Your gift to Barrow Neurological
Institute at Phoenix Children’s
Hospital makes a difference for
patients like Mia and Anthony.
Pulling through after a traumatic brain injury Anthony and a friend were having a friendly pull-up contest
on a tree branch when the 500 pound branch suddenly
gave way, landing on Anthony’s head. Rushed to Phoenix
Children’s, the 14-year-old underwent emergency brain
surgery due to a large blood clot. After weeks in the
intensive care unit and months of rehabilitation, Anthony
still fights severe headaches but feels like his old self
again and looks forward to rejoining his classmates in
school next fall.
A tiny warrior battles brain cancer A severe headache led to a devastating discovery for
7-year-old Mia: a brain tumor. When the tumor erupted,
Mia underwent emergency surgery and spent 30 days in
intensive care. Through extensive rehabilitation, she had
to relearn to walk, talk and eat. Mia has completed 31
radiation treatments and continues chemotherapy
through August. While treatment has been difficult on the
entire family, Mia has made the best of it by letting her
fun-loving personality shine through.
