}LIHEAP Emergency AssistanceOffered by Gateway

Gateway Community ActionPartnership’s Low Income Home EnergyAssistance Program (LIHEAP or HEA) isdesigned to help low-income families andindividuals meet home heating and med-ically necessary cooling costs.Applications are accepted through April30, 2015. LIHEAP is administered by theNJ Department of Community Affairs.

To be eligible for LIHEAP benefits, theapplicant household must be responsiblefor home heating or cooling costs, eitherdirectly or included in the rent; and havegross income at or below 200% of the fed-eral poverty level. Call for a chart that givesspecific monthly gross income maximumsfor FFY 2015. Persons who live in publichousing and/or receive rental assistanceare not eligible unless they pay for theirown heating/cooling costs directly to thefuel supplier. The amount of the LIHEAPheating benefit is determined by income, household size, fuel type, and heatingregion. This year, the medically necessarycooling assistance benefit is set at $200.

An eligible household that heats withnatural gas or electricity may have its ben-efits directly forwarded to its utility com-pany. Otherwise, in most cases eligiblehouseholds directly responsible to a fuelsupplier for payment of home heatingcosts receive a two-party check in thename of the applicant and the fuel suppli-er. Households whose heating costs areincluded in their rent receive a singleparty check made out to the eligible appli-cant. A household receiving medicallynecessary cooling benefits also receives asingle party check.

Renters who live in public subsidizedhousing with heating costs included in therent are not eligible to receive HEA or anyemergency assistance. The maximumamount of Emergency Assistance for natu-ral gas, electric, oil, propane and otherdeliverable fuels is a one-time assistanceof up to $450. proper Yuletide spirit. One such recording,Nat King Cole’s venerated rendition of “TheChristmas Song” never fails to conjure theimages and emotions associated with thistime of year. And this season, Vinelandersmay have a special affinity with this singerbased on a recent revelation.Cole’s rise to fame began with the for-

mation of his jazz trio, originally called theKing Cole Swingers, in the late 1930s. Overthe following decade, this group appearedon numerous radio shows. When Colebegan to display his vocal ability on varioustunes in the band’s mostly instrumentalsets, a legend was born. He enjoyed his firsthit in 1943 with an original composition,“Straighten Up and Fly Right,” and sealedhis status as a popular performer with thefirst of his four renditions of “TheChristmas Song” in 1946. All the while hecontinued to tour with his trio.According to Vineland resident and jazz

musicianWayne Quairoli, who earlier thisyear solved the mystery of where saxo-phonist John Coltrane performed inVineland in 1954, there was a story he wastold about Cole decades ago by Vinelandmusician Carmen Galzerano.“Carmen is walking home from school

one day and he hears that Nat King Cole isin town and that they’re playing in this littlebar that, at the time, was literally adjacentto the high school,” Quairoli said. “This waswhen Vineland High School was on LandisAvenue. It’s now Landis Junior High School.“This little tavern that was there, it was

like a little house. It was called Gross’sTavern. Carmen heard that Nat King Colewas in Vineland and that’s where he wassupposed to be playing that night. So, onhis way home from school, he walks intoGross’s Tavern and sticks his head in thedoor and there he is. The trio was in thererehearsing for the gig.”Quairoli points out that the exact year

Cole appeared in Vineland remains hazy, but the timeframe can be determined. “It

had to be between ’50 and ’53 when he sawNat King Cole rehearsing in there,” he said, adding that they were the years Galzeranoattended Vineland High School. It seems likely that the appearance

occurred early in Galzerano’s high schoolyears. According to Daniel Mark Epstein’sbiography of the singer,Nat King Cole, thetrio’s tours on the East Coast, all of whichincluded a stop in Philadelphia, took placeregularly in the late 1940s and at the startof the 1950s. And sources indicate thatCole’s growing popularity led to the dis-banding of the trio by 1953.Although the date of this historic occa-

sion can’t be determined, the history of thebuilding that housed Gross’s Tavern isknown. “It was this funky little house,”Quairoli recalled. “It looks like it could havebeen a one or two-bedroom house. It wassuch a tiny, little place, and they actually tookthe whole building up andmoved it to a newlocation. They took the whole building andtook it down toMill Road and they built afoundation for it down off of Landis andMill and it actually reopened as a bar there. It lasted like another 20 years at Mill Roadand Landis Avenue and then eventually, Iguess, it just fell apart, so now the lot’s empty. But the lot is still there. I can show you thelot where it used to be. It’s about 50 yardsoff of the intersection of Mill and Landis.”Quairoli isn’t certain if Galzerano

attended any of the performances by NatKing Cole’s trio in Vineland. His age at thetime would most likely have prevented it.Still, he had the opportunity to witness theband rehearsing, and he preserved the factthat Nat King Cole played in Vineland sev-eral years ahead of John Coltrane. AndQuairoli still has fond memories of themoment this information was shared withhim. “I can still remember when Carmentold me,” he said. “I was like, ‘Are you kid-ding me, man? Nat King Cole played atGross’s Tavern?’ ”I

Saving Lives-Building Homes: The Habitat SuperheroesThe exhibition Saving Lives-Building Homes: The Habitat Superheroes is sched-

uled to be on display at Vineland Public Library, 1058 E. Landis Avenue, January5–31, 2015. This display is a celebration of all the imaginative superhero drawingsand designs that Habitat for Humanity received from the youth within CumberlandCounty. Habitat for Humanity helps families in need every four minutes, thanks tostrong and devoted heroes; this exhibition is in celebration of them.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit Christian-based ministry dedicated to the eradi-cation of low-income housing both nationally and globally. While the organization hashad the opportunity to work with waves of volunteers from all southern New Jerseyregions and of varying ages, often times the children of Cumberland County, due to lia-bility conflicts, feel that they cannot contribute to Habitat’s work within the community.

The search for Habitat’s superhero was a contest crafted for this specific demo-graphic—children under the age of 14, as a community building activity. The Habitatsuperhero had to embody the ideals of Habitat for Humanity- a vigilante with sharppower tools and apathy for the lack of housing within his or her community.

Out of many submissions from Anthony Rossi Intermediate School, The Boys andGirls Club of Vineland, the Vineland Public Library, and the Girl Scout Troop #52447,Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity selected two superheroes to be their mas-cot on future ads and paraphernalia. All students who submitted a cartoon or draw-ing were inducted into Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity’s young heroleague for saving their community by showing creative power in their design andvolunteering their time and efforts to bringing awareness to a global housing short-age in need of a hero—their hero.

The two winning designs were: Mr. Handiman by Francis Virtucio from RossiIntermediate School and Captain Constructor by Dominick Forgen from Bishop ShadRegional School.
