Pat a Pan

Traditional French Carol

Patapan, or Guillaume prends ton tambourin, is a traditional song from the Burgundy region in France. It’s also known in English as Willie Take Your Little Drum.

‘Turelurelu’ is the sound the flute makes and ‘patapatapan’ is the sound of the drum. This is most likely the inspiration for the English Christmas song, The Little Drummer Boy.

Guillaume prends ton tambourinToi, prends ta flûte, Robin;Au son de ces instruments

Turelurelu, patapatapanAu son de ces instruments

Je dirai Noël gaîment.

Willie take your little drum, Robin bring your flute and come,

Play a joyous tune today.

Turelurelu, pat-a-pat-a pan

Play a joyous tune todayOn this joyous holiday

Silent Night

The original lyrics for the song in German, Stille Nacht, was written by Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz X. Gruber. The carol was first performed on 24 December 1818 at the St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf, Austria. Since then the Christmas song has achieved world wide appeal and it is said that there are over 300 translations of the song in the world.

Silent Night

Holy Night Silent Night

All is calm.All is bright.

Round yon Virgin,

Mother and

Child

Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace.Sleep in heavenly peace.

Holy Night Silent Night

All is calm.All is bright.

Round yon Virgin,

Mother and Child

Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace.Sleep in heavenly peace.

Deck the Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly

Fa la la la la…. la la la la….

‘Tis the season to be jolly

Fa la la la la…. la la la la….

Don we now our gay apparel,

Fa la la…la la la…la la la

Troll the ancient yuletide carol

Fa la la la la….la la la la

See the blazing Yule before us,

Fa la la la la….la la la la….

Strike the harp and join the chorus,

Fa la la la la….la la la la….

Follow me in merry measure,

Fa la la….la la la…la la la

While I tell of Yuletide treasure,

Fa la la la la….la la.. la..la..

Fast away the old year passes,

Fa la la la la….la la la la….

Hail the new ye lads and lasses,

Fa la la la la….la la..la.. la

Sing we joyous all together,

Fa la la….la la la…la la la.

Heedless of the wind and weather

Fa la la la la….la la…la…la..

Up on the Housetop/Jolly Old St. Nicholas

Up on the housetop the reindeer pause,

Out jumps good old Santa Claus

Down through the chimney with lots of toys,

All for the little ones, Christmas joys.

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go!Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go!

Up on the housetop, click, click, click!

Down through the chimney with good St. Nick.

Jolly old St. Nicholas, lean your ear this way! Don’t

you tell a single soul what I’m going to say:

Christmas eve is coming soon; now you dear old

man, whisper what you’ll bring to me; tell me if you

can

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go!

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go

Up on the housetop, click, click, click!

Down through the chimney with good St. Nick.

Have a holly, jolly Christmas

It’s the best time of the year

I don’t know if there’llbe snow, but have

a cup of cheer

Have a holly jolly Christmas

And when you

walk down the street

Say “Hello” to friends you know

And everyone you meet.

Oh, ho, the mistletoe hung where you can see

Somebody waits

for you,

kiss her once

for me.

And in case you didn’t hear

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas this year!
