Welcome to the

Catholic Church of St. John the Evangelist

Our parishioners, the parish staff and I, as pastor, hope that your visit to our church will be a prayerful time while at the Mayo Clinic or while you are visiting our city for any

other reason. We encourage you to consider St. John the Evangelist as

your church away from home. If we may serve you with any of your needs please do not hesitate to contact us at the Parish Center.

Also, please know that the Mayo Clinic offers a chaplaincy service

while you are in the hospital and it is possible for communion to be

brought to you every day by you talking to the hospital staff and

placing a card outside of your door. The Sacrament of Anointing of the

Sick is available by request.

The St. John the Evangelist Community is committed to

proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ as we partner with the city

and our neighbor, the Mayo Clinic. If you have recently moved to our city and desire to join the parish

community, please find a form on our web page or stop by the Parish Center and register as a member. Together we pray that the Holy

Spirit will lead us in being a welcoming Catholic community.

Fr. Jerry Mahon

Pastor

Welcome to the Church of St. John the Evangelist

A WITNESS OF BELONGING

Dear Friends in Christ:

Recently, the Committee on Divine Worship in the US reflected on the meaning of the cathedral. This article certainly “hits home”, as we prepare to become the Co-Cathedral of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester next weekend. The significance of this event cannot be overestimated, and it is not a formality at all! As you will read below, by becoming a Co-Cathedral, our church will be the living sign of Christ’s ongoing presence, 2000 years after God became a man and dwelt among us. This will be the see of a successor of those Apostles that Jesus himself instituted.

Sebastian Modarelli

The Second Vatican Council taught that one of the names of the Church of God is the holy temple which, “symbolized in places of worship built out of stone, is praised by the Holy Fathers and, not without reason, is compared in the liturgy to the Holy City, the New Jerusalem.” The distinctive nature of the cathedral is described in the Ceremonial of Bishops, which explains that it is both site and sign: “the site of the bishop’s cathedra or chair, the sign of his teaching office and pastoral power in the particular Church,” and “a sign also of the unity of believers in the faith that the bishop proclaims as shepherd of the Lord’s flock.” Furthermore,

The diocesan cathedral “in the majesty of its building is a symbol of the spiritual temple that is built up in souls and is resplendent with the glory of divine grace. As Saint Paul says: ‘We are the temple of the living God’ (2 Corinthians 6:16). The cathedral, furthermore, should be regarded as the express image of Christ’s visible Church, praying, singing, and worshiping on earth. The cathedral should be regarded as the image of Christ’s Mystical Body, whose members are joined together in an organism of charity that is sustained by the outpouring of God’s gifts” (Paul VI, Apostolic Constitution Mirificus eventus).

These descriptions reveal the polyvalent nature of the church building in general and the cathedral church in particular: a sign of the heavenly Jerusalem, a symbol of the spiritual temple, image of the visible Church, and an image of Christ’s Mystical Body, a sign of the bishop’s teaching office and pastoral power, and a sign of the unity of believers.

The Church’s essential concern is not for a particular style or period, but rather that “all things set apart for use in divine worship should be truly worthy, becoming, and beautiful, signs and symbols of the supernatural world” and so able to turn the human spirit “devoutly toward God.”

“With good reason, then, the cathedral church should be regarded as the center of the liturgical life of the diocese.” It is desirable “to instill esteem and reverence for the cathedral church in the hearts of the faithful” through, for example, the solemn celebration of the anniversary of the dedication and pilgrimages “in which the faithful… visit the cathedral in a spirit of devotion.” For here, in a unique way, heaven and earth are joined and the faithful are encouraged and strengthened in their journey toward their heavenly homeland.

For more information visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.

PARISH CENTER OFFICE SUMMER HOURS

The Parish Center will close at 3:00 pm on Fridays through August 31, 2018; Monday thru Thursday hours are 8:00 am—4:30 pm.

God our Father, We give thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find the courage and perseverance to balance work, family, and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own fathers who have supported and challenged us; may they continue to lead in strong and gentle ways. We remember fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; may they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Adults- What is a small change you can make in your daily living that has the potential to make an impact not only in your life, but in the lives of others around you?

Kids- What big things do you want to do with your life?

SHRINE PILGRIMAGE RECAP! We had a great time on our pilgrimage to the Shrine with some of our Girl Genius group. We prayed for the St. John the Evangelist and St. Pius X parish communities. Stay tuned for updates about when Girl Genius will be starting up again!

SOW CORNER

The Seeds of Wisdom in South Sudan Board would like to thank everyone who made the May 20 potluck dinner such a success. About 125 people attended and their generosity yielded more than $15,000 to help us continue our work with the children of Yei.

The evening included a performance by the St. Josephine Bakhita singers, lots of delicious food (including sambusas made by members of our South Sudanese community) and a multimedia presentation by the Deick family on their recent trip to Uganda.

Steve and Brenda Deick and their children described their experiences visiting refugee camps where families from Yei now reside, as well as the boarding schools where our students are being housed and educated. We currently are sponsoring 50 students in two boarding schools, and our tutoring program in the camps enrolls 148 more children. They continue to inspire us with their determination and courage in the face of difficult circumstances. The good news is that our mission endures, and the children continue to receive the priceless gift of education.

Anyone at the potluck who saw the videos of some of the students could see that these are wonderful children who are extremely grateful for the support the St. John the Evangelist parish has provided.

The Board will continue to seek ways to best fulfill our mission. With the ongoing support of our generous donors, we are confident we can make a difference in the lives of our friends halfway around the world. And, better yet, we look forward to the day when peace comes to South Sudan and we can reopen the school in Yei.

THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN

Every year, as St. John’s welcomes people into the Church, members of our parish walk with them along their journey of faith. As much as the candidates rely on sponsors to help them grow in faith, sponsors come to realize the ways God is calling them and moving in their lives. By the time the Easter Vigil rolls around, sponsors can’t help but talk about their own conversion as well. If you’re interested in growing more aware of the way God moves in your life and want to accompany others in their journey of faith, please contact Philip at the parish office or at [email protected].

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND

Did you know that St. John’s offers a number of ministries to people who are sick or homebound? From delivering a meal to bringing people the Eucharist, parishioners here are eager to care for those who cannot participate in regular Sunday celebrations. If you know of someone who may like to receive a visit from a parishioner or if you would like a visit yourself, please give us a call at (507) 288-7372, drop by the parish office, or e-mail Philip Lomneth at [email protected].

SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM

Call (507) 328-4281 for hours of service or http://www.rochester.k12.mn.us/departments/student_nutrition_services/summer_meals/ Adult Meal Price (Cash only - no change available) Breakfast - $2.25, Lunch - $3.95.

CELEBRATING THE ORDINATIONS

Join Rochester Serrans in welcoming Fr. The Hoang and Fr. Brian Mulligan to the brotherhood of priests for the Diocese of Winona-

Rochester. Ordained on June 8th in an inspiring Ordination ceremony presided by the Most Reverend Bishop John M. Quinn, friends and family gathered to witness, support, and celebrate their call to minister as priests. You may pray for them and future priests with this prayer: "Dear Jesus, we thank you for all the priests and religious who have helped us to live our faith. Please give us the strength to live as faithful Catholics and work with them to promote your Kingdom. We beg you to send us more holy priests and religious to bring Christ's saving message to this and future generations. Bring to us men and women who will dedicate their lives to sharing our great Catholic Faith. We pray there will be priests to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, anoint us near death, administer the Sacraments to our future off-spring, and bring them all to dance with us in heaven." (A Prayer by Serrans Jack and Judy Cozzens on behalf of their son Bishop Andrew Cozzens) To become a member of the Rochester Serra Team that provides prayers and support to religious life, contact Mike Sheehan 507.288.3767 or Berny Saletel 507.259.8498.
