Catherine C. Theron is a graduate of Cornell University studying English, history, and design. She resides in

Central PA. She is a self-taught designer and has concentrated on counted thread techniques and especially

samplers for the past 25 years. Catherine has taught for EGA and ANG chapters, sampler guilds, shops, private

groups, museums, and wholesale trade shows. She was a founding member of the thread company The Gentle

Art.

Deborah Gale Tirico is an avid needle artist and trained graphic designer. She has studied appliqué with a

variety of national teachers and continues to study historical appliqué quilts and coverlets. Her area of

specialization is the creation of a sculptural look to felted wool appliqué by using needle tilting techniques and

the layering and stuffing of wool pieces. Deborah’s designs feature matching and over-dyed wool threads and

embroidery embellishments which enhance and define the clarity of her subject. She has been an active member

of the EGA since 2004 and enjoys teaching chapter meetings, regional, national and international seminars. Her

first book, Gorgeous Wool Appliqué: A visual guide on adding dimension and unique embroidery will be

released in October 2015.

Rachael Watkins was born and raised in England at a time when sewing, dress making and knitting were

taught in school. Her Great Aunt taught her how to do tatting when she was ten years old and she has been

fascinated by all forms of lace since that time.

In 1964 she and her husband immigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles where she worked as a

therapist with handicapped children. She raised three children of her own and now have five lovely

Grandchildren. After retirement, she joined EGA and eagerly took as many classes as possible, including

classes from Vima de Micheli, Sharon Cohen and Linda Driskell. I leaned about pulled thread, drawn thread,

Hardanger, cut work, bobbin lace etc. and began to have a better understanding of the many ways that lace is

made in different parts of the world. I became particularly enthralled with needlepoint lace after visiting Italy

with Vima’s embroidery tour and observing the Lace Makers of Burano.I hope to inspire others to try this

method of lace making, which in Italy it is called” Punto in Aria”, (stitches in the air).

Lynn Wilkinson is a teacher/designer of canvas and counted thread. Original degrees were in English and a

Masters in Special Education, with most of her teaching career in junior high/high school special education.

Needlepoint therapy became her profession when she purchased a needlework store and began teaching

needlepoint. She has spent many years studying with many of needlepoint’s finest instructors. She now shares

her love of needlepoint teaching at ANG seminars, EGA regionals and a myriad of local guild chapters.

Nancy Cucci of Huntington Beach, California earned her B.A. in Physical Education from the University of

California, Santa Barbara and holds Lifetime Standard Secondary and Community College Teaching

Credentials. In 1985 Nancy began teaching classes at local needlepoint shops and presenting programs and

workshops for needlepoint guilds in Southern California. Nancy is a member of EGA, TNNA, NETA, and an

ANG Life Patron. She began teaching on the national level in 2004 and is always happy to have the opportunity

to share her energy and lifelong enthusiasm for stitching with her students.

Barbara Ellis is originally from Chicago and graduated from Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota,

Florida. She has received many awards for her work as a licensed Interior Designer and as a creator of fine

jewelry. Barbara also creates and designs her own beaded jewelry pieces and patterns. She has been published

in Beadwork magazine and several times with her necklace and bracelet designs. She shares her craft by

teaching at Center for the Arts Bonita Springs, Florida, Bead Boutique in Naples, Florida, and various EGA

events and organizations.

Ruthmarie Hofmann is a designer and teacher of needle arts. Her principal focus is in blending a

contemporized form of traditional techniques on canvas and evenweave fabrics, with a fond predilection

towards adding touches of free-form stitchery and beads for extra flavor. I take great delight in encouraging

creative choices in color and design. Design interests lean towards the manipulation of canvas into forms, such

as beads and small amulets, or flat-finishing for wearable art jewelry. Collegiate degrees in Art Education and

Art History augment her sources of inspiration in design as well as providing a solid groundwork for

instructional capabilities.

Deborah Mitek is a needlework designer and teacher specializing in silk ribbon embroidery and surface

stitching on both fabric and canvas. Learning embroidery and knitting at an early age gave her a lifelong

passion for all things needlework. As a member of EGA and ANG for over 30 years, she teaches at the national,

regional and local levels. Her work has been featured in both NeedleArts and Needle Pointers magazines.

Currently, she is the owner of Island Stitchery & Studio, a retail needlework shop. She is also enrolled in the

NAN teacher’s certification program.

Sylvia Murariu was brought up in Romania, where she learned the Point Lace Technique when she was ten

years old. She has over 50 years of experience in stitching and designing. She is a teacher, designer and has

authored three self-published books about Romanian Point Lace, a DVD, a video tape and countless lace

designs, beading designs, and tradition Brazilian embroidery designs. She is a member of the Portland Lace

Society in Portland, Oregon, EGA, ANG, NAN, and BDEIG. She has taught at the national and regional EGA

seminars, Brazilian Embroidery national seminars, IOLI conventions, meetings and workshops.

Deanna Powell has exhibited, lectured and taught needle arts for over thirty-five years. In recent years, beads

have become an integral part of her clothing and jewelry designs. She is an EGA certified teacher, certified

graduate teacher, and past national president of EGA. To share her knowledge Deanna has contributed to

numerous publications.

Paulette Baron has been beading since 1994. Shortly after she began, she started teaching bead weaving

classes in the Washington, D.C. area. In addition to teaching around her home base, Paulette teaches at several

national bead shows, as well as traveling to bead stores around the U.S.

After earning her Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University, Paulette became a graphic designer. But

she found her true calling when she became involved with beads. Her need to be creative and to work with

colors and design had finally found a home. Paulette is known for creating three-dimensional sculptural pieces

of art out of beads. Her pieces utilize different sizes and shapes of beads and are made using a wide assortment

of off-loom bead-weaving stitches.

Margaret Bendig resides in Santa Ana, California. She teaches needlework throughout the country and in

Canada, shops in California and Arizona as well as for EGA Region Seminars and ANG National Seminars.

Although she loves all needlework, her focus is on counted thread techniques and counted canvas designs. Her

designs have been featured as programs and workshops for many EGA and ANG chapters as well as in

Needlepoint Now and Needle Pointers magazines and as EGA and ANG online classes. Margaret began

designing and teaching over 25 years ago. She is an enthusiastic teacher and very willing to share her

knowledge. She is always looking for an opportunity to use a skill or method in a new way. Margaret believes

that we are never finished with our education and should pursue new ideas daily.

Eileen Bennett Artist, author, teacher Eileen is a recognized expert in the art of sampler stitching, much sought

after in the United States and abroad for her encyclopedic knowledge of historic embroideries. She has written

seven books, including her two-volume Note Book of Sampler Stitches, The Red Book of Sampler Stitches and A

Note Book of Pulled Thread Stitches that embroiderers and canvas workers routinely turn to for well-

documented, historically accurate stitches. Her designs are noteworthy for their authenticity and grace. Like

her books, they are much-admired for their comprehensive, easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams. Also, like

her books, her design are popular; she has sold over 500,000 leaflets since opening her company, The Sampler

House, in 1984.

Linda Chirby has been teaching for the EGA, the Callaway School of Needlearts, TNNA, the Bead & Button

Show and other venues since 2000. Her focus is on elegant, romantic, wearable beaded designs. Her bead-

woven workshops feature peyote, herringbone, right-angle and cubic right-angle weave, netting and other bead

stitches. Her highly detailed patterns and step-by-step instructions can be found at chirbydesigns.com.

Classes

How will I know what to bring to class? About a month prior to Seminar, your teacher will send you a

letter telling you what supplies to bring. Always plan on bringing the supplies you use on a regular basis

such as: needles, needle threader, scissors, tweezers, laying tools, magnification, light, extension cord,

multiple-plug power strip, frame weights or clamps, tacks, etc.

How does the class lottery work? All registrations received on or before the closing of registration are

treated equally, giving each Registrant an equal opportunity to get into their first-choice classes. When

choosing classes, it is important that you only list classes you want to take. Listing more classes

increases your opportunities only if you are willing to take those classes.

If there are more Registrants than class space, a lottery is held. Those who “win the lottery” receive their

first class choice. When a class is filled by lottery choices, the class is then closed, and the names of

those who did not get a place in that class are placed on a waiting list or placed in their next highest-

ranked available class. The Registrar maintains waiting lists until the close of registration on June 30,

and if there are cancellations from any class, then the next person on that waiting list is contacted. NO

class changes will be accepted after June 30, 2017.

What if the class does not fill and is cancelled? Classes may be cancelled in the event of insufficient

enrollment, teacher illness, or any other emergency as may be determined by the Seminar 2017

committee. Registrant will be notified and has the option to either cancel the registration or change to

another available class.

What if I must cancel? All cancellations must be made notifying the Registrar in writing. The current

EGA Cancellation Policy will determine the refund amount that will be allowed.

How and when will I be notified of class cancellation? You will be notified by telephone, email or

regular mail within 15 days of registration closing.

Volunteer Positions Volunteers are needed before, during and after seminar. There are many jobs that can use your time and

talents.

o Class Angels

o Registration Desk

o Jan Jellins Exhibit

o Merchandise Night

o Hospitality Office

roll, distributing class kits and supplies. A Class Angel will not miss any teaching instruction nor are

they expected to do heavy lifting.

How do I volunteer to be a Class Angel or to assist in another capacity? Check the box on the

Ann Strite-Kurz

Technique: Mixed Media Canvas

Proficiency Level: Intermediate Advanced

Sand dollars are commonly found on the

beaches in the mid-Atlantic region and along

the Gulf Coast, but they are also indigenous to

Washington State. The usual round shape of

the symmetrical shell is established on the

canvas with a charted outline that is executed

in back stitches after the sinking holes for

these stitches are poked onto the canvas with a

large needle or laying tool. These back

stitches are whipped later to assure smooth

curves and to eliminate the visibility of the

dimpled holes. An open blackwork pattern is

used to suggest the texture of the tiny spines

that would have covered the shell in its living

state. A denser allover pattern fills the five

“petals” in the center of the disk. Design Area:

5 ½” x 5 ½” square

Kit Contents: All materials needed to

complete the design plus detailed instruction booklet with a color copy of the finished model on the cover and

some detail views. Student will be offered a background color choice in Soy Luster.
