Be thoughtful, be silent, and be reverent, for this is the House of God. Before the service, speak to the Lord;

during the service, let the Lord speak to you; after the service, speak to one another.

M I N I S T R Y O F T H E W O R D

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Your Love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created and You shall renew the face of the earth. O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in Your consolations, through Christ our Lord, Amen. PROCESSIONAL HYMN …………………………………………………. “Christ Returneth”

It may be at morn, when the day is awaking, When sunlight through darkness and shadow is breaking That Jesus will come in the fullness of glory To receive from the world “His own.”

O Lord Jesus, how long, how long Ere we shout the glad song, Christ returneth! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Amen. Hallelujah! Amen.

It may be at midday, it may be at twilight, It may be, perchance, that the blackness of midnight Will burst into light in the blaze of His glory, When Jesus receives “His own.” While its hosts cry Hosanna, from heaven descending, With glorified saints and the angels attending, With grace on His brow, like a halo of glory, Will Jesus receive “His own.” Oh, joy! oh, delight! should we go without dying, No sickness, no sadness, no dread and no crying. Caught up through the clouds with our Lord into glory, When Jesus receives “His own.”

LITURGY OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Leader: Blessed are You, Sovereign Lord, just and true; to You be praise and glory for ever! Your prophet John the Baptist was witness to the truth as a burning and shining light. May we Your servants rejoice in His Light, and so be led to witness to Him, Who is the Lord of our coming Kingdom, Jesus our Saviour and King of kings. Blessed be God for ever. Leader: God our Father, You gave to Zechariah and Elizabeth in their old age a son called John. He grew up strong in spirit,

prepared the people for the coming of the Lord, and baptized them in the Jordan to wash away their sins. Help us, who have been baptized in Christ, to be ready to welcome Him into our hearts, and to grow strong in faith by the power of the Spirit. We ask this through Jesus Christ, the Light who is coming into the world. BLESSING AND LIGHTING OF CANDLE

ALL: Lord Jesus, Light of the world, John told the people to prepare, for You were very near. As Christmas grows closer day by day, help us to be ready to welcome You now. LITANY OF THE FOUR LAST THINGS God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, three in one. Hear us from Thy heavenly throne, Spare us, Holy Trinity. Jesu, Life of those who die, Advocate with God on high, Hope of immortality Hear us, Holy Jesu. Thy Whose Death to mortals gave Power to triumph o'er the grave Living now from death to save, Hear us, Holy Jesu.

Thou before Whose great white Throne All our doings must be show, Pleading now for us, Thine own Hear us, Holy Jesu. Thou Who Death was borne that we, From the power of Satan free, Might not die eternally Hear us, Holy Jesu. Thou Who dost a place prepare, That in heavenly mansions fair, Sinners may Thy glory share, Hear us, Holy Jesu.

HELL

From the awful place of doom Where in rayless outer gloom dead souls lie as in a tomb, Save us, Holy Jesu. From the black, the dull despair Ruin'd men and angels share, From the dread companions there, Save us Holy Jesu.

From the unknown agonies, Of the soul that helpless lies, From the worm that never dies, Save us, Holy Jesu. From the lusts that none can tame, from the fierce mysterious flame, From the everlasting shame, Save us, Holy Jesu.

St. Gregory’s Acolyte Of The Year

Benjamin Sweeting

Benjamin was honoured as St. Gregory’s Acolyte of the Year for his exuberance and dedication to serving around God’s holy altar. He continues to uphold our high standards and always ministers with joy and determination. He is most mannerly, obedient, and displays leadership qualities. We are so very proud of him and extend our congratulations. Benjamin follows in the footsteps of his brother Walton, last year’s AOTY. Benjamin is the son of Charlene Sweeting. Arthur and Vellora Sweeting are his grandparents.

Congratulations! Keep up the great work! GPA AWARD WINNERS

weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. 20 No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. 21 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of My people be, and My chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. 23 They shall not labour in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord— and their descendants as well. 24 Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. 25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent— its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all My holy mountain, says the Lord.

12 But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labour among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; 13 esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. 15 See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise the words of prophets, 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22

abstain from every form of evil.

23 May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The One Who calls you is faithful, and He will do this.

25 Beloved, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 27 I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all of them.

+ THE GOSPEL + Reader: The Lord be with you. Response: And also with you. Reader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 1:6-8, 19-28. Response: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the Light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify to the Light…

19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord,”” as the prophet Isaiah said.

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands One Whom you do not know, 27 the One Who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of His sandal.” 28

This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

1. A TIME TO PLAN

There are only a few weeks left in 2011. It’s time for the family of Saint Gregory to focus on plans and programmes for 2012. We must have harmony in all efforts so that we’ll have no clashing and better plan for events.

Now it is the opportunity to evaluate programmes of this passing year, scrap and enhance as we project to the future.

2012 we must put emphasis on youth and children and make whatever we do be friendly to these two groups.

Ours must be one of complimentary planning and execution over and against the competitive element that so regularly exposes its unacceptable face.

Let us use the month of October for serious planning and have those plans into the office by mid November.

There is a mighty question we ask when nations rage: Just when will be Christ’s coming, the ending of the age? Take care, said Jesus clearly, for many will appear; They’ll claim to be Messiah, yet people should not fear. For in the days of Noah, the people went along In eating and in drinking, in merriment and song— Then suddenly the world changed with great, surprising power; So too will be Christ’s coming, and no one knows the hour. So keep awake and watchful; salvation is at hand! Our hope is in Christ Jesus, and by God’s grace we stand. The night is almost over, we wait for God’s new day, And through the Holy Spirit, we follow Jesus’ way. Be ready in your living, for when you feed the poor, Or give to thirsty children the water they long for, And when you welcome strangers and help the ones in need, Christ says: “Receive my kingdom, for you are serving me.”

PRAYER AFTER MASS (SERVERS PRAYER):

Glory to You Lord Jesus, glory to You. Grant that as I have served in Your presence, may we also come to serve in Your heavenly kingdom. In all things God be glorified. Amen.

Priest: The Mass is ended. Go in peace rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

People: Thanks be to God. Amen!!!

THE ADVENT WREATH

1. The Advent Wreath has four red, purple or blue candles in a ring around a white or gold candle. Sometimes it has three of the colours mentioned and one rose and one white. The first candle is lit on Advent Sunday; additional ones are lit, one on each Sunday, and the white or gold one on Christmas Day.

2. The new candle each week may appropriately be lit after the Introit Hymn.

3. All five candles may appropriately be alight during services through the Christmas season.

4. There are several traditions about the meaning or theme of each candle. The scheme that accords best with the Lectionary is:

Advent 1 - The Patriarchs, Advent 2 - The Prophets, Advent 3 - John the Baptist, Advent 4 - The Virgin Mary, Christmas - The Christ

5. Each of the four Sundays then reminds us of those who prepared for the coming of Christ. “The Patriarchs” can naturally focus on Abraham, our father in faith, and David, Jesus’ ancestor in whose city He was born. “The Prophets” give an opportunity to reflect on the way the birth of the Messiah was “foretold”. John, who proclaimed the Saviour, and Mary, who bore Him in her womb, completes the picture.

6. The prayers below reflect these four themes. The second and third prayers in each case are written with children in mind, and the third is to be said by the congregation together. Only one prayer need be used on any occasion, though the second and third fit well together in each case.

Change Self-Sabotaging Behavior l

A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes

blindly on and suffers the consequences.

- Proverbs 27:12

Are you your own worst enemy—your biggest stressor? Do you engage in behavior that often leads to a stress-producing incident? Listed below are several behaviors or situations that you would do well to consider eliminating from your daily routine:

• Some women carry large purses that contain everything that they will need from sunrise to sunset. Trying to locate an item in it, particularly in a rush-can be quite stressful. To break the “everything but the kitchen sink” habit, note how often you actually use each item in your purse each day. lf the answer is never, then it may be a good candidate for leaving at home. Try carrying only the basics, such as your wallet, lipstick, and keys.

• Do you find yourself driving down the freeway and fumbling for your cell phone when you get a call? Why not just make a habit of putting the phone in an easily accessible spot the minute you get in the car?

• Do you shop with your purse open as if to say to a would-be purse snatcher, “Welcome. Come on in"? Further, an open purse allows items to fall out of it. I live in a hilly area, and I’m always spilling the contents of my purse when l go down the hills. This is frustrating, but whom can I blame for self-sabotage?

• How peaceful are your travel preparations? Because I travel a lot, I keep duplicate items of toiletries packed in my suitcase, and therefore have no need to run around looking for them at the last minute. In the past, I have forgotten almost every item at one time or another that I considered “essential.” Now, I have a pre-printed packing checklist that sets forth everything I will need. I print out a copy for each trip. The list is categorized by business, personal grooming, exercise gear, books/products, and so forth. It has made getting out of the house for my trips a lot less stressful.

• How many times have you lost your car in a parking lot or structure? Wherever I park now the first thing I note is my parking

location. I recite it several times as I leave the car. I once was only minutes away from reporting my car stolen after having looked for it for what seemed like hours. I finally located it on a floor of the parking structure where most of the cars had left. No more of this stressful madness for me.

• If you’ve entered that forgetful period in your life, when you go out, look around you when you get up to be sure you’ve collected all your belongings. Constantly losing your items can cause quite a bit of stress for you and your companions.

• At home, always have a designated place for the things you need to use often. l keep a bowl or a basket by the door for keys, a vitamin carousel that stays in a set place, a closet organized in a manner such that the things l can wear currently are positioned in the front to avoid my going through the entire closet each time l have to get dressed.

• Do not take the cordless phone from the room where the base is located. It may be worth your sanity to have a phone in each room.

• If you wear reading glasses but can’t keep up with them, buy several pairs and designate each one for a particular location. Be diligent to keep them in their appointed places.

• Do you realistically plan for traffic or things not going as scheduled? Are your assumptions too optimistic as to how long it will take to complete a task or drive to an appointment? The truth of the matter is that I could indeed do things within the bounds of my optimistic time frame if l were the only person on the planet. However, things happen. Rather than bemoaning certain realities, you simply need to anticipate them.

Try to reduce most of your daily activities to a routine. Good planning and forethought are critical to minimizing self-caused stress. They will not reduce you to a life of boredom but rather will give you more time to plan something exciting and fulfilling.

TODAY’S SENTENCE PRAYER: Father, please help me to anticipate and make provisions for situations that could be stress producing.
