it comes to selecting a new leader. “Even if we had a 3-2 vote,
that’s not what you want to do when you’re selecting a superin-tendent. I would say, I’d like it to be a unanimous decision,” said Hilson, who added the board was not in agreement before the pair withdrew.
Still in the running:
• Darci Mohr, assistant superin-tendent of Human Resources in Boulder Valley School District in Boulder, Colo.
• Agnella Perera, superintendent of Isle of Wight County Schools in Smithfield, Va.

Statistical Area — St. Lucie and Martin counties — had an 8.5 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May, up from 8.2 percent in April. In May of 2012, the MSA’s rate was 10.0 percent. St. Lucie moved up from the
fourth to third highest unemploy-ment rate in the state in May, 9.3 percent. Hendry County had the highest, at 11.1, followed by Flagler at 9.5 percent. Martin moved down from 29th to 30th place with a May unemployment rate at 6.9 percent. Martin’s rate climbed slightly
from 6.8 percent in April. St. Luc-ie’s April unemployment figure was 8.9 percent. In May of 2012, that county was at 10.9 percent unemployment. The Workforce Development
Board of the Treasure Coast includes Indian River and Okeechobee counties along with St. Lucie and Martin.
“I’m looking at the region’s numbers, and for April it was 8.1 and for May 8.5 (percent),” Victorio said. “Last year, it was 9.9 in April and 10.1 in May. The increase we had has been histori-cally consistent.” She said the region has a differ-
ent tourism season than other parts of the state, which contrib-utes to a May to August unem-ployment slump. “(The unemployment rate will)
inch upward a little more before it goes down again,” she said. “In September, traditionally, it goes down. It peaks in August.”Victorio said looking at year-
over-year comparisons show that the local area is recovering slowly but nicely from the recent eco-nomic downturn along with the state and nation.

Mystery shopper scam hits St. Lucie County, sheriff says
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Luc-ie County Sheriff Ken Mascara is cautioning area residents to beware of a new mystery shopper scam that issues participants bogus checks and also asks for money. “No legitimate ‘secret shopper’
program asks you to send some-one else any money,” Mascara said in a news release. “If this happens to you, don’t deposit the check in your account and don’t send payment to another individ-ual. Instead, call 911, and we’ll send a deputy.” An immediate red flag that a
program is illegitimate, the Sher-iff’s Office warns, is when dishon-est promoters request money or ask for funds to be sent or wired to someone else. If participants attempt to deposit or cash a bad check from the mystery shop-per scam, the bank will hold the participant responsible for the fraudulent transaction, the Sher-iff’s Office said. “That’s why you should call
law enforcement and not deposit the check,” Mascara said in the release. “No legitimate company will pay you and ask you to pay someone else as part of a mystery shopper program or for any other reason.” Individuals usually get involved
with a secret shopper scam through printed or Internet ad-vertising or by receiving an e-mail message. To date, less than a dozen local
residents have contacted author-ities about the scam, the Sheriff’s Office said. According to the Federal Trade
Commission’s website, retailers occasionally hire companies to evaluate the quality of service in their stores and frequently use mystery shoppers to get the infor-mation. Retailers instruct a mys-tery shopper to make a particular purchase in a store or restaurant and then report back about the experience. Usually, the shop-per is reimbursed and keeps the product or service. Sometimes the shopper even receives a small payment, the website states. If you believe you are being
asked to participate in a fraud-ulent mystery shopper program,
or any program in which you are paid money and asked to pay someone else, the Sheriff’s Office asks that you call 911. Tips for finding legitimate mystery shopping jobs:
• Research mystery shopping. Check libraries, bookstores, or online sites for tips on how to find legitimate companies hiring mystery shoppers, as well as how to do the job effectively.• Search the Internet for reviews
and comments about mystery shopping companies that are ac-cepting applications online.• Remember that legitimate
companies don’t charge people to work for them — they pay people to work for them.• Never wire money as part of a
mystery shopping assignment.• Visit the Mystery Shopping
Providers Association website at mysteryshop.org to search a database of mystery shopper as-signments and learn how to apply for them. The MSPA offers certifi-cation programs for a fee, but you don’t need “certification” to look — or apply — for assignments in its database.
Don’t do business with mystery shopping promoters
who:
• Advertise for mystery shoppers in a newspaper’s ‘help wanted’ section or by email.• Require that you pay for “certi-
fication.”• Guarantee a job as a mystery
shopper.• Charge a fee for access to mys-
tery shopping opportunities.• Sell directories of companies
that hire mystery shoppers.• Ask you to deposit a check and
wire some or all of the money to someone.Source: www.consumer.ftc.gov/

Florida Department of Elder Affairs to host Medicare training ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Area
Agency on Aging Palm Beach/Treasure Coast, Inc. and the Flor-ida Department of Elder Affairs are offering professional, compre-hensive training on the basics of Medicare in a three-day program to individuals interested in volun-teering with the SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program. The training will begin on July 15 at Indian River State College located at 4600 Kirby Loop Road in Fort Pierce. Volunteers are needed to
provide services to Medicare beneficiaries, their caregivers, and family members. As a SHINE volunteer, you serve your com-munity by performing at least one of the following functions: provide Medicare and health insurance information, counseling, and assistance in person or over the phone, deliver educational pre-sentations or speeches, distrib-ute educational and promotional materials in your community, provide training and leadership to other volunteers, or assist with general program support. A defining moment in aging
for many individuals is turning 65 because uncertainties about issues like Medicare become more important. The SHINE Program has nearly 500 volunteer coun-selors throughout the state, and could use many more to assist the more than 3.5 million aged or
disabled Medicare beneficiaries in Florida. The Area Agency on Aging Palm
Beach/Treasure Coast, Inc. and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs will train interested indi-viduals to provide information and personal assistance with Medicare through its SHINE pro-gram. Volunteering with SHINE will not only help you gain an understanding of the complex world of Medicare for yourself or your loved ones, but it will also empower youz z to help others in your community. For more information, please
call the local Elder Helpline at (866) 684-5885, or call Jennifer Vander May, SHINE liaison, at (772) 467-0008, Ext. 249.

Councils offer cheap family fun this summer With summer in full swing,
many parents and caregivers are in search of fun, inexpensive activities for their children over the break. Kids and adults alike can es-
cape the heat and enjoy a cheap summer movie thanks to the Children’s Services Councils of Martin and St. Lucie counties. Beginning in June, the Chil-
dren’s Services Councils part-nered with Regal Treasure Coast Cinemas for their annual Sum-mer Movie Express at the Trea-sure Coast Square mall. Every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. children and adults can come out and watch a fami-ly-friendly movie for $1. In addition to the offerings
at Regal Cinemas, Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County will be supporting the Summer Kids Series at Nova Cinemas in Fort Pierce. Nova movies are free on Tuesdays,
and groups can attend on Wednesdays with a $1 reserva-tion. For more information, contact
the theatre at (772) 489-8889. There will also be specials
on movie meals for those who attend. Theaters fill up fast, so families are encouraged to show up early and grab their seats. A schedule of movie showings is available at www.cscslc.org. The Children’s Services Coun-
cil of St. Lucie County was es-tablished in 1990 by local voters to be the only child-centered organization in St. Lucie County that invests local dollars back into the community to promote healthy, strong children and families. The Children’s Ser-vices Council partners with a total of more than 50 programs to provide support to newborns and their parents, quality child-care, afterschool activities, and resources to strengthen and em-power families, reaching more than 30,000 children annually.

Church concert series continues to grow
ST. LUCIE WEST — Thomas Bold is the music director of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, but he is gaining renown throughout the Treasure Coast for the musicians he brings to the church during its annual concert series. The series, begun by Bold in 2010 with one concert, has grown
into a season running from December through March. It opens Dec. 2 with the Academy Orchestra, the premier ensem-ble from the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony. That ensemble pairs outstanding young musicians with professional musicians. The concert will pres-ent the music of Mannheim Steamroller, including holiday and non-holiday selec-tions.On Dec. 15, OPUS, the prestigious choral
ensemble from Martin County High School, will present a concert of Christmas music. The group made its Paris debut last year.Italian pianist Francesco Attesti returns to
St. Bernadette Jan. 6 to play Gershwin’s
“Rhapsody in Blue” and Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor with the Academy Orchestra. There will be an additional orchestral work, as
well. The entire Treasure Coast Youth Symphony will perform Jan. 20. Jan. 31 brings a change or pace, with Pear, a country music
ensemble from Canada. On Feb. 9, the Atlantic Ringers, a hand bellringing group from
Vero Beach, will perform a variety of popular pieces.“They’re extremely entertaining to watch and world-class per-
formers,” Bold said.Japanese pianist Manabu Takasawa returns on Feb.

boys from Paris makes a return engagement. The church rafters will ring as
Doc Grober & the Mudcats bring the sounds of Dixieland jazz March 4.March 14 brings 16-year-old
pianist Josiah Wilkinson with a recital of piano masterpieces. The young virtuoso is originally from the Treasure Coast, but has moved to Georgia to study with Alexan-der Kobrin, a winner of the Van Cliburn competition. Josiah just made his Carnegie Hall debut and won first prize in an international competition. The Boston Trio, with musicians
playing the violin, cello and piano, presents music from a variety of periods March 23. This is the first trip to St Bernadette for the all-fe-male group, known for playing classical music.Espressivo, a vocal ensemble
from West Palm Beach, presents a program of music from the Renais-sance to the Jazz Age March 30.If this season goes as others have,
there may well be some surprises added after the season begins. In
an interview earlier this year, Bold spoke about the reason for the series.“Here at St. Bernadette, we cele-
brate stewardship in the highest level with artists from around the world and around the corner,” he said. “Our mission is to bring the Treasure Coast world-class enter-tainment at incredibly affordable ticket prices.”The St. Bernadette Catholic
Church Concert Series begins on Dec. 2 with the Academy Orches-tra of the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony. Concerts are held at the Church, 350 N.W. California Blvd., Port St. Lucie at 7 p.m. Packages will be available for mixing and matching programs. Individual tickets will range from $20-35, depending on the perform-er. Children sixth grade and under are admitted free; children seventh grade and up pay half-price. Information about the concerts
and the performers and to pur-chase tickets will be available at a new website, www.boldtunes.com., which will be up and running by the end of the summer. There is also a new phone number for the series, (772) 224-7089.
