Accountable

“ Many of the skills needed to survive and thrive in the new economy are exactly those a well-rounded liberal arts education has always provided: depth, breadth, knowledge in context and motion, and the search for deeper understanding.”

–Social Historian Richard A. Greenwald, Inside Higher Ed, Oct. 1, 2010

THAT’S PRECISELY THE POINT.

From day one, we encourage you to consider the connections between what you’re doing here and what you’ll do with the rest of your life. We will help you each step of the way. Our professors are committed to making sure you understand why you’re learning something (and that you learn it well). Courses are adapted to the needs of a changing world—so you can be, too. Gain practical, hands-on experiences, and real connections with professionals in your field. Explore your passions, become more independent, and align your personal values with your professional ambitions. And our approach works. Stevenson graduates are highly sought by employers.

We’ll stake our reputation on your success.

WE KNOW—YOU HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED AT STEVENSON and we’re talking about what you’re going to do after you earn your degree.

count on us.You can

Purposeful

Learning and service work together: More than 300 students from Stevenson’s freshman seminar courses helped build an artificial reef as part of Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts.

FACULTY? You’ll learn from those who are active in their fields and dedicated to teaching, and there is one for every 16 students—so you can enjoy their connections to meaningful project and internship opportunities. ACADEMICS? A solid liberal arts education is united with constantly updated, career-focused courses—so you can unite the power of reasoning and perspective with relevant, specialized skills. RESOURCES? We use the latest technologies, from our mock trial courtroom, theatres, and libraries to our science labs and computer labs—so you will be an expert user of these tools even before you step out into the real world, and employers will thank you for it.

IT’S NO ACCIDENT THAT STEVENSON GRADUATES ENJOY SUCH SUCCESS. Everything we do is purposefully focused on student needs and designed to achieve results.

VICTORIA WOLFE ’11 is now a Development Associate for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. She played field hockey and was the vice president of Lambda Pi Eta at Stevenson. Victoria credits her experience in the business communication program at SU for preparing her for the future: “My professors challenged me to take my work to the next level and helped me to become confident in my finished products. I will carry that with me throughout my career.”

WHILE AT STEVENSON, MATT CONDUCTED MOLECULAR GENETICS RESEARCH FOR THREE-AND-A-HALF YEARS. He successfully competed against students throughout the country to obtain undergraduate research fellowships at Miami University and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Matt says, “Conducting research at Stevenson opened the doors to these national internships and has enabled my success as a young investigator.” Matt also founded the campus Wilderness and Ecology Club and was a member of three honor societies.

After working for two years as a Research Techni-cian for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Fort Detrick, Md., Matt is now pursuing a doctoral degree from the Univer-sity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

“ The breadth of information that Stevenson provides students is vital for a complete understanding of science as a whole. But most valuable was the accessibility of the dedicated professors.”

MATTHEW BRAMBLE ’10, BIOLOGYPh.D. student at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

Entrepreneurial

It’s not unusual for a Stevenson student’s internship to lead to a job offer. Just ask English language and literature major Rachel Martinez ’11, who completed an internship with Maryland Public Television and now works as an editor for the organization.

NOT WHAT YOU TYPICALLY READ IN A COLLEGE BROCHURE? GOOD!

Our innovative entrepreneurial spirit reflects the mindset you’ll need for success in today’s world. We’re constantly seeking new opportunities and networks of support for our students, from new courses, degree programs, and enhanced research to online, accelerated, and graduate offerings. And it’s easy to individualize your experience at Stevenson with an average class size of 17 and an extensive faculty mentoring program (even the president of the University mentors students!).

EDUCATION AT STEVENSON IS RESPONSIVE, ADAPTABLE, AND DRIVEN BY EMPLOYER NEEDS.

STEVENSON’S ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM BRINGS INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN DESIGNERS TO CAMPUS TO WORK WITH STUDENTS.

SHERVONNE PLAYED NCAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL for Stevenson and worked in the campus library an average of 20 hours each week while taking a full course load in the visual communication design program. “Learning to multitask definitely prepared me for the daily juggle required by my job as a creative director,” she says. An internship with a government contractor in Linthicum, Md., led to Shervonne’s first full-time position as a graphic designer. She credits her success there to Stevenson: “Because of Stevenson’s real-world approach, I did not have major culture shock when I graduated; I felt comfortable working with professionals, managers, and clients. I remember feeling so accomplished with my first successful salary negotiation at 22 years old.”

Page 11: Stevenson University Viewbook

“ As creative director and social media mentor, I’m networking and creating new business. To be successful, it takes innovation and the self-confidence to advocate your ideas and knowledge.

“ Being respected as a student and knowing a school does not want to see you fail is the foundation to any dream.”

SHERVONNE CHERRY ’05, VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGNCreative and Social Strategy Lead, Mindgrub Technologies, Baltimore, Md.

BEING PREPARED TO ACHIEVE YOUR CAREER AND LIFE GOALS TAKES MORE THAN GETTING GOOD GRADES.

BRITTANY BEGAN WORKING AT GBMC WHILE A STUDENT AT STEVENSON. She was also a cheerleader and president of the National Student Nurses Association. Brittany notes, “Stevenson’s nursing program is unique because of the variety of clinical settings. I learned so much about different cultures and about myself. These opportunities have made me a better nurse.”

Page 15: Stevenson University Viewbook

“ When you hear the word ‘university,’ the image of a big school with huge lecture classes comes to mind. But this is so different from Stevenson. My professors were not just teachers, they were friends. My classmates weren’t merely other students, they were family. It is the best atmosphere for learning.”

Values

At SU, preparing for a career includes exploring new interests. Business administration major Mike Furia ’14, credits his economics professor with turning a challenging subject into a new passion. With a minor in economics, Mike looks forward to his first job search with optimism: “Because of Stevenson’s career focus, I’m confident I’ll go straight into a field that interests me.”

Page 17: Stevenson University Viewbook

THAT ALSO APPLIES TO STEVENSON STUDENTS, WHO ARE FOCUSED AND DRIVEN YET AT THE SAME TIME FUN-LOVING AND DEEPLY CARING.

And our professors find it just as important to cheer on their students at home games as to collaborate with them on research projects. At Stevenson, you’ll be part of a community that values continual learning, hard work, a sense of responsibility to oneself and others, friendship, and opportunities to enjoy life together. Living and learning at Stevenson reflect a deep tradition of supporting each other in the journey to both a fulfilling career and a fulfilling life in community.

RACHAEL NOTES THAT STEVENSON’S ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PROGRAM WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND HER EXPECTATIONS. “Every class is designed to give you the tools you’ll need in the real world. Every project is created to give you authentic experiences that teachers face every day. Unlike some universities, Stevenson puts you directly in the school system starting in your freshman or sophomore year. As a senior, I felt completely confident in any classroom.”

Page 19: Stevenson University Viewbook

“ My professors were actively involved in the school systems. As a result, Stevenson students are always on the cutting edge of educational developments and comfortable using the latest technologies.” Rachael also toured Europe with fellow students and two of her favorite professors while a student at SU. “I was able to achieve a lifelong dream while receiving college credit.”

Midnight Madness and the homecoming bonfire, basketball and volleyball pick-up games, concerts and visiting speakers. Baltimore’s entertainment culture, and pro sports just minutes away. Plus, great food and some of the best residence halls around, all built within the past 10 years and designed for comfort. From spacious freshman suites with private bathrooms to upper-class apartments with single rooms, residences are fully furnished with carpeted rooms and washing machines that text you when your laundry is ready (really!).

And if you need something more, let us know. You may be surprised at how quickly we respond. A few of the latest additions: our marching band, varsity football and women’s ice hockey. A lineup of 23 varsity sports energize life on campus and offer exceptional opportunities for our NCAA Division III athletes.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE A FORMER PRO FOOTBALL TRAINING CENTER EVEN BETTER? ADD A NEW, 60,000-SQUARE-FOOT GYM AND AN IMPRESSIVE 3,500 SEAT STADIUM, LIKE STEVENSON DID.

The Mustangs won the 2013 DIII Men’s Lacrosse Championship, bringing Stevenson its first national title in school history.

AS A BS TO MS STUDENT, DWIGHT WILL EARN BOTH A BACHELOR’S AND A MASTER’S DEGREE IN JUST FIVE YEARS, and he stays busy as a Resident Assistant and tutor as well as a member of both the Black Student Union and Phi Beta Lambda. With so much going on, Dwight says that he appreciates the small community feel, both inside and outside of the classroom, to give him the support that he needs for success.

Page 23: Stevenson University Viewbook

“ It is reassuring to know that professors are going to know you by name and have the time to take interest in you as a student because the classes are so small.

“ I’m very involved on campus. Some people may say that I ‘work’ too much because I am so involved, but I disagree. I’m thankful for the opportunities at Stevenson and see no reason to put a limit on what I enjoy.”

“ I love getting involved on campus and Stevenson makes that so easy with so many clubs and the activities that are always going on. I am a cheerleader and this year I even had the opportunity to sing the National Anthem before the football season home-opener in Mustang Stadium. Even just walking to class from the residence halls on a normal weekday, you will find that Stevenson is such a friendly place.”

CAMPUS RESOURCESStevenson’s founding campus, the Greenspring campus, is in the scenic Greenspring Valley. Although surrounded by horse farms and estate homes, the 60-acre, wooded campus is just 12 miles from downtown Baltimore. Home to the University’s state-of-the-art science laboratories, video and art studios, art gallery, and 350-seat theatre, the Greenspring campus is the academic hub of the University community.

Located just six miles from the Greenspring campus, the Owings Mills campus is a center for student activity. It includes 13 residential buildings
